KANHA NATIONAL PARK Also knowns as Kanha Tiger Reserve Located in the heart of India, the 930 km 2 Kanha National park, was one of the original 9 park that earned the status of Project Tiger. Together with a surrounding buffer zone of 1067 km 2 and the neighboring 110 km 2 Phen Sanctuary it forms the Kanha Tiger Reserve. The vast spreading meadows and tall sal trees gives this park a unique identity. It is probably one of the most visited wildlife tourist destination in the country and a study ground for internationally acclaimed researchers. Besides the iconic hard ground barasingha, the park has a significant population of tigers, leopards, sloth bear, gaur, wild dogs and over 1000 species of flowing fauna. WHAT DOES IT OFFER WELCOME TO TIGERLAND To put it in simple words, Kanha offers everything. From reputed hospitality giant Taj to simple home-stay in local village or as the local call it Tola. Two of the three gates, Khatiya gate and Mukki gate to the tiger reserve offer more than 150 different options ranging from bed-n-breakfast for backpackers to luxury resorts with spa. While the third one, Sarhi gate is slowly gaining popularity. The tourism area in divided into 4 different zones and tickets (permits) are issued accordingly. Primarily there are two safari rounds, morning and evening, but with prior booking, one can also book special all day round too. Due to limited number of safari tickets issued everyday, getting one can be a bit tricky, especially during weekends and holiday season. So encourage guests to plan their trip well in advance.
MISTY MORNING SAFARI The highland forests of Kanha are tropical moist dry deciduous type with tall Sal trees (Shorea robusta) and bamboo (Dendrocalamus strictus) on slopes can be discovered with differently. A trip through the Kanha Museum is an exciting and educative experience. Models, photographs, specimens, interesting and illustrated notes on the flora and fauna enhance the visitors' understanding of Kanha's amazing beauty and complexity of the web of life. The museum also has a thrilling light and sound show. An entire building in the museum complex is dedicated to the conservation history of Kanha.
WALK WITH NATURE Two self-guided and interpreted nature trails have been developed to help visitors experience nature first hand. One trail is located near the Khatia entry point and the other is along the river Banjar at Mukki. Visitors can walk on these trails and discover the intricate relationships in nature. HOW TO GET THERE How to reach Kanha by Air The nearest airport of this region is Jabalpur. It is only 160 km away. Nagpur airport is also in the vicinity of this place and at a distance of 265 km. Nagpur is a well-linked airport networked with all the major cities like Mumbai, Pune and Chennai. The international gateway to reach Kanha can be Mumbai or even New Delhi, with further connectivity to Nagpur. Flights are easily available from any major domestic and international destinations. How to reach Kanha by Rail The main adjoining railway station of Kanha is Jabalpur. It is 165 km from Kanha. Nagpur is also an good option and connects all the major railheads of India. So it would not be a problem to reach this place. How to reach Kanha by Road There are numerous cab options giving services to Kanha from Nagpur, Jabalpur and Raipur. The distance between Kanha and the cities of Nagpur, Raipur, Jabalpur and Khajuraho is 300 KM, 260, 165 and 445 KM respectively.
