This ecosystem showcases an astonishing microcosm of East African wildlife environments: including acacia woodland, grasslands, swamp delta and an expansive soda lake. Remote Oliver s Camp is in an unspoiled wilderness far from other lodges and camps. Close to the stunning, rarely visited Silale Swamps, the area hosts both lesser and greater kudu seldom seen in the rest of northern Tanzania. Incredibly diverse habitats, not seen anywhere else on the northern circuit, range from grassland and woods in the north to low hills, scrub and wetlands in the south. Southern Tarangire, a birder s paradise, hosts 550 recorded bird species. At the end of the day, enjoy a wonderful safari tradition: sundowners (drinks at sundown). CONSERVATION & CULTURAL INITIATIVES TANZANIA PEOPLE & WILDLIFE Tanzania People & Wildlife Ngorongoro Conservation Area & Tarangire National Park, Tanzania Eliza Deacon/Asilia Africa $ 25 in proceeds from your safari go to Tanzania People & Wildlife. Tanzania People & Wildlife empowers communities to manage and benefit from their natural resources, to improve the lives of rural Africans and protect wildlife. Tanzania People & Wildlife reduces human/wildlife conflict by working with locals to build Living Walls corrals that protect livestock from wild predators. They also dispatch the rapid-response Warriors for Wildlife team that manages conflict incidents in 20 northern Tanzanian communities. They monitor & track wildlife, collect & analyze data and work with the community. This has lead to substantial decreases in poaching and illegal charcoal production and saves approximately 150 lions each year. Small grants help locals lead their own conservation initiatives. Student programs, such as wildlife clubs and environmental summer camps, educate young people on conservation and community stewardship. The highest-achieving students receive full scholarships to private secondary schools. Tanzanian People & Wildlife s Our Women s Beekeeping Initiative is a microfinance opportunity for women entrepreneurs to run an eco-friendly honey business, and a 100% community-owned campsite provides revenue from sustainable wildlife tourism. Each night you stay at Little Oliver s supports Tanzania People & Wildlife with a per person contribution.

DAYS 10-12 REKERO CAMP MAASAI MARA GAME RESERVE DAYS 10-12 Rekero Camp Rekero Camp/Asilia Africa Maasai Mara Game Reserve One of Africa s most legendary national parks, the Maasai Mara is in the northernmost triangle of the Serengeti ecosystem. Extending more than five thousand square miles south into Tanzania, it s one of the world s largest wildlife refuges. During the annual great wildebeest migration, an estimated 1.25 million animals follow seasonal rains into the Mara from Tanzania and back, migrating as many as 300 miles per year. Rekero Camp, located at an age-old crossing point on the Talek River, offers the closest possible vantage point to see the herds thunder across the waters as they make their way north every August through October. River crossings are treacherous with perilous obstacles swift currents, steep banks and hungry crocodiles. The Mara has superb wildlife viewing outside of migration season as well and the variety of ecosystems here is perfect for honing tracking and spotting skills. Spot the local big cats and shadow a Kenya Wildlife Trust researcher to learn about conservation strategies being implemented to protect them. Includes: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Alcohol & Beverages, Laundry Private guide & private vehicle Wildlife viewing Get your checklist ready Antelope, Baboons, Buffalo, Cheetah, Dik-diks, Elephants, Gazelles, Giraffe, Hartebeest, Impalas, Leopards, Lions, Mongoose, Thompson s gazelle, Vervet monkeys, Waterbuck, Warthogs, Wildebeest, Zebras Activities included Keep your camera close Wildlife viewing

CONSERVATION & CULTURAL INITIATIVES KENYA WILDLIFE TRUST Kenya Wildlife Trust Maasai Mara, Kenya Niels van Gijn/Rekero Camp/Asilia Africa $ 15 in proceeds from your safari go to the Mara Predator Conservation Program at the Kenya Wildlife Trust. Since 2007, the Mara Predator Conservation Program focuses on protecting and preserving iconic predator populations in Kenya, ensuring that lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas and wild dogs survive and thrive. The program s research and monitoring work contributes to local and national conservation and management strategies across the Greater Mara. The Mara Predator Conservation program specifically focuses on community outreach and education. It manages a wildlife collaring initiative to collect lion and cheetah GPS location data at set times. Satellite communication continuously broadcasts this data to researchers who intensively monitor the collared animals to learn more about their behavior and threats that they face. This information is vital to finding solutions and recommendations to protect these predators. In addition to this flagship program, Kenya Wildlife Trust supports a number of other Mara-based conservation efforts and aims to increase their partnerships with future projects in the area.
