Bathgate, originally named Bathchet in the 12th century, is the second largest settlement in West Lothian. Once a quiet farming and weaving community dabbling in small scale line and coal quarrying, Bathgate s population expanded rapidly in the 19th century due to coal mining and the town s proximity to the major ports of Glasgow, Leith and Grangemouth. The town boasts an array of shops, an open air market. and a wide range of restaurants and bars. Other facilities include a theatre, a museum and a 4,000 year old burial ground. While for those in pursuit of sport, Bathgate Sports Centre offers plenty of activities, while fishing and golf plays is readily available. Livingston is in relative close proximity to the port of Rosyth in Fife, which runs three sailings a week to and from Zeebrugge in Belgium.
