Flight Infrmatin Exchange Mdel Operatinal Descriptin Octber 31, 2016 Versin: 4.0.0 The Flight Infrmatin Exchange Mdel (FIXM) is an exchange mdel capturing Flight and Flw infrmatin that is glbally standardised. The need fr FIXM was identified by the Internatinal Civil Aviatin Organisatin (ICAO) Air Traffic Management and Perfrmance Panel (ATMRPP) in rder t supprt the exchange f flight infrmatin as described in Flight and Flw Infrmatin fr a Cllabrative Envirnment (FF-ICE). This FIXM Operatinal Descriptin (FIXM ODD) defines the cncepts f the flight data elements expected t be exchanged using the FIXM standard, it prvides requirements traceability, catalguing the sectins f the Prcedures fr Air Navigatin Services - Air Traffic Management (PANS-ATM ICAO 4444) and Flight and Flw - Infrmatin fr a Cllabrative Envirnment Step 1 (FF-ICE/1) dcuments that specify the need fr each element.

FIXM Cre 4.0.0 Operatinal Descriptin 10/31/2016 1 Intrductin This FIXM Operatinal Descriptin (FIXM ODD) defines the cncepts f flight data elements expected t be exchanged using the FIXM standard. Currently, the FIXM ODD includes a definitin fr each flight data element, as well as alternate names that reflect varius nmenclatures acrss systems and peratinal dmains, relatinships amng data elements, data types, value ranges (where applicable), business rules, and references t authritative surces where mre infrmatin can be fund regarding the data element (including why each element is required in the FIXM standard). The FIXM ODD is cmplementary t the ther FIXM artifacts such as the FIXM mdels and the FIXM schemas. Organizatin f this dcument is as fllws: Chapter 1 - Intrductin - this chapter Chapter 2 - Element Metadata Definitins - explains Metadata used t describe Elements Chapter 3 - Types - defines Types fr ODD Elements Chapter 4 - Elements - defines Elements Appendix A - Acrnyms 2 Element Metadata Definitins Element-level metadata are used t capture the meaning f the data elements, t prvide the cntext in which they appear and their assciated business rules. The element-level metadata are: 2.1 Name This metadata captures a unique, descriptive name fr the data element. The naming cnventin used in this dcument attempts t fulfil the fllwing gals: 1. The data element name shuld nt cntain acrnyms - t the extent pssible. The use f acrnyms raises the risk f the names being used errneusly. Cmmnly used aviatin dmain terms are ptimal fr naming cnventins; hwever, in sme cases, the use f synnyms may be the mst practical apprach. 2. The name shuld express - as much as pssible - the type f data it represents (e.g., time, speed, altitude). 3. Whenever pssible the names shuld fllw ICAO standards as defined in PANS-ATM ICAO 4444 r FF-ICE/1. 4. The names shuld be cnstructed such that related data elements are adjacent in an alphabetized list. Fr example, Alternate Destinatin Aerdrme was named Destinatin Aerdrme - Alternate, t allw its recrd t be dcumented adjacent t anther related data element called Destinatin Aerdrme. 11

FIXM Cre 4.0.0 Operatinal Descriptin 10/31/2016 2.2 Definitin This metadata describes the data element in unambiguus and universal terms such that a reader, with a basic level f aviatin dmain knwledge, can have a clear understanding f what infrmatin the data element represents. 2.3 This metadata captures alternate terms (i.e., terms frm ther dmains that are used synnymusly), and any ther infrmatin that wuld facilitate the discvery f semantically equivalent (r related) data elements. 2.4 This metadata lists any ther (pssibly mre basic) data elements cntained by the data element t which the metadata refers. 2.5 This metadata will be ppulated if the referenced data element is part f anther data element. 2.6 Type(s) This metadata indicates the data type fr the data element being described. All available ODD data types are defined in the Chapter 3 Types. 2.7 Range f Values This metadata indicates the range f values the data element can take. This is accmplished by either prviding upper and lwer threshld values r by explicitly enumerating all the pssible values. 2.8 FIXM UML Path This metadata indicates the lcatin f this element in the FIXM UML Mdel. 2.9 This metadata defines r cnstrains sme aspect f the use f a particular data element. They have the fllwing functins: 1. Describes hw data elements are used tgether in a functinal r peratinal cntext 2. Defines rles r functinality assciated with data elements 3. Describes rules fr using the data elements in specific cntexts 2.10 Ntes This field captures any ther pertinent infrmatin r knwledge regarding the referenced data element that des nt fit in any f the ther data fields. 12

FIXM Cre 4.0.0 Operatinal Descriptin 10/31/2016 2.11 This metadata lists specific surces which further define, explain, and/r prvide additinal infrmatin abut the data element, its cntext and its rle, as well as justificatin fr inclusin f the data element in FIXM. 13

FIXM Cre 4.0.0 Operatinal Descriptin 10/31/2016 3 Types Types in the FIXM Operatinal Descriptin are created t better represent cncepts f data elements and t limit duplicatin f infrmatin. There are tw categries f Types in this dcument: Primitives - used t represent basic building blcks fr infrmatin representatin; these types are nt traceable t specific ICAO r FF-ICE/1 requirements Flight Infrmatin - used t describe flight infrmatin cmmn fr multiple data elements; these types are traceable t specific ICAO r FF-ICE/1 requirements 3.1 Primitives Types Definitin Ntes Reference Alpha String String cntaining nly upper-case alphabetic characters in the range [A-Z]. Basic building blcks fr infrmatin representatin. Definitin Ntes Reference Array The array data type stres a number f elements f same type in a specific rder. Basic building blcks fr infrmatin representatin. Definitin Ntes Reference Blean The Blean type represents the values: true and false. Basic building blcks fr infrmatin representatin. Definitin Character String A string f characters as standardized by UTF-8 Ntes UTF-8 is the default encding fr XML. Reference Basic building blcks fr infrmatin representatin. 14

FIXM Cre 4.0.0 Operatinal Descriptin 10/31/2016 Enumeratin Definitin Represents ne r multiple chices frm a finite, predefined cllectin f chices (cntrlled vcabulary). Ntes The cntrlled vcabulary is specified in the Range f Values field, whenever practicable. If the enumeratin is t large t be included explicitly, a reference is prvided.
