Prestige Philately - Auction No 175 Page: 7 WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Postal History 517 C B Lot 517 1835 three-page entire headed "Fremantle 17th Septr 1835" & signed "W Nairn", to Hobart, no postmarks but docketed on the flap "Major Nairn/Swan River/Recd January 1837", ironed-out vertical fold. A very early and rare inter-colonial letter: Dr Cecil Walkley had only six inter-colonial items in the pre-stamp period, the earliest being of 1845, a full decade later than this item. Our vendor believes this is the sixth earliest letter from Western Australia in private hands. [The 14 months in transit highlights the infrequent communications between the Colonies] Major William Nairn arrived at Sydney (NSW) in 1814 where he served until 1818. He later went to India with his Regiment but retired to Van Diemen's Land in 1832. Disgusted when an application for a land grant was refused, he moved to the Swan River Settlement where he was granted 8800 acres near York and later acquired a further 3300 acres on the Canning River. The addressee William Morgan Orr arrived at Hobart in 1825. As a merchant and shipping agent he amassed great wealth, partly from his whaling operations. In the letter Nairn acknowledges that he owes money to Orr but whines that his feelings have been hurt: "...when sales cannot be effected it is impossible to transmit regular remittances...i still have ample means to settle and adjust anything between us in a short time and have only to request your forebearance till the end of Decem..."(!) [A similar but defective item of 6/3/1835 from the same correspondence, also full of excuses, sold for $5520 at our auction of 23/9/2011] Our sale of Dr Walkley's collection on 27/11/2010 was marred by the purchase by the Western Australian Museum of many of the early letters. This greatly reduced the number of such items in private hands and must of necessity enhance the value of those few remaining available to collectors. 5,000 518 C B Lot 518 1852 outer to "Ths N Yule/Acting Colonial Secretary/to the Government of Western Australia/Perth" with '[crown]/ MAURITIUS/FE27/1852/=GPO=' d/s & 'ship Letter' h/s (Proud #sl11), 'SHIP-LETTER/[crown]/3JU3/1852/ =LONDON=' cds & 'MISSENT/TO ENGLAND' h/s both in red, Scottish 'PERTH/JN4/1852' cds & endorsed at left "Not for Perth/Scotland" & at the base "Supposed for Western/Australia", returned to London with OC10/1852 transit b/s, no WA arrival marking but docketing on the flap indicates that it was finally delivered to the Swan, minor blemishes. Remarkable! [The docketing identifies the sender as Blyth Bros, a major Port Louis firm founded in 1830, and now absorbed into the island's largest trading conglomerate Ireland Blyth Ltd. Surviving early mail from Mauritius is almost entirely to France or Great Britain. We couldn't find any reference to another early cover to anywhere in Australia] 3,000

Prestige Philately - Auction No 175 Page: 8 WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Postal History (continued) 519 C B Lot 519 1895 cover from England with ½d orange only but not taxed, to Dr Albano Brand at Perth, forwarded to Coolgardie (b/s) with 'ANGLO-GERMAN EXPLORATION COMPANY LIMITED' h/s in violet added to the address, 2d grey added for the redirection fee, minor blemishes. Our vendor states that fewer than six WA covers with postage added for redirection have been recorded. [Dr Brand was Anglo-German's representative in WA] 500 520 PS B Lot 520 1905 usage of 2d Envelope to "DMawson BE BSc/University of Adelaide" with two strikes of the rare 'MULWARRIE/AP24/05WA' cds (RO period), flap torn on opening. Goldmining settlement, renamed from Mount Higgins as RO 19/4/1901; PO 1/4/1908; closed 9/9/1908. [The addressee was the famous Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson] 300 Lot 521 521 D A- A1+ POSTMARKS: '634 MILE T.A.R./2JE37/W.A.' (LRD: first day as a TO & & only recorded usage in the TO period) superb strike on KGV 2d on piece, minor tonespots. PO 1/4/1935; TO 2/6/1937; closed?
