Our location on the Broads - one of Europe s largest wetlands - means that on-site activities can have a direct impact on the river and surrounding countryside, so we make every effort to minimise harmful effects where possible. We have also implemented many energy reducing initiatives which are clearly visible throughout the park. 02

waveney river centre WE RE AN AWARD WINNING DESTINATION! Waveney River Centre is the Broads multi-award winning destination, set in the beautiful surroundings of South Norfolk s Waveney Valley with stunning views across the river and marshes. The Park is a wildlife haven, where you can spend hours watching birds & insects from the peace & quiet of your holiday lodge or venture further along the river by cruiser or canoe. Our camping & touring park occupies an idyllic south-facing location overlooking the marina and river, and is open all year thanks to our ecofriendly, heated shower rooms. The park features a family-friendly pub, indoor heated swimming pool & café, children s play areas, convenience store, launderette and information centre. A short trip across the river on our new ferry takes you to Carlton Marshes nature reserve and the Angles Way long distance footpath, which passes through Oulton Broad and Beccles on its 77 mile journey. 2012/13 To find out more please call us on 01502 677 343 or alternatively visit our website www.waveneyrivercentre.co.uk 03

Our HISTORY When you visit Waveney River Centre today you encounter a modern holiday destination with everything which today s holidaymakers expect. So it would be easy to overlook the history which has helped shape this beautiful area 04 We see ourselves as custodians of this special piece of the Broads and are proud of its heritage, so believe it s a story to be shared and may be another reason why our visitors return year after year, and why we are able to stand apart from other holiday parks. The site which Waveney River Centre now occupies and Burgh St. Peter staithe have played varied roles throughout history, including being the site where trading wherries would load and unload their goods, and for the ferry which allowed South Norfolk s residents to walk or cycle to Lowestoft fish market. The many photographs we have of our pub The Waveney Inn, or in its previous incarnation The Waveney Hotel, illustrate how time has evolved, yet this building has remained a landmark on the River Waveney, offering rest and respite to weary sailors or indeed holiday makers today! Another notable mark on the landscape of Waveney River Centre is the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Burgh St. Peter, which for centuries was the church of the Boycott family who gave their name to the English language. Its unusual tower is said to be inspired by the Ziggerat temples of Iraq and local legend has it that the devil loaned a poor man money to build the church, and when Satan came to claim his dues the man escaped his fate by dying hours before and was safely buried in consecrated ground. During the Victorian era, Burgh St Peter became renowned for Frank Rice s Zoological Gardens, which featured bears, monkeys and a sacred white camel amongst its menagerie. The attraction was featured in Harry Blake s Yachting Guide of 1912, in which he also told potential holidaymakers that a visit to the local inn must not be missed, for many a good yarn may be heard spun by veteran wherry and yacht skippers, who know little of other life besides that of cruising up and down the Broads. Visitors would leave with the priceless knowledge that the church tower was in fact telescopic and was wound up at the beginning of each sailing season and wound down again to mark the onset of winter! The next chapter came in the 1960s with the expansion of the Broads holiday industry, and the first phase of Waveney River Centre s development as a visitor destination got under way. By the 1980s the business included a much expanded pub, additional marina and an indoor heated pool. Today, our award winning holiday park and marina is open year round and features luxury holiday lodges, 5 star camping and touring and boat hire. We are ever evolving to ensure Waveney River Centre meets the needs of our visitors, so who knows what lies in store for our truly unique destination in the years to come...

A TRULY UNIQUE DESTINATION THIS PARK IS A GREEN CHAMPION! David Bellamy You might think that Waveney River Centre is just an ideal base for a holiday discovering the beautiful waterways of the Broads and soaking up the tranquil atmosphere as you recharge your batteries. 06 Of course, being located along the banks of the River Waveney, in a peaceful and rural location Waveney River Centre offers you exactly that, but we aim to be not only the base for your holiday, we want to be at the heart of it. You ll be amazed at the wide variety of facilities and activities which are on your doorstep, and because we know that no two families idea of what makes a perfect holiday is the same, you can choose what is right for you. Let the children discover their inner explorer, in Eddie s Secret Garden where they can spot insects and hide out in the willow huts, go for a dip in the indoor heated swimming pool - and if there is still some energy left before bedtime the children s play area should sort that out! For the walkers and ramblers amongst you, across the river from the Park is the Angles Way footpath and Carlton Marshes nature reserve. A renowned habitat for many species of wildlife, this is one place to make sure your camera is at the ready! Call us on 01502 677 343 or visit us at: www.waveneyrivercentre.co.uk Of course, a holiday on the Broads isn t complete without a trip on the river, but how you choose to set about your explorations is up to you! Will it be on one of our day cruisers? Are you feeling daring enough for a canoe? You could even take in a slice of history aboard Betsie Jane 1930s classic river launch and let her skipper be your guide. We aren t just about the adventure though, we know you need the conveniences too. With our family friendly pub, pool and cafe, on site store which stocks some of the best local produce Norfolk and Suffolk have to offer, and unrivalled touring and camping facilities Waveney River Centre has all the ingredients for you to create a truly memorable holiday in one beautiful and genuinely unique place.

