Welcome to Foromic Latin America and the Caribbean s most important annual event on microfinance and entrepreneurship will be held in Argentina. It will take place in a region in which the business and financial sectors are more robust and consolidated than ever before, and in which the private sector is committed to helping solve the region s development challenges. Foromic, a space for business and financial innovations and, in particular, a platform for microfinance, has demonstrated that serving low-income households and small businesses is possible, sustainable and profitable. In 2016, almost 1.200 participants from 43 countries gathered in Montego Bay, Jamaica for the most recent Foromic. This group has evolved along with the conference, and now includes experts not only in microenterprise but also in small and medium enterprise, as well as representatives from financial institutions, entrepreneurship associations, governments, NGOs, academic and research institutions, and others. 1

Background and Impact Foromic was first held in 1998 as a space to promote innovations in the microfinance and MSME development sectors. Through 19 more editions, Foromic demonstrated that microfinance has provided the most successful, efficient and fastest-growing means of supporting incomegenerating activities of low-income and underserved populations. This experience shows that developing growing, empowered micro, small, and medium enterprises is the most effective way to overcome the challenges of poverty. When the first Foromic was held, the region had a total of around 200 microfinance institutions serving 1.5 million clients. Today, partly as a result of the work done by the MIF, the IDB Group, and other organizations, Latin America has become one of the most highly regarded microfinance sectors in the world, consisting of more than 1,000 institutions, supporting an estimated 20 million clients and providing over $37 billion in loans annually. 2
