Hurricane Matthew was a disaster added to the already fragile and difficult situation the inhabitants were facing. Your help was very precious for a situation where survival is still very precarious. Food kits preparation The food kit consisted of 2 small bags of spaghettis, 1 bag of rice, 1 bag of sugar, 1 bag of chocolate powder, 1 bottle of cooking oil, 2 sardine cans, 2 bags of mais powder, 1 bag of biscuits, 1 pack of 12 water bottles. Most of these materials were bought in Dominican Republic because of better prices. The rice and the sugar were purchased locally. The preparation was a long but interesting process. Each afternoon during a week, the employees could volunteer freely for the kit production process. Most of the time we were 30 employees working on assembling the 5,000 kits.
Food kits distribution The distribution was carried out in two different ways. To go faster, we looked for several organizations, either friends, NGO s and clients, who were already on site helping and we gave them kits to dispatch in the areas where they were involved. The rest of the kits were handed out by our team with the help of employees and with the assistance of our office managers in Les Cayes and Beaumont. We then sent the cards to our offices in the southern area. They had to distribute the cards to the neediest and give them a meeting point outside of the city where we would be coming with the truck and make the distribution. This method ensured a safe distribution by avoiding large crowds since we had a limited amount of kits. Several trucks of other people had been looted at that time so we had to be careful and avoid overpopulated areas. We also had 4 police officers who came with us from Port-au-Prince and other ones from each area we went. The distribution was a success!
Solar lamps With all the electricity lines down because of the hurricane, the solar lamp were much needed and provided a great aid for the inhabitants of the affected areas. With the help of NOVASOLAR, we sent 6,300 solar lamps. These lamps were distributed through Novamat Motors s divisions in the south. Lamp models:
