GREAT GORILLAS OF UGANDA YOUR TOUR DOSSIER TRIP OVERVIEW Called the Pearl of Africa by Winston Churchill, this country s wealth of once in a lifetime experiences includes tracking mountain gorillas, following troupes of chimpanzees and the chance to see some of the Big Five. In small groups of 14 people, you ll journey through wildly diverse national parks, open savannah and dense rainforest whilst enjoying game drives, nature walks and boat rides to search for the countless mammals, reptiles and birds residing in their natural habitat. Important note: This tour is only for guests aged 15 years and older. ITINERARY & DETAILS This document aims to give you all the information that you require for a smooth and comfortable trip to Uganda. Please take the time to read this dossier to familiarise yourself with all the aspects of our tour. It includes important information such as airline and hotel details and visa requirements. Your included meal guide: B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner, DAY 1: UK to Entebbe Depart London on your scheduled, overnight flight to Entebbe, via Dubai. DAY 2: Entebbe D You will be met by your guide on arrival and transferred to your first hotel set in lush tropical gardens where you can spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool before joining your group for dinner. DAY 3: Entebbe to Kibale B/L/D After an early breakfast begin your journey to Kibale National Park, an enjoyable drive that passes verdant fields of tea plantations with the chance to stop for photos. Arriving at your rainforest lodge late in the afternoon there ll be some time to settle in to the sounds of over 325 species of birds and howling monkeys and stretch your legs on a gentle walk around the lodge s stunning grounds, which on a clear day has spectacular views of the Rwenzori Mountains whose snow-capped peaks tower above the lower slopes blanketed in rich moist montane forest. DAY 4: Kibale National Park to Queen Elizabeth National Park B/L/D Today marks your first chance to encounter the mischievous local inhabitants during an exciting morning of chimpanzee tracking. With the highest density and diversity of primates in the whole of Africa, Kibale National Park is the optimal place to find one of the 1450 protected chimpanzees as well as the endangered red colobus monkey and more uncommon l Hoest s monkey, all of whom roam freely within 766 square kilometres of protected parkland. This exhilarating walk delves deep into the forest s undergrowth and offers the chance to observe these fascinating animals whose human-like behaviour will stun and surprise their visiting guests. After lunch back at your lodge, continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park, driving through the beautiful Kasenda Crater Lakes, even crossing the equator along the way. The next two nights will be spent at a wonderful safari lodge located on a peninsula within the heart of the park, where dinner can be enjoyed al fresco on the terrace. DAY 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park B/L/D Rise early this morning and depart your lodge in 4x4 vehicles to watch the park s wildlife wake from their slumber. Today s guided safari drive journeys through the park with a chance to encounter herds of elephant, buffalo and antelope, lions, leopards, spotted hyenas and the rare giant forest hog. Your wildlife adventure continues in the afternoon with a leisurely boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, a large stretch of water which attracts a large number of mammals and reptiles including families of warthog, large groups of hippo, and crocodiles basking on the shore. Spend a relaxing evening back at your lodge sharing the day s experiences over your evening meal. DAY 6: Queen Elizabeth National Park to Bwindi B/L/D From Queen Elizabeth National Park our tour takes a leisurely route to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, stopping in the Ishasha Sector of the park where it is not uncommon to see tree-climbing lions sleeping on the large branches of fig trees as well as the other numerous species of big game. There will also be the chance to visit a community project in the local village where the local inhabitants warmly invite passers-by into their homesteads and explain the local elephant trench project to protect their homes from these wandering giants. The donation for this experience is paid directly to the project leaders. You ll arrive at your forest lodge on the edge of the Great Rift Valley in the late afternoon which offers uninterrupted views of the pristine canopy below. Bwindi National Park, located in south western Uganda on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, is considered the most diverse forest in Uganda. Home to over 120 mammals, 345 species of birds, 200 species of butterflies, and 160 species of trees, Bwindi is one of the richest ecosystems in East Africa. The park contains almost one half of the world s population of the endangered Mountain Gorilla, making it an extremely valuable conservation site. DAY 7: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park B/L/D Searching for mountain gorillas on a guided trek is one of the