In 1336 Charles IV looked from nearby Castle Bezděz and instructed that a lake had to be created. Between the 2 world wars the lake became a well-known holiday resort and many Art Nouveau were built around the west side of the lake around Staré Splavy. At that time beaches were created with imported sand and the tourist offer included boat trips, walks and many other activities. Nowadays the area around the lake is popular by the Czech and by tourists from Central Europe that appreciate to take a rest from daily routine in the quite bank of the lake where there are some high standard hotel facilities and restaurants. THE CASTLE OF BEZDĚZ This Castle is often called the king of all castles for its original early Gothic appearance, which has never been tampered with, unlike most other castles. For this reason it certainly belongs among the Czech Republic s more intriguing places of interest. Bezděz is steeped in myths and legends; one of these claims that the local monks hid some treasure here. What is certain is that Kunhuta was imprisoned here with her son, the future king of Bohemia, Wenceslas II. So come along to Bezděz and learn about its history. After viewing the 13th-century chapel you will move on to the Royal and Burgrave s Palace. From Bezděz s tower you can see a quarter of the Czech Republic when the weather is clear. It allegedly got its name from the fact that its walls are as hard as bone (kost means bone in Czech) and not even the Hussite general Jan Žižka was able to capture the castle. The Rohans were one of the ten most influential families in France, and as cousins of the French kings were awarded countless princely titles. Sychrov Castle THE GLASS MUSEUM OF NOVY BOR The glass museum was created in 1893 by hands of glass craftsmen. The professional union of glassmakers contributed to the establishment of the glass museum. In the 1890 s voluntary museum workers played the main part in inception of the museum collection funds. The ground of the collection was based on donations of local glassmakers and business-men, who understood glass craft
best and were able to appreciate both technical difficulty and unique artistic-craft processing of home or foreign glassware. The collection extended and got a good quality thanks to interest of manufactures and export companies and in the 1930 s also due to competitions made by the musem itself. After the completion with numerous commercial pre-war purchasing from former glass firms, around 1960 there began to be formed a unique collection documenting authentically glass production in the region of the Lusitian Mountains at the turn of the 19th century and at the first half of the 20th century. Based on the heritage of its founders, the actual collection programme has followed the development of the contemporary production of local glass companies. It didn t marginalize documentation of both activities of the local glass school studios and individual works of glass artists.the traditional glass competitions named Craft and Art in Glass revived in 1994 and the best works of participants are permanently kept in the collection and used for presentation.
