We must say Sayonara to lovely Japan and our new friends, and fly back to USA. 2

Tokyo This is the capital of Japan. Within a 30 mile radius of the Imperial Palace lives 27 million people, this is 3 million more than in all of California. Circa 1600, the fist Tokugawa Shogun came to power and moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo (renamed Tokyo, the Capital of the East, in 1868). Today Tokyo is an international wonder that has emerged as one of the most modern cities in the world. Kamakura was once the capital of Japan (1192 ~ 1333), and the seat of Japan s first military government. The city has a large number of Buddhist temples and shrines, but is best known for the huge (11.4 meters high) 730 year old bronze sitting image of the Buddha. Hakone is a scenic mountain hot spring resort known for beautiful Lake Ashi and Owakudani with its sulfurous and bubbling hot springs. A soothing and mellow mood permeates the area even as the mountains and lakes have their spring celebration before the warmth of summer arrives. Tsumago lies on Nagano s Kiso Road (Kiso-ji), along the Kiso River in a deep valley nestled in the Japan Alps. The legendary Kiso-ji was the most difficult part of Nakasendo Highway, an alternate to the Tokaido Highway connecting Kyoto to Edo. Of the 11 post towns along the road, Tsumago and Magome are the best preserved its buildings and surroundings are like a Hiroshige print one can almost feel the presence of samurai. Interesting handcrafts of the area include magemono (round cypress containers), wooden cooking utensils and wooden combs made of tsuge which become stronger and more lustrous with use. Inuyama is situated on the Kiso River, and is well known for its castle, the Kiso Rapids and cormorant fishing, and also for its production of textiles and automobiles. Kyoto is a city of shrines, temples & gardens. The best things in Kyoto are reserved for those willing to walk the only way to savor the atmosphere. You ll love places such as the Golden & Silver Pavilions, as well as all the old streets lined with curio shops. Teeming with historical & religious traditions, and birthplace of old Japanese arts & crafts which are admired worldwide, Kyoto has won for itself a unique place among the world s great cities. In spite of progress, this ancient center of Buddhism seems to be a place apart from the busy world, where the spirit of old Japan lives on. Hiroshima serves as a powerful reminder of the tragedy of war. Hiroshima was founded in 1593, when Lord Terumoto Mori (1553 ~ 1625) built a castle and named it Hiroshimajo ; the adjoining area, already populated for centuries, then became known as Hiroshima. It s now the administrative, educational & communications center of the Chugoku District. 3
