WELCOME TO COLOGNE Cologne is located on the banks Rhine river and is the largest city in North RhineWestphalia, 4th largest city in Germany with more than 1 million inhabitants. It is known as one of the most liberal cities, with a special vibe and atmosphere among the people, open-minded, tolerant, and welcoming to foreigners. Cologne offers endless attractions, most prominently, its famous cathedral whose twin spires dominate the skyline. The city s museum landscape is especially vibrant when it comes to art, but also has something for fans of chocolate, sports, and even Roman history. Its people are well known for their liberalism and joie de vivre, and it s easy to have a good time with them in the Brauhaus (beer halls) in Altstadt (old town) or during Carnival. HISTORY Cologne is one of the oldest German cities wıth a 2000 year-old hıstory. The Romans named it "Colonia". It was one of the most important trade and production centers in the Roman Empire north of the Alps. In 1388, the citizens of Cologne founded the first city university in Europe, and it is now one of the largest universities in Germany with over 44,000 students. During the Second World War, around 90 percent of the inner city was destroyed. Postwar architecture still characterizes the face of Cologne today. 3 COLOGNE GUIDE

SIGHTSEEING HEINZELMÄNNCHENBRUNNEN (PIXIES FOUNTAIN) The Heinzelmänchenbrunnen (Pixies Fountain) is the legend of the good pixies who emerge at night to do the housework for lazy people, and disappear in the morning, never to be seen by anyone. CARNIVAL 11TH NOVEMBER: CARNIVAL BEGINS You have been wondering about the Cowboys, Clowns, Pirates, Animals, Flower-Power Girls and many more costumed people filling Cologne s streets on the 11th of November, celebrating during the day, drinking our typical beer, Kölsch, and singing our city s anthem and songs? That s what we call the beginning of the 5th season (our carnival season), which starts on the 11th of the 11th month, November, at 11.11 am! Karnevals Jecke, which means carnival-lover in the Kölsch dialect, celebrate the whole day, already looking forward to the crazy days. The crazy days start on the so-called Weiberfastnacht (Fat Thursday) in February, ending one week later on Ash Wednesday and attract thousands of tourists every year. The city changes to a colorful place with parties on the streets, in public squares and in pubs. PARADE ON ROSE MONDAY The highlight of the street carnival is Rose Monday, a kilometer-long procession during which sweets and flowers are thrown by walking carnival groups or from the decorated wagons, into the watching crowd. Everyone shouts Strüßje to get flowers or Kamelle to receive sweets, collected in bags. HOW TO PARTY ON CARNIVAL Celebrating carnival in Cologne is more than just a touristic attraction, it is a Jeföhl (feeling) as the Kölsche Jecke say. Everyone feels the pride Cologne residents feel living in this open-minded, multicultural city next to the Rhine river. You can learn how to sing the songs, although you might not understand the lyrics, experience how to dance together, although they do not know each other, and get to know a unique event. Why not come back next year and celebrate with us?! 10 COLOGNE GUIDE
