lifetime PASSION The Order of the Leaf Lifetime Passion Achievement Award was established in 2004 as we celebrated Camp Airy s 80th birthday. This award honors individuals who demonstrate their Airy passion by embracing the guiding principles of the Order of the Leaf friendship, loyalty and service during and following their active participation on the Camp Airy staff. Tonight, on the 40th Alumni Reunion Weekend, we honor Marv and Sandee Rosenstein as the 2010 recipients of the Passion Achievement Award. Marv and Sandee sought to give back so that succeeding generations may realize the joy and opportunities of the Airy Tradition. camp airy - order of the leaf lifetime passion achievement award recipients for 2010: marv & sandee rosenstein Marv Rosenstein 1950 Camper 1954 Camper 1958-1960 Counselor 1972-2010 Hike Specialist Sandee Rosenstein 1949-1958 Camper (Louise) 1975-1992 Office 1993-2010 Office Manager Friendships Grow Here 4
ACHIEVEMENT AWARD On t h i s d ay w e celebrate the Order of the Leaf s 40th Alumni Reunion. It is also fitting that we honor this night Marv and Sandee Rosenstein. Both have a long relationship with Airy and Louise. Sandee Baum started as a Louise camper in 1949 and Marv at Airy in 1950. By the late 1950 s both were counselors. In 1962, they got married and spent their honeymoon at Camp Louise s Honeymoon Suite. By that time Marv had started working for the U.S. Public Health Services which lasted some 33 years living first in Boston and then Winchester, Massachusetts where they had their first two of three children, Eric and Stacey. By 1965 Marv had received his Masters Degree in engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and soon became a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service. Meanwhile, Sandee had her third child, Alissa, and moved back to the DC area in 1966 where Marv received his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Maryland. As the children became old enough to go to Camp in 1972, Sandee and Marv began volunteering their help at Camp Airy for 2 weeks each summer. By 1985 they were volunteering for 4 weeks a summer. Sandee s work in the Camp Airy office became so invaluable that in 1990 when Sid Chernak retired and Ed Cohen took his position he hired Sandee full time to manage the Airy office and be a liaison to interface with parents leaving their children at camp. Meanwhile, Marv had established himself as the hiker and surveyor of trails in and around the Catoctin Mountains. To this day, Marv has a file in which he has mapped all these old storied trails. Marv and Sandee have taken part in so many Airy achievements over the years; two of their fondest memories surround the 1991 Time Capsule which will be dug up in 2023 and in 1992 the charitable Hike-A-Thon raising money for the Order of the Leaf Campership Fund. These two unassuming and humble campers have demonstrated their love for all that is the Camp Airy and Order of the Leaf experience: Friendship Loyalty Service. We thank you and award you for your many years of passion for Camp Airy. We love you guys! 5