most exciting wildlife experiences on earth and coming face to face with these fascinating creatures is a rare wildlife encounter. The duration of the walk will depend on the day, however gorilla trekking can be a strenuous yet rewarding adventure with time on foot can often amounting to six hours or longer, often at high altitudes. Mountain gorillas are wild animals and, as such, sightings cannot be guaranteed however our experienced guides and trackers are proud of their 90% success rate in viewing these mighty yet beautiful beasts. Be sure to have plenty of battery power and memory on your camera to capture the hour you spend with these gentle giants. Following the trek, you ll return to your lodge and, if time allows, there ll be the option to take a guided afternoon forest walk (at an additional cost) or alternatively you may decide to wander into Bwindi village to meet and chat with the curious locals. DAY 8: Bwindi to Lake Mburo B/L/D Set out this morning on a drive to Lake Mburo National Park, passing through hilly terrain and beautiful rural villages. The park is the smallest of Uganda s savannah national parks and underlain by prehistoric metamorphic rocks which date back more than 500 million years. Along with 13 other lakes in the region, Mburo forms part of a vast wetland system linked by swamps with a rich and diverse habitat of Defassa waterbuck (large antelope), hippos, buffalo and over 350 species of birds. Take in the area s wealth of flora and fauna during a boat ride through the swamps with a chance to spot elusive species of birds including the rare shoebill stork, one of the world s most endangered species. Retiring to your hotel nested on a scenic outcrop at the edge of the lake dinner will be served with views of the waterhole beneath where zebra, warthog, impala and bushbuck often congregate. DAY 9: Lake Mburo to UK via Emtebbe or extension B/L After breakfast at the lodge, drive back to Emtebbe with a break for a picnic lunch before arriving in the early afternoon for your scheduled return flight to the UK, via Dubai, or continue onto your chosen extension. 1

WHAT TO PACK Insect repellent Torch and spare batteries Wet Wipes Water bottle Binoculars and camera, lenses etc. Comfortable walking/hiking boots Gardening gloves for gorilla trekking Sandals Hat and sunscreen Rain jacket Long trousers and longsleeved tops to protect from mosquitoes Packing list for the day of Primate tracking Plenty of water 1-2 litres per person High energy snacks in addition to your packed lunch provided by the lodge/camp Waterproof bag to protect photographic equipment A hat, sunscreen, mosquito repellent A lightweight waterproof jacket IMPORTANT: All tourists entering Uganda must provide Yellow fever vaccine certificates. These documents must be obtained before you travel. You could be refused entry if this information is not presented. Gorilla and Chimpanzee Tracking Health Requirements - IMPORTANT Mountain Gorillas and Chimpanzees are highly susceptible to human diseases including flu and colds. If you are participating in a gorilla/chimp trek then you need to be free of any easily contagious diseases and this is checked at the start of the trek by the Park Authorities. If they are in any doubt of your condition, they reserve the right to prevent you from continuing on the trek. If you are participating in a Chimpanzee interaction programme - please note special, additional vaccines and health certificates are required to be presented to ensure participation. This is because you have direct contact with the chimpanzees. Trekking, in the forest, is a different activity. Physical Accessibility This tour is accessible to most people with a good level of fitness and normal mobility. It involves climbing of steep stairs and getting on and off coaches and boats. This tour is not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties. Credit Card Information As normal practice you may be asked for your credit card details on check-in at the hotel in order to cover any extras incurred during your stay. If you do not have a credit card, you may be asked for a cash deposit. MasterCard and Visa are widely accepted in hotels. Gorilla trekking permits Limited permits are issued per day for gorilla trekking. The trek may take place in another part of the forest (Ruhija), which is a 1.5 hour drive from Bwindi. Poncho for trekking Jumper/fleece Swimwear Binoculars (game/bird watching) Leave your jewellery behind, and if you wear a watch preferably use a hard wearing type Day pack Soft bag for your clothing Personal first aid kit containing travel pills, rehydration powder, plasters, stomach settlers, antiseptic creams, aspirin etc Gloves (gardening type are good) Walking sticks are made available at the start of the trek for some of the steeper and more slippery tracks and may prove to be very handy. Binoculars are generally not needed for gorilla viewing, but very handy if you are a keen bird-watcher. ADDITIONAL USEFUL INFORMATION Luggage Due to space limitations in the vehicles it is imperative that luggage be kept to a minimum. We suggest a barrel or soft bag (15 kg maximum) for your main gear, plus a camera bag or smaller day pack