to Mayrhofen The popular Alpine resort of Mayrhofen is located in the Tyrol region of Austria and has a deserved reputation for its superb walking in the surrounding Zillertal Alps. From Mayrhofen itself, it is possible to travel by cable car high onto the slopes of the Penken or Ahorn for panoramic walks through the beautiful meadows. There are also enjoyable walks along the wooded valleys to the nearby villages of Brandberg and Finkenberg. Mayrhofen sits at the junction of four major valleys which fan out and head towards the Italian border. The broad of the four, heads south into the high mountains of contains the attractive village of Ginzling. It eventually splits, with one of its arms holding the Schlegeis reservoir, which sits beneath dramatic glaciers and some of the highest peaks in this part of the Alps. Finally, the villages of Finkenberg, Lanersbach and Hintertux. Having passed through these attractive settlements, woods and meadows, the valley comes to a dramatic conclusion at the mighty Hintertux glacier. where the four main valleys meet. Many of the buildings are built in traditional Tyrolean style. The village is lively, with a variety of shops and facilities all within a few minutes walk of the hotel. ACCOMMODATION HOTEL WALDHEIM Fischerstrasse 509 A6290 Mayrhofen Austria 0043 5285 62211 4- star hotel, with a welcoming, informal atmosphere, traditionally furnished in the Tyrolean style. Bedrooms: There are 20 comfortable en-suite bedrooms, all with television, clock-radio, telephone, safe, bath robes and hairdryer. As is normal in Austria, twin beds are in one bed frame with two mattresses and two duvets. All bedrooms are non-smoking. Tea bedrooms; however hot drinks can be bought at the bar. Facilities: The main area for meeting fellow guests return from the walks, wet walking gear can be left in the ski room which has heated boot rods and an area sauna and solarium. Massages can also be booked at the hotel. Breakfast: Available from 7.30am until 10.00am, a cold items. At an altitude of about 2,000ft, the village lies only about 18 miles north of the main summit ridge of the Alps system of buses, cable cars and railway (down the valley) has developed to serve the interests of walkers, tourists and skiers. Many shops and supermarkets close from around 12pm until 3pm. Shops: Mayrhofen has a good selection of shops selling souvenirs, walking equipment etc. If you have any queries please contact the hotel reception who will be happy to help. Up to 1,200ft (360m) of ascent in a day. Please note that the itinerary outlined below can be undertaken in any order you wish. However we have noted some recommendations to ensure you get the most from your day. Walk 1: Finkenberg Gorge This circular route takes in the dramatic Finkenberg Gorge, the Devil s Bridge and the attractive town of Finkenberg, before returning through forest and meadows to Mayrhofen. 7 miles (11.5km) with 1,150ft (350m) of ascent. Special Notes: This is primarily a valley walk so taking the cable car high above Finkenberg to enjoy the views. Walk 2: Penken summer pastures The recently re-furbished Penken cable car takes you up onto the Penken, where the walk follows a circuit through open pastures, abundant with wild mountains. 6 miles (9.5km) with 1,180ft (360m) of ascent. Special Notes undertaken on a clear day. Walk 3: Edelhütte This walk uses the Ahorn cable car to reach the high slopes south of Mayrhofen. The prominent mountain is the Ahornspitze, the highest summit in the immediate vicinity at over 2,950m (9,700ft). before contouring to re-join your outward route. 4.5 miles (7km) with 1,150ft (350m) of ascent. The extension to Am Glatzer adds just over 1 mile (2km) and 200ft (60m) of ascent. Special notes: This is a high level walk, best undertaken on a clear day. Walk 4: Karlalm & Brandberg This walk heads for the mountains east of Mayrhofen, through the hills before To reach the start of the walk, take the bus to Hainzenberg and use the quaint double- decker cable car to gain height. The walk follows a good path that skirts around the base of the Gerlossteinwand passing old farms where refreshments may be available, before descending to Brandberg and the bus back to Mayrhofen. The views over Mayrhofen from the Steinerkogelhaus café are stupendous. 5.5 miles (8.5km) with 720ft (220m) of ascent. Walk 5: A spectacular bus journey winds up to the high dramatic glaciers and high snow-capped mountains. This walk explores the lakeside path before descending below the dam to the valley the river. catching the bus back to Mayrhofen. 5.5 miles (8.5km) with negligible ascent. Take the narrow gauge railway from Mayrhofen to Jenbach, and then the steam-operated rack and pinion railway to the Achensee to enjoy a boat trip www.achensee.com River rafting and tandem paragliding are available from several locations in the high street. This area is known for its Via Ferrata and information on routes, guides and equipment hire are available from Salewa sports shop on the high street. Bikes can be hired from several locations. Cycle down the valley and bring the bike back on the train. WHAT TO WEAR & BRING To enjoy your walking comfortably and safely, it is essential that your footwear, clothing and equipment are suitable.
