Where are the Dolomites The Dolomites are situated in the north-east of Italy, close to the Austrian and Slovenian border. The area is between the provinces of Belluno, Pordenone, Bolzano and Trento. The most important city is Cortina d Ampezzo Venice
A short history of the Dolomites The Dolomites are sedimentary mountains. They originated under an ancient sea called «Tetide», which covered the greater part of the Earth. During 250 million years, corals, seaweeds, shellfish, cephalopoda, settled on the bottom of the sea. About 80 million years ago, due to the push of the African continental plate against the euroasiatic one, these rocks slowly rose giving origin to the mountains. This is why in the Dolomites we can find many fossils.
Soon after these peaks were eroded by water, ice, glaciers, and wind, all of which have continously modelled the shape of the mountains. This way they have contributed to the formation of vertical walls, towers, and needles, which are the unique feature of the Dolomites.
Different types of Dolomites fossils In the ancient mesolitic age, hunters went up these mountains to hunt deer and mountain goats. The grave and the funeral outfit of a tribe leader dating back to 8000 years ago has been found under a big boulder in this area. We will have the opportunity of visiting the museum in Selva di Cadore where these important finds are kept.
In 2009 the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site
