Project Update Utah Water Users Workshop March 14, 2012 Jeffrey D. Budge, P.E. Operations and Engineering Manager Steven H. Cain Facilities and Lands Manager
Organized in 1935 Deer Creek Division of the Provo River Project Irrigation water for Utah, Salt Lake, Summit and Wasatch counties. Drinking water for communities in northern Utah County and the Salt Lake Valley. Canal built in 1911 and enlarged in 1944.

105,000 linear feet of 126 weldedsteel pipe Polyurethane coating and lining 626 cfs capacity 36 turnouts 69 Air Valve/manway and misc structures Parallel siphon Seven inverted siphons Forty-one new flow meters to be monitored Three 48 and one 36 plunger valves and turnout valves from 8 to 42. All to be SCADA controlled.
Parallel Siphon 84 Spiral-welded Steel Pipe $7,832,240 Budget $1,714,726 paid by CUCWD to increase pipe diameter from 60 W.W. Clyde General Contractor
To date, approximately 102,000 linear feet of pipe has been placed. The flowable fill and backfill are complete to 95% The welding of pipe sections occurs after backfill. This activity is approximately 90% complete.
By May 1, 2012 the project will be substantially complete: The mainline pipe will be completely installed, backfilled and welded. All turnouts, piping and flow-control valves will be installed and tested. The system will be hydrotested. Approximately 50% of the SCADA controls will be installed and functioning. The parallel siphon will be completed and in service.
Utility relocations Canal corridor encroachments Wet winter Big spring runoff I-15 siphon lining Support the pipe The 666 option Operating during construction
Over 500 crossing utilities needed to be addressed Utility owners required to pay for or relocate their own utilities. PRCEP participants are helping mitigate impact to cities by paying 25% of cities costs and allowing three years to reimburse Project.
Record-breaking snowpack and soil moisture
Due to wet winter/spring of 2011: Inability to compact material in wet bottom Excess amount of overexcavation required Solved by: Flowable fill or CLSM to springline of pipe Broadened definition and use of trench zone material
Several mountain drainages cross the Enclosure Project work areas enroute to Utah Lake Coordination with north Utah County cities to pass runoff under or through the canal
Construction limited to off-season created problems with schedule and logistics Worked around in 2011 by: MWDSLS and JVWCD pumping from Jordan River Limiting deliveries of water Delivering water through a portion of enclosed canal Contractor on evacuation notice
The excavation for the canal has required approximately 12,480,000 cubic feet or 462,000 cubic yards of excavation in order to place the pipe. That is enough dirt to fill 50,820 dump trucks or this would stack dirt vertically on a football field 277 feet deep. There is approximately 32,600 tons of steel in the pipeline. That equals 684,600,000 Twinkies.
There will be approximately 186,000 cubic yards of CLSM supporting the enclosed canal. That would fill 789,012,000 Jello Pudding Snack Packs or make a sidewalk 3,587,012 feet long. Each pipe section is supported in the trench by an average of 15 sandbags. The entire pipeline will require approximately 40,000 sandbags.
