WOODWARD (Woodward County) Originally home to Kiowa, Cheyenne, Comanche and Arapahoe tribes, the town of Woodward was established in 887 when the railroad arrived. The railroad made Woodward a stop on the Great Western Cattle Trail. Woodward grew as the depot shipped thousands of cattle east and soon got a reputation as a rough-and-tumble frontier town. Located in the western quadrant of the Cherokee Outlet, the town began 6 years before the outlet was officially opened to non-indian settlers as a provisioning point for Fort Supply. Woodward s story forever changed the night of April 9, 947 when a tornado ripped across the city. History would now be measured as having happened before or after the tornado. In November 956, Woodward began a new adventure - oil and gas production; McCormick # became the country s discovery gas well, and a boom of more than twenty years followed. Now the gateway to NW Oklahoma, Woodward showcases the enduring spirit of the original pioneers with genuine hometown hospitality and Wild West history. One of the original seven State Parks built in the 90 s, Boiling Springs State Park is a natural oasis on the plains. The park is named after the natural boiling spring that still flows and keeps the lake full and the surrounding land fertile through even the driest of summers. The Boiling Springs Golf Course, one of the finest municipal golf courses in the country, provides players one of the most challenging playing experiences in the region. During the Great Depression, local Works Progress Administration projects 4 209 RedCarpetCountry.com BEAVER.HLF.BIG.PG.209.indd 4-5 included the damming of an artesian well (a failed oil well venture), which formed Crystal Beach Lake and the adjacent park. ALVA (Woods County) Alva was established in 89 as a land office from the Cherokee Outlet Land Run, the largest of the land rushes that settled western and central Oklahoma. The site was likely named for a railroad attorney, Alva Adams, who had become governor of Colorado. Today, the city council is actively soliciting murals -- one of the most recent is of the storied Castle on the Hill. Marvelous murals can be found throughout the town square. The Runnymede has an interesting history and provides a community room with a full kitchen. The Alva Community Theatre, Inc. (ACT ) offers live entertainment in June and November. G WHERE the trees outnumber the tees. KINGFISHER (Kingfisher County) Kingfisher s Chisholm Trail Museum is one of the best! Named after the famous trader Jesse Chisholm, it is the only museum built directly on the Trail. TONKAWA (Kay County) PONCA CITY (Kay County) Native Americans, hardy pioneers, educators, oilmen, German prisoners of war and creative citizens have all left their mark on this city on the Salt Fork River. Tonkawa (the word translates as they all stay together ) takes its name from the Tonkawa Tribe. Because of abundant wheat production in the area, Tonkawa styles itself the Wheatheart of Oklahoma. The picturesque Heart in the Park Labyrinth with its timeline of Tonkawa history and the Grand Heart Walk of art panels surrounded by personalized pavers are the latest additions to Centennial Park. A number of historical monuments and three museums - the McCarter Museum of Tonkawa History, the Tonkawa Tribal Museum and the A.D. Surrounded by five casinos, Blackwell also plays host to a thriving event center for circuses, drone races and rodeos. This charming town is also home to the largest county fair in the state, taking place the first full week in September of every year. With an economy that has been based in agriculture and the oil and gas industry, during the 90s through the 960s, Blackwell ranked only behind Oklahoma City and Tulsa in Oklahoma for the amount of jobs in its industrial and manufacturing sectors. Companies that have operated in Blackwell include Blackwell Zinc Smelter, Blackwell Milling and Elevator Co., Blackwell Ice Company, Consolidated Gas Co., and Hazel-Atlas Gas. Blackwell has become home to textile research, development and manufacturing, investment casting, high tech manufacturing, and oil and gas service and distribution firms. While in town, stop in and visit the Top of the Oklahoma Museum, enjoy a home-cooked meal at any of the local spots, take a dip in the community pool and say hi to the locals! The town is named for Andrew J. Blackwell, who was the dominant force in its founding. Ponca City thrives on the depth of its rich history, diversity of its attractions, its elegant architecture and the unique nature of the pioneers who made Ponca City their home. In 94 oil baron E.W. Marland began construction on his first home for his wife and adopted family. This now restored 22-room mansion was designed with ground breaking amenities, including the first indoor swimming pool in Oklahoma. Current displays showcase Marland s family and his oil empire of the 920 s, the 0 Ranch Museum and a large collection of Native American artifacts from area tribes. Modeled after the Davanzati Palace in Florence, Italy, the E.W. Marland Estate, a 55-room 4,000 sq. ft. castle on the prairie, contains a leather-lined elevator, 2 bathrooms, kitchens, 7 fireplaces and an elegant ballroom with a 24-karat gold leaf covered ceiling worth over $2 million. Marland built this 928 home to be his retreat. It is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. Mr. Marland s Marland Oil Company and Isaac Blake s Continental Oil & Transportation - merged together to become Conoco, a 20th century energy company like no other. The Conoco Museum is a state-of-the-art museum depicting the transformation from two independent American success stories to one. Opening in 927, the Poncan Theatre enjoyed the golden era of cinema and all that came with it. A $ million restoration project in 994, restored the theatre to its original beauty. Today the Poncan is home to a large collection of hand-painted movie posters from the 920 s & 90 s, all original to the theatre, which hosts numerous musical and theatrical events throughout the year. The tallest bronze statues in the state of Oklahoma live in Ponca City; the 22-foot Poncan Chief Standing Bear and the 0-foot Confident, a tribute to the women that helped settle the west. The Standing Bear Museum and Education Center is home to many artifacts from the six area tribes as well as a beautiful art gallery containing Native American art and pottery. A permanent arbor, located just west of the park, hosts the annual Standing Bear Pow Wow held in September. Enjoy a stroll down a winding trail with tribal viewing courts that tell the story of the six area tribes: Kaw, Osage, Otoe-Missouria, Pawnee, Ponca, and Tonkawa. The famous Pioneer Woman Statue and Museum tells the stories of Oklahoma s pioneering women and their influences on the development of the state and nation through rotating exhibits and historical artifacts. Confident was chosen from the work of twelve sculptors by the votes of 750,000 people from across the USA. Ponca City is also home to the Bryant Baker Gallery, the Matzene Art Collection, the L.A. Cann Gardens, the Wentz Pool & Camp, the Ponca City Art Center, three lakes, eight casinos, opportunities for outdoor recreation on walking/ biking trails and three disc golf courses.
