REGISTER OF THE CLIFTON MANUFACTURING COMPANY RECORDS, -- 1 880-1969 Mss 136, 200.5 cu. ft., including 292 boxes, 71 oversize boxes, 70 oversize volumes, 5 folders of oversize material, 1 folder of photographs, 1 folder of negatives, 1 oversize photograph, 50 rolls of positive and 50 rolls of negative microfilm Introduction The records of Clifton Manufacturing Company were stored in one of the mill buildings after the Company's closure in the 1970s. They were placed in four-foot square wooden crates and apparently contained only a portion of the entire documentary holdings of the firm. No overall inventory of the Company's records has been located. For the better part of a decade, individuals rummaged through the crates looking for items to sell and for souvenirs. In doing so, records were strewn around the room on the floor in places several feet deep. Whatever arrangement the records had been stored in was seriously disrupted and substantial physical damage was done to the records. d In 1985, Ray Eamhardt, who then owned the mill building in which the records were stored, offered to permit Clemson University Libraries to take whatever records it considered of historical value. During the course of several months approximately 600 cubic feet of material was accessioned as 85-37, the bulk of it being placed in temporary storage in the University's Old Cattle Barn. This represented approximately ten to twenty percent of the records that existed in the mill building. Clemson University Libraries acquired additional material from Michael Hembree and Rev. David Moore in 1989, accession 89-4. The material from Rev. Moore included cloth remnants, ledgers, blueprints, financial records, correspondence, and personnel records. Pauline Klein, Manuscript Archivist, began work on this collection. Mark Smith, Project Archivist, did much of the initial arrangement and description of these records with the assistance of the following students: David Burns, John Dorris, Lori Robinson, and Doria Wood. Additional processing and organization was done by Karen Ellenberg, Manuscript Archivist, with the assistance of the following students: Srinivas Ambati, Hochin Chang, Brian Ford, Maryann Ingham, Lisa McAlister, Brian Martin, Nita Poston, Girija Rayasam, Mark Sanders, and Pradeep Singh. Final processing work was done by Michael Kohl, Project Director, with the help of several of the above named students. James Cross revised this register in 2000. I The arrangement and description of these records was made possible by the South Carolina Textile Records Research Grant from National Historical Publications and Records Commission with matching hnds from the J. E. Sirrine Foundation. These

- generous grants have permitted these records to be available to the public. There are no restrictions on the use of this collection. Additional material on Clifton Manufacturing Company can be found at Converse College in Spartanburg, including correspondence, newspaper clippings, board of director's minutes, photographs, stock certificates, personnel records, and auditor's reports. The Museum of American Textile History in Andover, Massachusetts has a collection of approximately six cubic feet. A copy of the series outline and description notes is for the collection is appended to the end of this register. Corporate History The Clifton Manufacturing Company was founded in 1880 by Dexter Edgar Converse and A. H. Twichell on the Pacolet River site of the South Carolina Manufacturing Company iron works, just outside of Spartanburg. South Carolina business associates and some northern financial support assisted in the venture. Clifton Manufacturing Company also bought water rights on the Pacolet River. There were ten major stockholders, including Mr. Converse and A.H. Twichell. Mr. Twichell was the first secretary-treasurer and was the company's second president. During the years of operations, there were only four presidents: Dexter Converse (1 880- - 1890); A.H. Twichell(1899-19 16); J. Choice Evins (1 9 16-1945); and Stanley Converse (1945-1971). The first mill began operation in the summer of 188 1. The Clifton Manufacturing Company drew heavily upon northern financial support, northern textile experience, and northern textile machinery. The Mill No. 1's plans were drawn by A. D. Lockwood, of Providence, Rhode Island and the machinery was purchased from the Kitson Machine Company of Lowell, Massachusetts and the Saco Water Power Machine Company of Biddeford, Maine. The first mill superintendent was J. Longee, of Providence, Rhode Island, formerly at the Fitchville Manufacturing Company of Connecticut. - In 1893 the Clifton Manufacturing Company employed 1,500 people to manufacture cotton cloth, notably sheetings, shirtings, and drills. The company's selling agents were Wheelwright, Eldredge and Co. and 0. H. Simpson and Co. (Davidsons' The Blue Textile Directory, 1893-1894). The second mill was built in 1896, and the third mill, called the Converse Mill was built in 1896; though the 1903 flood waters swept it away and damage No. 1 Mill and No. 2 Mill. The company repaired the other two mills and completely rebuilt the Converse mill on higher grounds. By 1919, the company had three mills in operation, employing approximately 1,000 people working 86,800 spindles and 2,600 looms, driven by water, steam, and electricity. The combined mill village population that same year was 2,500 people (Southern Textile Bulletin, December 25,

