MARKET REPORT WEEK 40 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 4 TH OCTOBER 2013. The BDI shows only a +1.8% gain for last week but any implication that the freight market was therefore quiet is misleading. The Capes were a focal point again since the BCI lost heavily for the first 3 days of the week and then rallied for the last 2 ending the week a fraction (-0.7%) below its close of the week before. The Capesize surge since the 2nd week of September has been brought about primarily by the Chinese restocking on shore iron ore reserves during which time the Baltic has reported about 110 capesize spot fixtures. Since last week was primarily a holiday in China we will only be able to judge at the end of this week whether the welcome Cape blip is over or not. The upsurge in Cape rates together with more (panamax suitable) cargo becoming available in the East has had a positive effect on the BPI too, gaining a further 6% last week whilst the BSI, up +4% and BHSI, up +2.5% also continued to slightly prosper. With there being plenty of corporate investment cash being pumped into shipping these days in the hope of buying in at the bottom of this shipping cycle, the recent rally in cape and panamax rates is now having a positive effect on these vessels values as we are seeing noticeable improvements in S+P levels asked and achieved. Although tanker freight rates have not seen any such improvements lately there remains reasonable enquiry and sales activity in both the crude and products categories with values just edging upwards. The demolition sector remains tough to call at the moment. Whilst on the one hand India and Bangladesh both appear to have stabilised their local currency and steel price issues, Pakistan, the usual buyer for the largest tankers and container vessels, remains seemingly a few weeks behind its sub-continent neighbors on the road to its own domestic Rupee's recovery against the dollar. Moreover, with India and Bangladesh only just back in any position to even buy ships for demolition we are seeing sales reported to these markets region $450 for tankers and $425 for bulkers when we believe the end buyers are only really willing to pay low $400's and high $300's respectively, which means the reported sales have to be by cash buyers speculating on an imminent increase in levels from the end buyers - lets hope they are right. China meantime was basically on holiday last week and reported no purchases. If China still has available berths we anticipate buyers there would currently pay region $350-365. 1
