From Katie Heck, CCSO, PIO, CC SHERIFF S OFFICE JURY DUTY SCAM The CC Sheriff s Office and the Punta Gorda Police Department are receiving multiple reports of citizens being contacted by phone by individuals claiming to be with the "Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Civil Division." These callers are claiming that the victims failed to respond to a grand jury subpoena and that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The callers then claim that in lieu of being arrested the victims can pay money over the phone using cash cards that can be purchased at local retail stores. The callers are also providing call back numbers and are answering those phones as the "Charlotte County Sheriff's Office Civil Division." THIS IS A SCAM! Remember that official agencies do not conduct business like this over the phone and certainly do not request payments made in cash cards. If you receive a call and think it may be suspicious, always verify the phone number for the agency by visiting the agency website or using a telephone book before calling back. If in doubt, contact your law enforcement agency directly.
