CANNING CITY CENTRE the new energy of the southeast
2 INTRODUCTION From early beginnings as an important cultural and recreation place for the Beeloo Nyoongar people, to being a trading post connecting the colonial settlement of Perth with the hinterland of the south, and through to today s business and retail focus, Canning City Centre is strategically located close to Perth city, the hills, domestic and international airports, major industrial areas of Canning Vale and Welshpool, the Canning River, and is well serviced by public transport. Directions 2031 and Beyond, Perth s strategic planning framework, highlights s potential to become the south east corridor s most important strategic metropolitan centre. Through its Structure Plan, Canning has a unique opportunity to evolve the City Centre into being a place that welcomes new investment, celebrates quality urban design, public amenity and, most importantly, puts people first. Looking to the future, has the potential to accommodate approximately 24,400 residents in 10,000 new dwellings and 10,400 workers in 140,000sqm of new commercial and retail space.

OUR VALUES Working together with community, private sector and government partners, our aim is to revitalise under a shared vision and place values: CONNECTED - will be a connected place that celebrates its heritage as a commercial hub focussed on trade, movement, the river and people. It will be a place that puts people first, including residents, businesses and visitors ACCESSIBLE - We will create a welcoming place, easy to get to and move through, with fresh, green and open meeting places and spaces, a revitalised train station and pedestrian and cycle ways that connect to the river RESILIENT - We will create a place that inspires people to take another look by delivering resilient and innovative design. We will focus on our buildings, their landscape setting, and visibly improve our public spaces and underutilised areas VITAL - Actively demonstrating Canning City Centre s vital position as the south east s primary retail, business and investment destination, we will build a positive investment climate through a strong vision, commercial leadership and credible partnerships that create a shared platform for growth RE-ENERGISED - We will be a place that is safe, fun and leisure orientated day and night, from the Greyhounds to the Cinemas; the river to cafés; from Carousel to Coker Park, through to our people and places Through the Structure Plan, six key strategies have been identifi ed that will enable the City Centre to realise its potential.
6 Cecil Avenue Main Street retail, transit and alfresco dining 01 TRANSFORMING CECIL AVENUE TO A MAIN STREET Cecil Avenue will become s vibrant new retail strip with alfresco dining, generous footpaths, bicycle lanes, shade and awnings to encourage people to walk, meet friends and conduct business. A series of public spaces will link Cecil Avenue from the Cannington train station in the north with the Canning River to the south. New residential, retail and commercial development will frame the street. Albany Highway will continue to feature showroom-style buildings with a proposed cycle and footbridge linking Cecil Avenue with Richmond Street and the Canning River. 02 CREATING A DESTINATION TRAIN STATION Transit-oriented development at the Cannington Train Station Canning has always been well serviced by regional and connecting roads but it is now time to shift the focus to a transit oriented development. This will see identifi ed areas around the Cannington Train Station support multi storey residential development within walking distance, along with dedicated public spaces, convenience retail and leisure facilities such as the recently completed Cannington Leisureplex. The train station will integrate with bus, cycle and proposed light rail infrastructure to create a multi-modal destination. 03 A NEW CIVIC SQUARE Located in the heart of Cecil Avenue, Cecil Square will become the major focus of civic life and will bring together the proposed retail main street with Westfi eld s Carousel Shopping Centre. It will feature alfresco dining, markets, public art and entertainment, along with plentiful shade, shelter, green spaces and bicycle parking. Cecil Square will be one of three new public spaces created along Cecil Avenue, with the proposed Station Square located further north and a forecourt to Cannington Train Station. Market Square will be located midway between Cecil and Station Squares and will be surrounded by entertainment, convenience retail, residential and commercial development.
04 FROM RETAIL TO MIXED USE Residential and mixed use development at the river side precinct 7 Today, is characterised by its show rooms and major shopping centre. To bring life back into the area, welcoming government and private sector investment, and introducing new housing, entertainment and commercial opportunities, will be essential. Residential, retail and commercial development intensity will be encouraged along Cecil Avenue and around the train station, while a surrounding residential frame will integrate with Canning s existing character. New parks and open spaces will embrace water sensitive design and include playgrounds, public art, picnic facilities, shade and recreation areas. 05 WORK AND PLAY Responding to the diverse needs of the people and communities who will call home also means that recreation and employment needs to grow and diversify. In time, opportunities will develop for new industries and economies to move into the area, including medical services, allied health, professional and management services, community and tertiary education and corporate head offi ces. Quality public spaces, transport connections, retail, entertainment and recreation facilities will support a burgeoning workforce and its local economy. Community gathering, art and special events at Cecil Square 06 LIFE IN THE CITY CENTRE For existing and new residents, life in will offer a wide range of housing and lifestyle options, from multi-storey apartment life through to single residential homes. Catering to a range of ages and life stages, each residential precinct will offer a unique identity refl ective of its setting for example, an urban character at the train station through to a river side garden setting near the Canning River. High amenity parks and open spaces will encourage an active, outdoor lifestyle for all while the streetlife of Cecil Avenue will tempt people out from early morning to late evening.
