Welcome to University Survival Guide Congratulations on being allocated a place at University Survival Guide (USG). We re looking forward to meeting you very soon. This handbook gives you more information about the event- you should read it carefully before you arrive and you may need to refer to it during the event. We hope that by attending USG you gain a realistic insight into student life by hanging out with current students and experiencing what studying at university is really like. Not to mention having a tonne of fun and making a load of new friends along the way! Students who attended USG last year really enjoyed the experience as you can see from the comments below: 2 Would do it all over again Enjoyable from start to finish. Best three days of my life. If you have any questions after reading this Handbook, please do not hesitate to get in touch - otherwise we look forward to meeting you on Monday 25 June. With best wishes Emma, Ezra, Gillian, Lisa & Sarah USG Organisers

To claim back travel expenses you will need to fill in a travel form this can be printed in advance from our website or picked up at registration. Please also bring any travel tickets, receipts or a record of car mileage. If your travel costs 20 or more, we will need details for a bank account sort code and account number to transfer the money to you. The bus will run every 10-30 minutes and the last pick up from Central Station will be at 12.10pm. Travelling by train? Once you arrive at Newcastle Central Station, students wearing green Newcastle University t-shirts will meet you at the main entrance and make sure that you get on our shuttle bus service to Castle Leazes Halls of Residence. If you are travelling through King s Cross Station, London there will be a member of staff in a green summer school t-shirt there to meet you at the gates to the platform to ensure you know where you are going and assist you onto the train. Please come dressed in comfortable clothes and flat shoes. You will not be able to get changed once we travel to campus. USG gives you the chance to try out new things. We have organised a variety of subject taster and personal development sessions for you to attend. You ll also get to meet University teaching staff and use University facilities. Don t worry - you will not be expected to complete any assessments or hand any work in during USG! Personal Development Sessions You will attend two Personal Development Sessions. These sessions have all been designed to equip you with knowledge and ideas that will help you to prepare for taking your GCSEs and find out more about uni life. This will be a great chance to build on your confidence and team working skills. On Tuesday night we are holding a Beach Party at the Students Union just for students attending USG. Fancy dress is optional for the Beach Party, however if you would prefer not to dress up just wear something you would wear for a party (there s no strict dress code!). It is compulsory that you attend all sessions during USG, and we ask you to rearrange any appointments or commitments. If you have a valid reason for missing part of USG we will need to know in advance and require a note from your parent/carer explaining when and why you need time off and what arrangements have been made to collect you and bring you back to USG. You should hand this note to one of the USG organisers when you register. Please remember, once we arrive back at Castle Leazes in the evening you will be unable to leave the premises. 6

You should have already told us about any medical conditions or individual requirements you have. If you haven't, please contact the USG organisers on 0191 208 8379 or survival@ncl.ac.uk immediately so we can put arrangements in place.
