Bibliotheca Alexandrina was inaugurated in 2002 as a tribute to the ancient Library of Alexandria and has quickly become a highlight of the city. Join the tour to El Alamein, where a decisive battle during World War II took place. Antalya, Turkey Antalya is the Turkish capital of international tourism. The city includes sites with traces of Lycian, Pamphylian and Hellenistic, but mainly Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman architecture and cultures. From this port you may visit Perge, whose fantastic ruins date back to around 1000 BC and Aspendos, a major port city in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. To date, only parts of Aspendos have been excavated, however its Roman theatre is the best-preserved of any on the Mediterranean coast. Beirut, Lebanon Once known as the Paris of the Middle East, Beirut is now a vibrant city that retains a certain charm due mainly to the warmth and hospitality of its citizens. Archaeological excavation sites have unearthed finds from the Ottoman, Byzantine, Roman, Persian and Phoenician periods. They include the Roman baths and columns, Phoenician wall and the famous law school. The National Museum of Beirut is the witness of time and glory displaying a heritage of 7.000 years. Cairo, Egypt Cairo, capital of Egypt and Africa s most populous city, can be visited should you choose to join the proposed day tour. The Nile, the longest and, perhaps, the most famous river in the world, runs through the city and has been its lifeline since it was founded in the first millennium AD. The excursion will take you to the Pyramids of Giza, the Mighty Sphinx, the Alabaster mosque of Mohamed Ali and the Archaeological museum, among others, in this enchanting city. Kourion is one of the most famous ancient attractions, renowned for its importance, as historical sources suggest it was a major ancient city of the Kingdom of Cyprus. Paphos town is a Unesco World Heritage site that in Hellenistic and Roman times was the capital of Cyprus. Mersin, Turkey Mersin is a large city spreading out along the coast, with an opera house, expensive real estate near the sea or up in the hills, and many other modern urban amenities. Because Mersin has been a crossroad for centuries the local culture is a medley of civilizations, it is a good base for visiting the nearby historical sites and beaches. Corycos is famous for two castles which were once connected by a sea wall, now submerged. Visit ancient Corycos with its monastic church, tombs, Roman cathedral and sarcophagi; and ancient Canytelis, a city with wonderful Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine relics scattered about and telling the stories of three great civilizations sharing different epochs in a common land. Port Said, Egypt Port Said is the fourth largest town in Egypt and is the country s second most important port after Alexandria. Arion will only make a short stop here, in order to disembark those passengers wishing to join the full day tour to Cairo. Tartous, Syria Tartous is an old crusader port and the second largest port city on the Syrian coast. From Tartous you will discover many historical cities and sites, such as Krak des Chevaliers, the greatest of all Crusader castles and one of the greatest sights of Syria, described by T E Lawrence as perhaps the best preserved and most wholly admirable castle in the world ; Damascus is the capital and largest city of Syria, widely known as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, Damascus is a major cultural and religious centre of the Levant; and Palmyra, the city of queen Zenobia, is the dream that came true in the middle of the desert - an entire antic city with its colonnades and its temples surrounded by sand.
