Kangaroo Island is the largest island off the South Australian coast and shows nature at its wildest and most majestic in a magical combination of sun and sea, native flora and fauna. The coastline of the island changes from the attractive curved beach at Emu Bay to the rugged cliffs and roaring surf of the south. On the west are two of the island s natural wonders; Admirals Arch, a huge arch where stalactites are silhouetted against the afternoon sun, a magnificent sight. The other is Remarkable Rocks, huge unusually shaped granite boulders. Day 1: Adelaide to Kangaroo Island (107 km to Cape Jervis) Penneshaw (at Ferry terminal) to American River 40km; Flinders Chase 150km This morning make your way to Cape Jervis for a 45 minute ferry to Kangaroo Island. Kangaroo Island is the largest island off the South Australian coast and shows nature at its wildest and most majestic in a magical combination of sun and sea, native flora and fauna. As it is approximately two hours drive directly back to Adelaide, if time permits, stop along the way to explore the Fleurieu Peninsula and/or McLaren Vale. 7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS DRIVING UP DOWNUNDER Adelaide to Alice Springs Venture into the heart of Australia, meet local characters and discover rugged ranges and vast plains. Day 1: Adelaide to Port Augusta (310 km) There is a choice of routes to take to Port Augusta today. The most direct way is through Port Pirie. This is quite a pleasant drive and will take around 4 hours. A more scenic drive is via Clare. The wineries around Clare are well worth a visit. From here travel on to Gladstone, the small town of Wilmington and to Port Augusta, a busy seaport town which is the last major centre along the road linking Western Australia with South Australia. Day 2: Port Augusta to Coober Pedy (540 km) Leaving Port Augusta travel north on the Stuart Highway into the real outback and desert of Australia. Travel on to the unique township of Coober Pedy. The name Coober Pedy is Aboriginal for white fellow's hole in the ground. This is extremely appropriate as most of the population live underground in dug-outs to protect them from the severe summer temperatures, often reaching 45C. Day 3: Coober Pedy to Marla (234 km) More time to explore Coober Pedy. Leaving Coober Pedy, continue travelling north on the Stuart Highway and pass through Cadney Homestead and onto Marla, which marks the start of the famous Oodnadatta Track. Day 6: Ayers Rock to Kings Canyon (321 km) This morning is at leisure to explore more of Ayers Rock. You may wish to rise early to experience the beautiful sunrise over Uluru or take a walk into the majestic Olga Gorge. Leaving Ayers Rock behind take the Lasseter Highway and pass by the majestic flat topped mountain, Mt Conner. Turn left and take the Luritja Road to Kings Canyon. Skirt the rim of the Canyon and hold your breath as you gaze 300 metres down to the valley floor. The soaring sandstone walls frame the Garden of Eden, a unique waterhole surrounded by palms and ferns. The best time of day for the Kings Canyon Rim Walk is early in the morning when it is cool. Day 7: Kings Canyon to (Alice Springs 474 km) OR Kings Canyon to Alice Springs via the Mereenie Loop Road (322 km) 4WD access only We recommend taking the Rim Walk at Kings Canyon early this morning, but it will be a very early morning to allow you enough time to drive onto Alice Springs. Depart Kings Canyon and return to the Lasseter Highway and turn left. Pass the Henbury Meteorite craters, formed around 4,700 years ago. Take the Stuart Highway north to Alice Springs. Spend the rest of the day exploring this beautiful part of the Australian Outback. Your vehicle will need to be return tomorrow by the same time it was collected on Day 1, to avoid additional charges. Day 4: Marla to Ayers Rock (517 km) Leaving Marla, continue travelling through Kulgera, and then continue north another 85 kilometres to Erldunda and then turn off to Ayers Rock and Yulara Resort. This afternoon head out to the Rock, we suggest taking a slow drive around it before heading to Sunset Strip to see the famous Uluru. Day 5: Ayers Rock An entire day at leisure to explore all that the region has to offer. Take a walk around the Rock, a visit to the Cultural Centre, a Harley ride around the Rock or a scenic flight. At Victor Harbour walk across the Causeway or take the horse drawn tram to explore Granite Island. DAY 04: Victor Harbour to Robe (354 km) Travel up north making your way towards Murray Bridge, then around Lake Alexandria, skirting through Lake Albert. You will then travel along the coast, along Coorong National Park before you reach Robe. Robe was once a thriving ships port and prides itself on the preservation of the town s history. DAY 06: Port Fairy to Apollo Bay (188 km) This morning depart Port Fairy and travel towards Warrnambool. Continue along the Shipwreck Coast and you will come across London Bridge the broken arch, before reaching Port Campbell, a quaint little seaside town. Travelling on past Port Campbell you will first come to Loch Ard Gorge and then a short distance on, the Twelve Apostles, which are huge stone rock formations carved over time by the waves of this rugged coastline. After Cape Otway re-join the coastline and the unmatched scenery which is the Great Ocean Road. DAY 07: Apollo Bay to Melbourne (197 km) The scenic coastline from Apollo Bay to Lorne has been described as one of the most beautiful and breathtaking drives in the world. Near Lorne, visit the beautiful Erskine Falls, before following the coast road through Anglesea and Torquay, recognised as the surfing capital of Australia. From Torquay, travel north to Geelong, the largest provincial city in Victoria. Continue from Geelong along the freeway to cross the West Gate Bridge and arrive in the vibrant city of Melbourne. Your vehicle is booked until tomorrow and should be returned by the same time it was collected on Day 1 to avoid additional charges. 6 nights accommodation (Room Only) 7 days Avis car rental with GPS 1,204per person DAY 05: Robe to Port Fairy (291 km - or via the Grampians 487 km) A choice of routes is available. The shorter route will take you via Millicent, and on to Mount Gambier and then along the coast to Portland and then onto Port Fairy. The longer route means a very early start, from Robe travel to Mt Gambier and then through the towns of Hamilton, Coleraine and Casterton and onto Dunkeld. From Dunkeld a scenic drive will take you through the Grampians National Park and onto Halls Gap. Departing from Dunkeld, travel via Penhurst to reach Port Fairy. Port Fairy is a quaint fishing village with many limestone and bluestone buildings in the town dating back to the 1840 s and classified by the National Trust.