for inside the vehicle. Samsonite/hard bags/suitcases, etc. are not suitable as it makes packing very difficult. If you are travelling internationally with one we suggest you repack safari items into your soft bag, before the safari, and then leave your hard suitcase at your return point e.g. Entebbe hotel to collect later. Clothing on Safari - Dress code and suggestions for packing During your safari, depending on the style of trip chosen, dress code may vary slightly. None of the lodges/hotels insist on any formal type of dress ties, jackets etc so the norm would be casual or smart casual depending upon the level. In towns and cities, and at certain of the more up-market lodges and hotels then long trousers and shirt/golf shirt would be more appropriate (especially in the evenings), or ladies may wear a skirt of course! On Safari - Bush gear ie hard wearing clothes, no bright colours, e.g. greens, khaki and similar neutral clothes are recommended. In the daytime on safari, generally shorts or lightweight trousers, t-shirts, hat, sunblock etc. as it is generally fairly warm (25-35 degrees C). Avoid wearing blue and dark colours in areas where you may find tsetse flies, as they are often attracted to these colours, (this would be in some parts of Murchison Falls for example, check with your guide). We suggest you take something warm e.g. tracksuit, fleece or jumper for the mountainous areas. It is at a higher altitude and will therefore be cooler in the evenings. A rain jacket/anorak is also suggested as it rains regularly in the rain forest areas, even in the drier months. Long trousers and long sleeved shirts are also recommended for general evening use to assist in the prevention of mosquito bites and also as it s generally cooler than during the day. Trekking and forest walks clothing While gorilla and chimp tracking you will need a comfortable, hard wearing, pair of walking shoes or boots with good tread and support. Conditions are generally muddy/slippery. There are uphill sections which may be quite steep and strenuous. It is also advisable to wear a long sleeve shirt and lightweight long trousers to protect yourself from the undergrowth, stinging nettles and biting ants. (Tracksuit pants often get caught on bushes, thorns, etc. and jeans can get very heavy when wet). Gloves are also highly recommended just cheap gardening gloves will do this will prevent your hands being scratched when holding onto vegetation for support, through dense parts of the forest. Tuck your long pants into your socks/boots to avoid biting insects. Your clothes will in all likelihood get very muddy and may not recover to their original state - therefore take old clothing for the gorilla trekking. A poncho or lightweight rain jacket is useful, and a day-pack to carry your lunch, water and camera gear in. Information on tracking Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Forest Walks etc. Primate tracking timings and conditions vary tremendously as they move continuously through the rain forest. It is good to be prepared and remember the weather can change with very little warning. The terrain is often steep and through areas where there are no marked paths. It can be VERY strenuous - it may be just a couple of hours but it can also be for a full day of hiking in hot, high altitude conditions please be prepared for this by being as fit as possible! 3

GREAT GORILLAS OF UGANDA DOSSIER Chimpanzee tracking is generally not as difficult compared to gorilla tracking but still can be a hard hike and requires a good level of fitness especially if you need to follow the chimps which can move swiftly through the forest. You will be guided through the forest on your gorilla/chimp tracking by a Uganda Wildlife Authority (or Rwandan ORTPN) guide whom you will meet at the departure point in the morning of your trek. Your guide can help you book a porter (or two!) so that you can track without having to carry the few essential items listed below in a day pack which you should bring with you. The porters are from the local community and very used to the local conditions and can assist in pushing, pulling and supporting you during your trek, if conditions get tough. They are usually an additional fee, over and above your safari cost, and you should budget on approximately USD15 per porter per day as a fee with additional tipping being optional. As the porters do not have tracking permits they will be stopped a short distance from the point you will be viewing the mountain Gorillas. Please remember to take whatever you may need from your bag to view the gorillas and rather leave valuables at the lodge/camp. You will be allowed up to one hour for viewing of the gorillas/chimps from when they are sighted by your group. This is to ensure that the wild animals are not over-exposed to human presence. Whilst watching them you will also be required to keep minimum distances from them generally between 5-7 meters and your guides will ensure this is enforced. Meals Where there are long drives and days trekking, lunch will be in the form of a packed lunch. WEATHER AND CLIMATE Please familiarise yourself with the climate chart below. Average Temperature for Entebbe 4