Help us to Protect The Broads The Broads is Britain s magical waterland, a uniquely beautiful environment shaped by people working hand in hand with nature over thousands of years. Waveney River Centre are supporting The Broads Trust and Carlton Marshes, to help fund projects to ensure that the Broads are kept just the way they should be for the benefit of local communities and visitors alike. As part of our commitment to protecting the Broads landscape a voluntary donation of 1 will be added to your bill which goes to local environment and conservation projects. ENJOY GIVE PROTECT 07

Featuring an adventure climbing frame with scramble net, wobbly bridge, slides and swings. The adventure tower and balance trail are a great way to burn off all that energy! Eddie s Secret Garden Prof. David Bellamy says that we re a Wildlife Haven here at WRC - and he s not wrong! Our secret garden is a child s dream where they can play hide & seek in willow huts and check out the bugs in their hotels and stumpary. The garden is teeming with wildlife, including birds of all kinds, butterflies and ladybirds. Call us on 01502 677 343 or visit us at: www.waveneyrivercentre.co.uk 09

Skippered tours of the Southern Broads are available for full and half day charter - as well as for short trips during the summer holidays. Ferry Service - Opened by Prof. David Bellamy! In 2012 we revived the ancient ferry service across the River Waveney. A one minute trip aboard Eddie s Ternpike takes you to the edge of Carlton Marshes nature reserve. There s a circular walk through Carlton Marshes, whilst for hardcore ramblers the 77 mile Angles Way runs along the river s edge on its way from Great Yarmouth to Knetishall Heath calling at Oulton Broad, Beccles and Bungay en-route. A walk on the wild side! If it s wildlife you re after then look no further than Waveney River Centre. Whether you re spending time on the park exploring our wildlife garden or taking the short ferry trip across the broads to Carlton Marshes, you won t be disappointed by the array of species we have on our doorstep. From otters, kestrels and barn owls to orange tip butterflies and Norfolk Hawker dragonflies we have it all. Church walk Steeped in history the Church of St Mary the Virgin, adjacent to Waveney River Centre, is renowned for its unusual tower. Said to be inspired by the Ziggerat temples of Mesopotamia, it s an extraordinary mixture of the Victorian vison of mediæval architecture, coupled with the very personal taste of Sammuel Boycott. Fishing Angling is a popular sport with all ages and our riverside location is the ideal spot for pike, roach and bream. Rods, bait, starter fishing kits and other accessories are all available from our shop. Don t forget you will need to purchase a rod fishing licence from the Environment Agency which is available from a post office. Please note fishing is not permitted during the closed season 15 March - 15 June. 10

visit our website for pitch Location Native camping Pintail pitches For a quieter, more native camping experience, you can pitch alongside our mooring dyke. This area is particularly suitable for school parties, scout groups and other outward bound type adventures, as well as canoeists and anglers. There is no electricity, lighting or on-pitch parking on these pitches. My stay at your park was superb. Erecting my tent was very emotional but once we were up I could kick back and do all the man things camping involves. The scenery and location for an adventure was priceless and spending quality time with the kids priceless. Thank you very much. Woods Family 27

TOURING visit our website for pitch Location Kingfisher, Grebe & Heron Pitches Caravan / Motorhomes Our touring caravan & motor home pitches are all arranged on high ground overlooking the marina. All pitches are at least 8.5m wide plenty of room for your caravan, awning & car and have electric hookup. Our premier pitches also include water, digital TV and grey waste. The pitches are divided by native hedgerows, to give somewhere for our insect friends to take their holiday as well as marking your boundary. We stayed on a touring pitch at Waveney River Centre. The pitch was in an excellent location to look out on the glorious view of the marina. Toilets were clean and very well laid out. Loved the separate shower rooms, and the key code lock is an excellent idea. Blanchard family 28
