2019 MacKinnon Tour of Scotland Daily Itinerary Day 1 Pick up at Edinburgh Airport. Twenty minute drive to Bomains Guest house. Tour of Stirling Castle which used to be the Capital of Scotland before Edinburgh was. Bannockburn Battlefield and visitor center. Dinner in Linlithgow & then return to Bo mains Guest House for the night.
Day 2 Visit to Edinburgh Castle. See a thousand years of history before your eyes. After the Castle we take a walk down the Royal Mile stopping at St. Giles Cathedral and other historical places along the way. 15 miles south of Edinburgh we visit Rosslyn Chapel, one of the most intriguing buildings in Scotland. Dinner and back to Bo mains Guest House in Linlithgow for the night.
Day 3 On our way north we stop at Balquhidder where we will see the final resting place of Rob Roy MacGreggor. Driving across to the West Coast we reach the beautiful fishing town of Oban to catch the ferry for Iona. Our ferry first takes us to the island of Mull where we will visit Tobermory.. After spending some time in this picturesque town, we cross over by ferry to Iona. We have dinner and stay the night in Iona
Day 4 Iona Abbey is the Jewel in the Crown of our Adventure! It was founded by St. Columba in 563 A.D. In the museum section of the Abbey we find the MacKinnon Cross. We will search for the burial place of John MacKinnon the last Abbot of Iona Not far from the Abbey we find the magnificent chapel in the Bishop s House which is an island retreat. Catch the ferry back to Oban and stay the night there.
Day 5 Heading up into the Northwest Highlands we visit Eilean Donan Castle, the most photographed castle in Scotland. Driving westward we cross over onto Skye via the magnificent Skye Bridge. Castle Maol was held by the Clan Mackinnon and commanded the strait between Kyle Akin and Skye Continuing on we visit the Kilmarie Graveyard where a lot of the headstones bear the name of MacKinnon. Dun Ringill Fort has a long history going back to the Iron Age and the first years of the common era. Dinner and stay the night on Skye.
DAY 6 Leaving the Isle of Skye we sail across the Sea of the Hebrides to Tarbert on the Isle of Harris. We start our circular tour of Harris stopping at Seilbost, the birthplace of John Macleod. The beach is one of the most beautiful in the world. Continuing on to Northton to see Bill Lawson s publications and geneology information housed in its new location. From the harbor town of Leverburgh we will sail over to the Isle of Pabbay and spend some time on this small and interesting island. We have dinner and spend the night on the Isle of Harris
Day 7 10 miles to the west of Stornoway we will visit the Standing Stones of Callanish and its very interesting Visitor Center. We will sail from Stornaway and arrive back at Ullapool on the mainland in the afternoon. Traveling east towards Inverness we will stop at the ruins of Urquhart Castle which overlooks Loch Ness. We have dinner and stay the night at the 5 star Daviot Lodge which is located 6 miles south of Inverness..
Day 8 Culloden Battlefield and Visitor Center helps us to reflect on the Jacobite Rebellion. See where the opposing armies lined up on the battlefield. Pitlochry a gem of a town. built in Victorian times with interesting architecture & shops up and down the main street Regimental Museum of the famous Black Watch. It holds an incredible collection of artifacts over almost 3 centuries. Back to Linlithgow for dinner and our final night at Bomains.
Day 10 It is time to say farewell to Scotland and haste ye back! I will be taking you to Edinburgh Airport for your flight home or other destination. I want you to have the experience of a lifetime and here is one for the road. Have a safe trip home!
