GREAT NORTHERN CONCRETE TOBOGGAN RACE SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA GNCTR 2019
What is GNCTR? The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is a national engineering competition that brings students together to design, construct and race concrete toboggans. GNCTR is an annual student run competition that started in 1975. In 2018 more than 450 students from across Canada and some from the USA competed. GNCTR provides students with the opportunity to network with others in the industry and build lifelong relationships within the professional community. Students are challenged to use their technical knowledge of structures, materials, and concrete. They gain valuable team skills while working together to design and construct a toboggan on time and on budget. Awards are given for: Best Overall Design Best Concrete Mix Design Best Steering Performance/Design Best Braking Performance/Design Best Team Spirit Most Sustainable Design/Team Most Spectacular Run Fastest Toboggan Best Costumes Best Technical Report People s Choice Award What is a Concrete Toboggan? Teams will work together to build a toboggan that can safely carry five passengers. The toboggan must have running surfaces made entirely of concrete, a functional steering and braking system, and a structural frame. There are six basic rules that govern the design of each toboggan registered at GNCTR: The running surface must be at least 30% Portland cement concrete by mass. The toboggan must safely carry 5 people. The toboggan must have a superstructure roll cage capable of withstanding a crash impact. The toboggan must have a functional and safe braking system. The toboggan must have a functional steering system. The toboggan must weigh less than 300 lbs, excluding riders. The 2019 competition will be hosted by the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta from January 30 th to February 3 rd. For a full set of rules and more information on this year s competition please visit the 2019 host committee website: http://gnctr2019.com GREAT NORTHERN CONCRETE TOBOGGAN RACE SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE 1
Recent University of Alberta GNCTR Achievements The University of Alberta s GNCTR team has been competing since 1975 and has had much success. An outline of our recent accomplishments is given in the table below. Our past accomplishments show our commitment towards the design and construction of our toboggan. The University of Alberta aims to continue this success for the coming 2019 year. University of Alberta Preparations Our goal for the 2019 competition is to construct a safe toboggan that will be the top design at GNCTR 2019. We are committed to having fun while constructing a safe toboggan for all team members. To accomplish this our team needs to be organized, committed to a schedule, and dedicated to the quality of workmanship. Our team is composed of many different facets, all contributing towards a successful competition season. Careful project management is essential for successful operation of the team; to achieve this, an executive committee was elected in April 2018. There are nine different executive positions on the team, which cover superstructure, concrete and costume design, as well as spirit, the technical display, sponsorship and more. Each year a theme is chosen for the toboggan and is the focus of our costume design, spirit at competition, and technical display. WWSki has been chosen for the 2019 theme, based off of the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) professional wrestling events and competitors. This theme will provide creative opportunities with our costume design and technical display, gaining us spirit points and leading us to success at competition. The design of the sled structure and concrete mix will be completed by September 2019. Completing the design early yields sufficient time to source materials for construction in the fall. This will then result in a finished product in December 2019, allowing for sufficient toboggan testing. In addition, selecting a potential mix design early allows for time to perform test batches and select a mix that will satisfy the required strength, behavior, and characteristics for the toboggan. Year after year the University of Alberta GNCTR team receives a great amount of interest from students. The thirty students who make up the competition team are chosen based on hours volunteered during concrete pours, superstructure builds, costume builds, and other team events occurring during the first few months of the school year. This ensures that the team is made up of students who are dedicated, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about GNCTR, the team, and the toboggan design. Why Become A Sponsor? While sponsorship has obvious tangible benefits to our team, such as providing the means to purchase raw materials with which to construct the toboggan, we are confident that the exposure of your company to over 450 students would prove to be advantageous for you as well. A substantial portion of GNCTR participants will be entering the work force upon graduating within the next few years. These students will be eager to work for companies that are both successful in their business practices and invested in the education of future engineers. In addition, GNCTR attracts numerous members of industry, the media, and the general public. This is a direct result of the technical exhibition day and the race day being open for everyone to enjoy. At the technical exhibition, each team displays their toboggan and design information, networks with sponsor companies, and connects with students from other schools. In this way, competitors will be introduced to your company and the media coverage will increase public exposure of your company. In the past, the Discovery Channel, CBC, The Rick Mercer Report, and CityTV have covered the GNCTR competition. GNCTR brings engineering students together to learn and innovate through the building of a concrete toboggan. It s an event we look forward to every year, giving us the opportunity to grow as engineering undergraduates and meet students attending different universities. The generous support of sponsors is what allows both our team and the competition to continue to grow and reach more students every year. We would greatly appreciate any support you can give the U of A team towards the 2019 GNCTR competition. All donations are eligible for a tax receipt.
