Opiio A4 Thursday, May 15, 2014 WINNISQUAM ECHO EDITORIAL The details o deadlies Last week brought a uexpected flood of letters to our offices whose authors iteded them to be published prior to Saborto s aual tow electio this past Tuesday. While we were thrilled to hear from so may readers who tured to us as the place to have their voices heard, we were also puzzled by the fact that may of those letters arrived too far past our submissio deadlie to be icluded i last week s editio of the Echo. I the hope of prevetig a situatio like this from arisig i the future, ad to esure that everyoe who wishes to speak out about the issues affectig our commuities has a opportuity to do so, we thought this would be a appropriate time to remid readers of our deadlies. Although the Echo is oly published oce a week, our staff does ot sped the time betwee oe Thursday morig ad the ext restig o our laurels. From gatherig ad filig the articles that fill our pages to choosig which photos to place o the frot page, there is a great deal of time ad effort ivolved i puttig each editio together. Complicatig the process further is the fact that the Echo is oe of 11 publicatios owed by our paret compay, Salmo Press Newspapers all of which hit the streets at the same time every week, ad all of which are prited at the same facility. As oe of the first papers to hit the presses each week, it is importat that we keep thigs ruig as smoothly as possible. To esure that we deliver the Echo ito the hads of our productio staff o time ad i order, we ask that letters to the editor, press releases, ad obituaries be submitted by 4 p.m. each Moday afteroo. To esure that we will have eough space to accommodate all the letters we receive, particularly durig electio seaso, we recommed that letters be o more tha 350 to 500 words i legth. For purposes of verificatio, letters should also iclude the writer s ame, address, ad a daytime phoe umber, ad suggested headlies are appreciated. We are eormously proud of the fact that our readers cosider the Wiisquam Echo their most trusted source for local ews, ad their veue of choice for soudig off o the issues that matter to them. The bill to raise it would add a mere 70 to the paychecks of full-time workers. That is hardly eough moey for a day i Cacu, but about eough for a much eeded bag of groceries groceries purchased with eared moey, ot food stamps. Families would be earig more ad spedig more, producig a worker drive stimulus package. Taxpayers would the ot eed to subsidize corporatios poverty wages with public assistace. There are may soud ecoomic ad societal reasos for raisig the miimum wage, such as: a vibrat ecoomy, job creatio, higher productivity, stable families, time for civic egagemet, but the over-ridig reaso is moral. It is evil for the richest coutry i the history of the uiverse to have ay families livig i poverty, ay childre hugry ad homeless. This is a stai o our humaity. Life supportig ecoomic ad utritioal aid is eve beig elimiated by some govermets. The last chace we have to reset our moral compass is to raise the miimum wage. After all, wages have shruk for geeratios, while productivity has skyrocketed. It s past time for our workers to share i those gais.
