Sub-Regional Workshop on the Development and Effective Use of Intellectual Property Statistics for ARIPO Member States FERNANDO DOS SANTOS DIRECTOR GENERAL Meikles Hotel, Harare, Zimbabwe September 14, 2016

Importance of IP Statistics in Decision-Making Reliable intellectual property (IP) statistics are an important tool in understanding trends in policy, business, and technology worldwide (WIPO) Government: focus on areas of major innovation and creativity. Eg: Many trademarks may signal high rates of entrepreneurship to prioritize; patents or industrial designs may be a wake up call on an industry to prioritize IP Office: Areas of strength or weakness. Eg: ARIPO low numbers on utility models prompted awareness initiatives that changed the numbers Research institutions: major numbers of applications on designs, utility models or patents may show industrial trends and need to re-focus areas of research and potential for industry/research linkages Corporates: High number of IPRs may signal area to invest or develop partnerships / Technology trends
