The International Lyceum Club of Stockholm, Sweden Welcome to Gotland, the pearl of the Baltic Sea May 20-23, 2019 Post Congress Tour Gotland is situated in the middle of the Baltic Sea, approximately 90 kms from the Swedish mainland. The island offers a milder climate with more sun hours than mainland Sweden. The countryside is remarkably beautiful and unique, from vast soft white sandy beaches to barren landscape and pine-tree woods. Limestone formations (rauks) line the coastal regions whilst a wide amount of historical locations can be found inland, including more than 90 medieval churches many still in use. Gotland is perhaps best known for its limestone formations, which originates from a time when Gotland was located near the equator. Much has happened since then, but the tall stone formations stand there today, proud and strong monuments from a past era. The city of Visby was the main center of the Hanseatic Trade League in the Baltic from the 12 th to the 14 th century. Visby gained World Heritage status in 1995 and is characterized by medieval stone buildings, many facades with stepped gables, merchants houses and historical wooden cottages. The medieval town is encircled by a stone wall which is 3,6 kms long and eleven meters high, with three main gates and 36 towers. Gotland has since long been the home of painters, glass and pottery craftsmen and other artists. Maybe it is the unique light that captivates their artistic senses.
Located on the northern part of Gotland, on the island of Fårö, you will find the Bergman Center, that focuses on the life and artistic achievements of legendary Swedish director and writer Ingmar Bergman.
