Christ the Redeemer overlooking Rio de Janeiro Veterinary Study tour to Brazil 4 17 August 2018

Colourful district of Pelourinho, Salvador From white sand beaches to lush rainforests and rhythm-filled metropolises, Brazil is a country with a rich history and varied culture. It is also a country that loves animals. It has the highest number of small dogs per capita in the world and ranks third behind the US and UK for the amount of money spent on pet care. Its varied landscapes and geography means veterinarians are tasked with treating not only domestic and farm animals, but a huge range of tropical and wild animals. This tour will show you the varied roles of veterinarians in Brazil in domestic veterinary clinics and university lecture halls, with thoroughbred horses or on livestock farms, training in the azon and working with conservation projects. The tour will be led by Dr William Renato da Silva Mendes, a veterinarian and part time guide. He will not only show you his country but will provide first-hand knowledge of veterinary training in Brazil and the daily life of a Rio vet. Arrive in the iconic city of Rio de Janeiro and spend the first evening at leisure. The following day take in the city s breathtaking views, starting with a train ride up Corcovado Mountain, where Christ the Redeemer towers over the city. After lunch take the cable car to Morro da Urca, the first stage en route to Sugar Loaf Mountain, to take a pleasant walk to the second stage with a superb panorama of Guanabara Bay, Copacabana and the surrounding area. The next morning visit Fluminense Federal University in Niteroi, across the bay from Rio de Janeiro. Visit the veterinary school (where your tour leader studied), meet with staff and Meeting the vets and horses at the Jockey Club, Rio de Janeiro

over the bay at the famous elevator that links the upper and lower parts of the city. Enjoy a traditional Bahian lunch before returning to the hotel later that afternoon. View of All Saints Bay, Salvador hear about the education of veterinary students in Rio de Janeiro. Return to Rio de Janeiro city, visiting one of Rio s many domestic veterinary clinics on the way. Take a tour of the facilities and hear about both day to day practice and the emergency cases the vets have to deal with. The following morning set out for the veterinary hospital at the Jockey Club, which was founded in 1959 and is regarded as one of the best equine hospitals in the state. As well as racehorses, the vets treat military and personal horses. Meet with the vets who work at the Jockey Club and tour their facilities, hearing about the work they do. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure until the evening, when you return to the Jockey Club to see the vets at work on race night. Leaving Salvador behind, head into Bahia State to the region of Cachoeira to explore the work that veterinarians do with cattle and livestock. Visit both a dairy farm and a beef cattle farm to learn about the processes of production and treatment of the animals. In both farms, the responsible veterinarian will be on hand to explain their work and answer any questions. Lunch will be at a local ranch, giving you further insight into life outside the city. Make the scenic drive back to Salvador in the late afternoon. The next morning drive up the coast to Praia do Forte to see the TAMAR turtle conservation project and meet with the team. TAMAR s aim is to not only conserve marine life but engage the coastal communities directly in their work, so that they understand the environment around them. Return to Salvador in the late afternoon. Leaving the Atlantic Coast behind fly to Manaus, the largest city in the azon. Transfer to the azon Eco Park Lodge by bus and then take a river boat to the hotel. The following day explore the stunning rainforest environment with some of the activities available at the lodge, ranging from nature walks to piranha fishing trips and visits to a local community.
