Outer Burial Containers Traditionally, the purpose of an outer burial container is to protect the casket from the weight of the earth above and to prevent the entrance of outside elements. Outer Burial Containers or vaults are not required by law, but cemeteries may require them if they so desire. At Fernwood, we may require an outer burial container in the traditional sections of the cemetery, but only when it is absolutely necessary for health, safety, or ecological reasons.
