Indian Standard IS : 6053 ( Part III ) - 1971 SPECIFICATION FOR HAND TOOLS FOR FOOTWEAR INDUSTRY PART III DESIGNERS KNIFE 0. FOREWORD 0.1 This Indian Standard ( Part III ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 27 November 1,971, after the draft finalized by the Footwear Sectional Committee had been approved by the Chemical Division Council. 0.2 In footwear industry, designers knife is used by designer for cutting and marking pattern papers while designing. The knife recommen ded in this standard, on account of its improved design and lightness coupled with gripping feature, provides extra facilities to a designer to hold it at ease like a pencil for his work. 0.3 The handle of the Type 1 knife shall be built up of a bent wire with a slot at the end, in which the steel blade may be inserted when the knife handle is in open position and when the tail ends are clamped, the spring action of the wire bolts the blade in position. The tail end is pointed to facilitate its use in prick marking. The finger-catch also provides a rough lined surface to enable fingers to check the knife from slipping. The Type 2 knife shall be such that the blades may be inserted into the handle from the front side and screwed securely: The blade is sharpened before use to a bevel shape in order to have a sharp cutting edge. 0.4 This standard contains clause 6.1 which calls for agreement betweeen the purchaser and the supplier. 0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard. 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard ( Part III ) prescribes the requirements, methods of sampling and test for designers knife, used in footwear industry. *Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised ). 3

IS : 6053 ( Part III ) - 1971 2. TERMINOLOGY 2.l Designers Knife -A knife having its blade inserted through the handle. The other end of the knife is provided with pointed edge to facilitate prick marking. 3. TYPES 3.1 Depending upon the design, the knives shall be of following two types: Type 1 - Knife with wire handle Type 2- Knife with metallic handle 4. REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Material 4.1.1 Blade -The blade shall be made from either high carbon steel, low alloy steel or high speed steel, 1 *O mm thick and having rust preventive coating. 4.1.2 Handle - The handle of Type 1 knife shall be made from mild steel wire ( conforming to IS : 1673-1960 ) with cadmium plating. The handle oftype 2 knife shall be made from brass tube 13 mm in diameter. 4.2 Shape and Design - The shape and dimensions of Type 1 and Type 2 designers knives shall be as given in Fig. 1. 4.3 Hardness - The hardness of the finished steel blade, measured as near to the cutting edge as possible according to IS : 1501-1968?, shall be as given below: a) High carbon steel 693 to 762 HV b) Low alloy steel 762 to 840 HV C) High speed steel 738 to 840 HV 4.4 General Requirements and Finish 4.4.1 The handle shall be finished smooth and the shape uniformly maintained. be 4.4.2 The clamping devise in the handle shall be such that the blade may clamped securely. *Specification for mild steel wire for the manufacture of machine screws ( by cold-head@ process ). tmethod for Vickers hardness test for steel (Jirsf rertision ). 4

IS : 6053 ( Part III ) - 1971 4.5 Performance Requirements - The knife when suitably sharpened and subjected to a practical cutting test on pattern paper shall give a clean edge. The cutting edge shall fully retain its keenness and shall show no sign of distortion or any other defects on completion of the test. Repeat the process of immersion and drying four times and examine visually. 8.4.1 The handle and the blade shall be taken as having passed the test if they do not show any sign of red deposition of copper before or after the fourth dip. APPENDIX ( Clause 7.1 ) A SCALE OF SAMPLING AND CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY A-l. SCALE OF SAMPLING A-I.1 Lot - In a consignment all the knives of the same shape and dimensions shall be grouped together to constitute a lot. A-1.2 Each lot shall be tested separately for determining its conformity to the requirements of this specification. A-I.3 The number of knives to be selected in the sample depends on the size of the lot and shall be in accordance with co1 1 and 2 of Table 1. IS : 6053 ( Part III ) - 1971 A-2. CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY A-2.1 All the selected knives shall be examined for material, construction, dimensions and finish and shall also be tested for performance requirements given in 4.5. A knife failing in any one of the above requirements shall be taken as a defective. The number of defectives shall not exceed the permissible number given in co1 3 of Table 1 if the lot is to be accepted as satisfactory. A-2.2 Two knives if the lot size is 100 and below, and four knives if the lot size is above 100 shall be tested for hardness of steel blade. There shall be no failure if the lot is to be accepted under this clause. For rustproofness of blade and ferrule, two knives selected at random from the sample shall be tested and if both of them pass the test, the lot shall be considered satisfactory in this regard. 8
