Cold, wind, and travel difficulty are big magnifiers requiring knowledge, confidence, and attention to detail. Survival Training Winter 2013 INFORMATION PACKET Thanks for your interest in this Winter Survival Training hosted by LifeFlight of Maine and instructed by Jon Tierney. For a bio on Jon see LifeFlightMaine.org and/or AcadiaMountainGuides.com. DESCRIPTION The winter environment is much less forgiving that warm days of summer. What would otherwise be an uncomfortable event in the summer can quickly become a threat to life or limb in the winter. Cold, wind and travel difficulty are big magnifiers requiring knowledge, confidence, and attention to detail. This training is designed to be a progressive exposure to winter living and survival skills for people who have limited winter experience and may become suddenly stranded in a winter situation such as an aviation incident, backcountry rescue or snowmobile breakdown. Participants will spend a day and night out in the open forest in mountainous region of Maine. Beginning with basic principles of winter camping, everyone will learn how to stay warm and dry with modern outdoor equipment. As desired, you can remove items such as tents, sleeping bags and fancy clothing from our tool box to develop a higher skill proficiency using alternative items you may have with you along with native materials to construct shelters, start fires and stay warm and comfortable. Instructed by Jon Tierney, IFMGA Internationally Licensed Mountain Guide and Flight Paramedic. CEH available. SKILLS OVERVIEW The survival game attitude, shelter, water, fire, food Navigation: Understanding and use of map, compass andaltimeter to travel from point to point and to identify current position. Session 2: Tuesday, March 5th at 1600 ending Wednesday at 1500. Optional Ice Climbing Day. Join guides from Acadia Mountain Guides for a day of introductory ice climbing. No experience required. SESSION 1 OUTLINE: Starts at 10:00 am on Monday, March 4. Meet at the large Appalachian Trail crossing parking area on Route 26 in Grafton Notch State Park. 8:30 End of Session 1 Participants either depart or stay for ice climbing 9:30 15:30 Stay for optional recreational / team building ice climbing activity. If you can only make it for the climbing day that s okay come on up. Not expecting any issues but you never know. RISK Enjoying the outdoors necessitates a certain degree of risk-taking. You are participating in this course and entering the winter backcountry environment at your own risk. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to minimize various hazards through the application of good judgment gained from a foundation of education and experience. Some of the hazards that can lead to injury associated with this trip include but are not limited to extreme cold, demanding physical travel, vehicle transportation, climbing and camping. Cellular phones and radios should not be relied upon in an emergency. While most risks cannot be completely eliminated, it is our goal to interpret the environmental, situational and group variables and to make educated decisions to minimize dangers to you while at the same time providing an enjoyable and memorable learning experience.

EQUIPMENT Although we may not use all of the equipment listed below, it is recommended that you bring clothing and a sleeping bag appropriate for winter camping in New England. Between myself and Acadia Mountain Guides (I guess that s me too), we have a lot of extra gear so please let me know if you need something on the list. Expected temperatures are -10F 15F although mother nature can always change that. Large, sturdy internal or external frame pack. (rental available) 20 degree F sleeping bag or greater (rental available) EVA 1/2 foam full length ground pad or full length ThermaRest (rental available) Warm footwear such as Sorels, double boots, insulated hunting boots Sunscreen and lip balm High gaiters Insulating mittens Waterproof mitten shells Insulating gloves Thin wicking sock liners and insulating wool blend socks balaclava that covers entire head warm hat Mid - heavy weight insulating jacket or sweater Heavy weight down or synthetic jacket Wicking inner wear top and bottom Insulating pants Waterproof / breathable jacket and pants Personal toiletries Unbreakable bowl, insulated cup & spoon 2 Insulated, wide-mouthed, water bottle or thermos Headlamp with fresh batteries Compass Field Notebook and pencil Basically if you dress for a day of skiing with an extra insulation layer over it you should be good. LIFEFLIGHT OF MAINE / ACADIA MOUNTAIN GUIDES, INC PARTICIPANT AGREEMENT, RELEASE AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK In consideration of the services of LifeFlight of Maine and Acadia Mountain Guides Inc., their agents, owners, officers, volunteers, participants, employees, and all other persons or entities acting in any capacity on their behalf (herein after collectively referred to as LOM & AMG ), I hereby agree to release, indemnify, and discharge LOM & AMG, on behalf of myself, my spouse, my children, my parents, my heirs, assigns, personal representative and estate as follows: 1. I acknowledge that hiking, camping, challenge activities, backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering entails known and unanticipated risks that could result in physical or emotional injury, paralysis, death, or damage to myself, to property, or to third parties. I understand that such risks cannot be eliminated without jeopardizing the essential qualities of the activity. The risks include, among other things: the hazards of walking on uneven terrain and slips and falls: being struck by rock fall, icefall, or other objects dislodged or thrown from above; the use of climbing ropes and equipment; the forces of nature, including lightning, weather changes, and avalanche; the risks of falling off the rock or mountain; the risks of exposure to insect bites; the risks of altitude and cold including frostbite and hypothermia; my own physical condition, and the physical exertion associated with this activity. Furthermore, LOM & AMG employees have difficult jobs to perform. They seek safety, but they are not infallible. They might be unaware of a participant's fitness or abilities. They might misjudge the weather or other environmental conditions. They may give incomplete warnings or instructions, and the equipment being used might malfunction. 2. I expressly agree and promise to accept and assume all of the risks existing in this activity. My participation in this activity is purely voluntary, and I elect to participate in spite of the risks. 3. I hereby voluntarily release, forever discharge, and agree to indemnify and hold harmless LOM & AMG from any and all claims, demands, or causes of action, which are in any way connected with my participation in this activity or my use of LOM & AMG 's equipment or facilities, including any such claims which allege negligent acts or omissions of LOM & AMG. 4. Should LOM & AMG or anyone acting on their behalf, be required to incur attorney's fees and costs to enforce this agreement, I agree to indemnify and hold them harmless for all such fees and costs. 5. I certify that I have adequate insurance to cover any injury or damage I may cause or suffer while participating, or else I agree to bear the costs of such injury or damage myself. I further certify that I am willing to assume the risk of any medical or physical condition I may have. 6. In the event that I file a lawsuit against LOM & AMG, I agree to do so solely in the state of Maine and I further agree that the substantive law of Maine shall apply in that action without regard to the conflict of law rules of that state. I agree that if any portion of this agreement is found to be void or unenforceable, the remaining document shall remain in full force and effect. By signing this document, I acknowledge that if anyone is hurt or property is damaged during my participation in this activity, I may be found by a court of law to have waived my right to maintain a lawsuit against LOM & AMG on the basis of any claim from which I have released them herein.
