#DCMOMENTS ROME GUIDE by

WRITTEN AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY NICOLEE DRAKE CUCINADIGITALE

Few cities rival Rome s extraordinary beauty, rich history, and vibrant street life. Its ancient ruins, art, and architecture are awe-inspiring. Where else can you pop into a church and see a Caravaggio, stroll through the Villa Borghese gardens, taste the best gelato of your life and get lost wandering the cobblestoned streets and alleys? Whether enjoying the hustle and bustle of the street made famous by Federico Fellini s 1960 film La Dolce Vita, or whiling away hours in picturesque piazzas, there s something for everyone in the Eternal City. Life in Rome is indeed sweet.

VILLA MEDICI Why should you go there? This stunning Renaissance villa once belonged to the Medici family and has housed the French Academy in Rome since the 18th century. The Villa Medici s guided tour explores its beautifully landscaped gardens and elegant interiors with an insightful look into the Medici s remarkable history. What s a must-have? Before your tour, visit the villa s restaurant, Colbert, for coffee, exquisite cakes, and a spectacular view of Rome. When s the best time to go? Open from Tuesday to Sunday. The tour ends with a panoramic view of the Eternal City below. Go late in the afternoon for the best light. VIALE DELLA TRINITÀ DEI MONTI 1, 00187

VILLA BORGHESE Why should you go there? Rome s own version of New York s Central Park, Villa Borghese, is a place to meet, stroll and explore, with plenty of historical art and architecture to discover. What s a must-have? Get cultured at Galleria Borghese, rent a bicycle, paddle a boat on the lake at Tempio di Esculapio, bring a blanket and enjoy a leisurely picnic. When s the best time to go? First thing in the morning to walk the park with the locals. Or make a day of it with your family. PIAZZALE NAPOLEONE I, 00197 ROMA

GALLERIA NAZIONALE D ARTE MODERNA Why should you go there? Galleria Nazionale d Arte Moderna offers an impressive collection of modern art in an elegant grand Beaux-Arts building. What s a must-have? Set aside a couple of hours to admire the Monets, Mondrians and Modiglianis. When s the best time to go? After a sunrise walk through Villa Borghese. It s situated just behind Tempio di Esculapio. VIALE DELLE BELLE ARTI 131, 00197 ROMA

PALAZZO BARBERINI Why should you go there? Palazzo Barberini hosts a beautiful collection of art treasures, and the magnificent architecture and gardens appear as if straight from a fairytale. What s a must-have? Seeing Borromini s spiral staircase hidden behind a door to the right of the entrance. When s the best time to go? It s a lovely place to start the day, and just a seven-minute walk from Hotel Eden. VIA DELLE QUATTRO FONTANE 13, 00184

HOTEL EDEN Why should you go there? Impeccable service, flawless attention to detail, and a panoramic view to rival any in Rome. What s a must-have? Il Giardino Bar is a favourite aperitivo spot for locals, visitors, and hotel guests. Sip on a signature cocktail while taking in the view. My favourite is Il Giardino s Bittersweet Symphony. When s the best time to go? Arrive at the rooftop bar just before sunset to watch the magical transformation of day into night over Rome s skyline. VIA LUDOVISI 49, 00187 ROMA

PIAZZA NAVONA Why should you go there? Piazza Navona is arguably the most beautiful piazza in Rome. Stop to enjoy each of the three fountains, Bernini s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Giacomo della Porta s Fontana del Nettuno and Fontana del Moro. What s a must-have? Its grand centrepiece is Bernini s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, a flamboyant fountain featuring an Egyptian obelisk and muscular personifications of the rivers Nile, Ganges, Danube and Plate. When s the best time to go? Are you an early bird? Then take a stroll through Piazza Navona at dawn to beat the crowds and experience Rome s magical atmosphere at first light. It s breathtaking! PIAZZA NAVONA, 00186 ROMA

BIBLIOTECA ANGELICA Why should you go there? Dating back to 1604, Biblioteca Angelica is considered to be the first public library founded in Europe. It holds the first volume of Cicero s De Oratore, published in Italy in 1465, and an early edition of Dante s Divine Comedy. What s a must-have? If you just want to take a peek inside (or a picture), visitors are welcome, but full access is reserved for patrons. The best way to experience this enchanting library is to book a private tour. When s the best time to go? When it opens at 8.30am, Monday to Saturday, for an unobstructed view of this beautiful room. PIAZZA DI S. AGOSTINO 8, 00186 ROMA

PALAZZO SPADA Why should you go there? Galleria Spada houses a small collection of 16th and 17th-century art by the likes of Rubens, Titian and Caravaggio. What s a must-have? Seeing Borromini s forced perspective gallery on your way out. It s the star of the show. When s the best time to go? Early in the morning for more elbow room. PIAZZA CAPO DI FERRO 13, 00186

CHEZ DÉDÉ Why should you go there? Chez Dédé is a concept store in the heart of Rome, which carries a beautifully curated collection of treasures from around the world, and original pieces created by artist and co-founder Andrea Ferolla. Here you ll find a blend of fashion, art, furniture, design, jewellery, books and vintage gems. What s a must-have? Your wallet. You ll want to take most things home with you. When s the best time to go? After a leisurely lunch. VIA DI MONSERRATO 35, 00186 ROMA

