MUSTIQUE CHARITABLE TRUSTS AUCTION Thursday 1st December 2016 3

The Trusts will improve the opportunities for children, young people and vulnerable adults while supporting the development of sustainable local communities throughout St Vincent and the Grenadines.

WELCOME MESSAGE Dear Friends of Mustique, On behalf of all the Trustees of the Mustique Charitable Trusts I am delighted to welcome you to Mustique Cocktails. We are indebted to Viscount Linley, Orlando Rock and The Directors of Christie s for their continued generous support it is a wonderful venue and we are very pleased to be back. Due to the enormous generosity of our donors, 2016 has been another busy year for the Trusts and we have supported 38 charities. The focus continues to be on educational support for the most vulnerable, particularly children and young people with special needs in addition to disaster management and climate change education. You will see in the pages to follow details on how the money has been spent as well as information on some of the projects. Donations from the Mustique Charitable Trusts make a real impact every day to many lives and are the clearest possible way for the Mustique community to show that the Island is much more than just a holiday destination. Almost 100% of donations will be received by those who need it most, due to the operation of the Trust being funded by the Mustique Company Ltd. I do hope you have a wonderful evening and that you will continue to give generously. It is only with your help that we can continue the inspirational work. I very much look forward to seeing you on Mustique again soon. SUSTAINABLE CONSERVATION WITH SKILLS TRAINING SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOOD CREATION PROJECT The Mustique Charitable Trusts are supporting a skills training programme at the two correctional facilities in St Vincent. Following on from a successful pilot project funded by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations in 2015, the Trusts were approached to strengthen the production of the vetiver grass baskets and mats by the inmates at Kingstown correctional facility and also to extend the training to a second facility at Belle Isle. VETIVER BASKET & MAT SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAMME Ms Vonnie Roudette, from the Creative Learning Centre, is implementing a much-needed vocational skills training programme in vetiver grass basket and mat making at the Kingstown and Belle Isle correctional facilities with support from the Mustique Charitable Trusts. Ms Roudette is an experienced project coordinator and with her team of skilled trainers will be teaching a range of vetiver grass basket and mat construction techniques. 6

SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISANS VINCENTIAN CRAFTS PROMOTED IN MUSTIQUE Two highly successful craft fairs held at Easter and in August this year showcased the very best of Vincentian arts and crafts. Attended by 30 exhibitors, a huge variety of crafts were on display and vendors reported brisk sales. We welcomed several newcomers, among them were Augustine Sutherland with his fascinating assortment of organic scents and ointments, some made from volcanic mud and ash. Craft work from returning exhibitors like Nzimbu with his unique banana art, Jazzy Organics and interesting items made from recycled plastic bottles by Brenda Mcintosh-Iroha continue to be popular. These not for profit fairs have enabled the attendees to reach the Mustique market and are now a feature in the calendar of events on the island. The participating vendors have indicated that the feedback from Mustique customers has been invaluable in developing their product lines. 8

HELPING TO DEVELOP COMPETENT READERS Low literacy levels continue to be of concern in the primary schools in St Vincent and the Grenadines and therefore the MCTs have invested in projects to combat this. School libraries have been transformed into reader-friendly spaces & remedial reading centres Improved reading scores have been reported on all levels 7 pupils regarded as at risk have passed the Caribbean Primary Exit with flying colours FOCUS ON EDUCATION SCHOOL MEAL SUPPORT We continue to support school meal programmes in primary and secondary schools in rural communities. Many cannot afford to buy lunch and some attend school without breakfast, which has a detrimental effect on their learning. 8 schools are supported, providing a hot nutritious lunch for 400 pupils, 5 days a week 75 children additionally receive breakfast Attendance and academic performance has now improved enormously 9
