Sometimes a horn is more powerful than a gun. When lions stray into a populated areas and attack livestock in rural communities, locals often retaliate by killing them. Hwange Lion Research Project, part of Oxford University s Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WILDCRU), now employs and trains the local Long Shield Lion Guardians who serve as mediators between the communities and the wildlife. This courageous group of local men and women from the village of Dete, deploy drums and vuvuzela horns to keep the lions out of the villages and alert local herdsmen when a lion is near so that villagers have time to move livestock or scare the lion back to the park. WILDCRU S Lion Research Project has radio-tracked more than 100 Hwange lions and their research assists Zimbabwe authorities with conservation strategies. Meet the Guardians.
