Magee House is a 2-story, Classical Revival dwelling with a boxy form and a hipped roof. The exterior walls have wood siding and the roof is covered with composition shingles. The J.D. Magee House faces south onto North Third Street. Prominently sited on a large lot, the house is among the grandest houses in one of Abilene's oldest neighborhoods. Few alterations detract from its historic character. The most dominant element on the front elevation is the 2-story pedimented portico with 2- story fluted columns and Ionic capitals. One-story porch wings on each side of the portico give the front a symmetrical appearance and accentuate the 2-story portico. These porch wings have columns similar to those on the portico but are not as large or grand in scale. The main entrance, set within the portico, has a beveled, leaded glass oval light in the door, as well as sidelights and a single light transom with similar glazing. A similar entrance on the second floor provides access to the balcony within the portico. Fixed diamond-shaped windows are on each side of this door. Other windows have 1/1 light sashes. Statement of Significance: The J.D. Magee House, built about 1905, is nominated under Criterion C in the area of Architecture, as an outstanding local example of Classical Revival architecture. The house is one of the largest and most majestic historic dwellings in Abilene. The building is associated with the historic context "The Railroad and Abilene's Development into a Wholesale and Distribution Center in West Texas, 1881-1939." Few changes detract from its integrity and it retains much of its original character and ambiance. North Third Street attracted some of Abilene's earliest and most successful businessmen and professionals. By 1910 the street was lined with many grand houses that stood as symbols of the success of their respective owners; the Magee House represents this trend. Dr. Magee operated a drug store that occupied a lot at the prominent street comer of North First and Pine streets. The house is typical of Classical Revival architecture as exhibited in its symmetrical form, giant order Ionic columns, and central hall plan. Although Abilene's growth increased dramatically during the first decade of this century, relatively few intact houses built at that time survive today in a virtually unaltered state. The Magee House, with its 2-story, pedimented portico, is one of the best examples and is a noteworthy illustration of Classical Revival architecture.