COLLALTI BICI DAL 1899 Why should you go there? Collalti Bici has been building bicycles since 1899, and they rent them too. Pedal like a local through Rome s labyrinthine streets, take advantage of the cycle lane along the Tiber river, or meander around Villa Borghese park. What s a must-have? Ask to attach a basket for even more vintage charm. Bicycles and baskets belong together. Not only are they charming and romantic but they are wonderfully practical for carrying things like Italian picnic supplies. And don t forget your bike lock. When s the best time to go? Collalti Bici rent bicycles every day but offer special weekend rates. VIA DEL PELLEGRINO 82, 00186 ROMA

SANTA CECILIA IN TRASTEVERE Why should you go there? Santa Cecilia in Trastevere commemorates the patron saint of musicians, and contains the partial remains of a medieval Roman masterpiece, the Last Judgement by Pietro Cavallini. What s a must-have? Viewing the frescoes. Ring the bell of the convent to the left of the church entrance for access to the first floor. When s the best time to go? The church is open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am 12.30pm, 4 6pm and Sunday 4 6pm. Time your visit during convent hours to enter the cloisters and see Pietro Cavallini s Last Judgment. Convent hours are Monday to Saturday 10am 12.30pm and Sunday 11.30am 12.30pm. The crypt and excavations are open during regular church hours. PIAZZA DI SANTA CECILIA 22, 00153 ROMA

ARA PACIS Why should you go there? Designed by international architect Richard Meier, the Ara Pacis museum s modern design stands apart against Rome s ancient cityscape. The main attraction is the altar of peace, which dates back over 2,000 years the frieze on the altar is replicated on the reception and concierge marble desks at Hotel Eden. What s a must-have? Meier included a sequence of historical references intended to reconnect the modern structure of the museum with the history of Ara Pacis and its site. The fountain at the main entrance refers to the ancient Roman port of Ripetta once situated where the museum now stands. It s also a great place to sit down and relax. When s the best time to go? Go in the evening to enjoy the soft light through the glass walls of the museum. LUNGOTEVERE IN AUGUSTA, 00186 ROMA

SANTA MARIA AI MONTI Why should you go there? Commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII in the 16th century, Santa Maria ai Monti is one of Rome s most stunning examples of baroque architecture. What s a must-have? Don t miss the frescoes in the dome of the four evangelists, by Cristoforo Casolani. When s the best time to go? Early morning, or late afternoon. Many churches in Rome are closed midday. VIA DELLA MADONNA DEI MONTI 41, 00184 ROMA

LA CASETTA A MONTI Why should you go there? La Casetta a Monti is a charming vine-covered café. It s a great place to take a break and enjoy some cakes and people watching. What s a must-have? Chocolate salami (don t worry, there s no actual salami involved). When s the best time to go? Time your visit to indulge in a mid-morning cappuccino and pastry, or a late afternoon pick-me-up. VIA DELLA MADONNA DEI MONTI 62, 00184 ROMA

CENTRALE MONTEMARTINI Why should you go there? Founded in 1912, Centrale Montemartini was Rome s first power station. Designed by Giovanni Montemartini, it s one of the city s finest examples of industrial design. What s a must-have? The ancient Greek and Roman statues in Sala Caldaia, boldly juxtaposed with diesel engines and furnaces. When s the best time to go? It s very quiet during the week but remember it s closed on Mondays. VIA OSTIENSE 106, 00154 ROMA

MERCATO TESTACCIO Why should you go there? This neighbourhood market is a testament to Testaccio s lengthy food history. It offers a colourful selection of fruits and vegetables alongside local food vendors and restaurants. What s a must-have? Taste a slice or two of pizza from Casa Manco or a meatball sandwich from Mordi & Vai. When s the best time to go? Nibble your way through the market during lunch hour. VIA BENIAMINO FRANKLIN, 00118 ROMA

VILLA TORLONIA Why should you go there? The main building was designed in the early 19th century by Giuseppe Valadier, one of the most important architects of the time who shaped the image of Rome. Frescoes line the walls, and elegant crystal chandeliers hang from the ceilings. What s a must-have? The highlight of the villa is the two-storey ballroom with ornate columns, marble floors, and two orchestra structures for musicians. The room is so in keeping with the era that one can almost hear the music. Casina delle Civette is also located in the grounds and is not to be missed. When s the best time to go? Hop in a taxi after lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the villa and its surrounding gardens. VIA NOMENTANA 70, 00161 ROMA

CASINA DELLE CIVETTE Why should you go there? Casina delle Civette, built between 1840 and 1930, is an unexpected mix of Swiss cottage and country farmhouse and is one of the best examples of Italian Art Nouveau in Rome. It s now a museum dedicated to intricate stained glass, decorative tiles, and ornate woodwork. What s a must-have? Stop by the bar at La Limonaia in the park for a drink between visits to Villa Torlonia and Casina delle Civette. When s the best time to go? After a visit to Villa Torlonia, it s just a short walk through the villa s English-style gardens. VIA NOMENTANA 70, 00161 ROMA