- 19 19). A fourth mill was added in 1949, a fifth mill for weaving was added in 1952, and a sixth mill was built in 1957. During its history, unions made a number of attempts to organize the employees of the Company. The Knights of Labor were active during the 1880s. The 1930s brought another upswing in union activism with the Company signing union contracts during the 1940s. The Textile Workers Union of America organized a major strike at Clifton during 1949-1950. The Clifton Manufacturing Company was profitable until the 1960's when the combination of new manufacturing technology and foreign competition squeezed its profits. In 1965 Dan River Mills bought the Clifton Manufacturing Company, and it became a division of the Dan River Mills. Stanley Converse stayed as president of the Clifton Division of the Dan River Mills until retiring in 1969. In addition to the sources cited above, information for this corporate history is from A Place Called Clifton, South Carolina by Michael Hembree and David Moore (Jacobs Press, 1987) and Clifton: a River of Memories a Companion Volume by the same authors (Jacobs Press, 1988) as well as from a historical note prepared by the Museum of American Textile History. Scope and Content The Clifton Manufacturing Company Records at Clemson University span nearly a century, beginning with the founding of the first mill in 1880. A chronology of important dates in the company's history is included in this finding aid. While there are substantial records from the Company's early years, the bulk of the material is dated from the 1920s through the 1950s. The organization of the collection reflects the operations of the Company. The records have been placed into six series: Community Relations; Correspondence; Financial; Mill Village; Operations and Production; and Personnel and Employee Relations. Because the bulk of the material was retrieved from a warehouse floor, original order was largely non-existent. There is a substantial amount of overlap which reflects both the interrelationship of various aspects of the firm's operations as well as the fact that a number of different individuals organized the collection. With the exception of the small Community Relations and Mill Village series, material in the series is arranged first into subseries and then alphabetically by folder title and chronologically thereafter. The series descriptions can be found at the beginning of each container listing for the six series.

e The records include a great deal of information about the routine activities involved in textile manufacturing including the construction and renovation of the physical plant, purchase of raw cotton, relations with agents and brokers, and the daily operations of production. A variety of records pertain to the firm's employees and concern their health and safety, wages and labor relations, and community affairs. There are substantial records concerning the 1948-1950 strikes at Clifton. The records include a variety of material related to the textile industry as a whole, which is found primarily in the correspondence series.

MSS 136 Clifton Manufacturing Company SERIES #3 FINANCIAL, 1880-1967 The financial records of the Clifton Manufacturing Company document a wide variety of corporate activities from paying its workers to purchasing raw cotton to the sale and transfer of its stock. These records represent only a portion of all the financial records generated by Clifton, the missing records being lost or destroyed. In addition to the microfilm records other material for this series is located in oversize. There is overlap in subjects and type of material among the series in this collection but this is particularly the case with the financial records because almost all the firm's records are related in one manner or another to financial matters. The series is divided into eleven subseries including the microfilm and oversize material. The Bank Correspondence and Statements subseries, 1883-1956, is primarily from the 1920s and 1930s. It includes routine deposit tickets and account statements. The correspondence documents the relationship among Clifton, its banks and its business clients regarding the purchase of cotton and sale of cloth. There is correspondence concerning the investment of Clifton's hnds in financial instruments such as notes. There is also material related to stock transfers and a 1927 listing of stockholders with the number of shares held. The Company Store subseries, 1890-1967, is primarily from the 1940s and 1950s. It includes scattered reports on sales, inventory and profit of the store, canteen, and lunch wagon. The series has correspondence, bills and receipts from suppliers of goods sold. There are recommendations for wage increases for company store employees. There are credit applications by mill workers identifling amount of purchase, downpayment, and in some cases the amount of weekly deduction from their paycheck as well as some lists of unpaid accounts. The Freight subseries, 1888-1 897, documents the shipment of bales either of cotton or of cloth by railroad to points generally in the North. The location of shipment, number of bales, and cost are included. There are some charges for other items also included in this subseries. The Hotel subseries, 1949-196 1, has income statements for this hotel which was operated by Clifton Mills. They include the names of guests, amounts of payment received, and costs incurred in the operation of the hotel. The Insurance Policies and Correspondence subseries, 1 894-1962, includes information about reducing or increasing coverage related to changes in inventory and

- plant, safety and cost savings inspections, and claims. A number of oversize items have been removed from this series. Clifton Manufacturing held numerous policies with a number of insurance companies; of particular note are the files from the A. M. Law Company which includes matters related to stock transfers as well as insurance and the Liberty Mutual Insurance Company which has a good run of employee related accident claims. The Invoices, Receipts, and Sales subseries, 1880-1956, includes a variety of financial documents. There are miscellaneous invoices for the purchase of cotton and lumber as well as for the sale of scrap metal and lumber. Shipping receipts from 1927 document where cloth was sent, the sales agent, purchaser, quality and design (insignia) on cloth that was shipped worldwide. The weekly and daily sale reports of the Print Cloth Group of the Cotton Manufacturers, 1933-1936, includes date of sales, number of yards sold, construction, grade, delivery date, terms, and price. The Stockholder Correspondence subseries, 1883-1939, is mainly about the purchase and sale of shares of Clifton stock, dividends, and the firm's future prospects. There is a good set of letters from Francis J. Pelzer. The Wage Rates subseries, 193 1-1957, includes wage surveys conducted by the American Cotton Manufacturers Association of wages in cotton mills for many different categories of workers for the US and then for the states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The wage change request forms explain why a change in an individual's wage scale is needed and the amount requested. Wage assignment forms document finance company liens on the wages of workers at Clifton. Wage rates and wage rate increases document salary increases made at the mills by categories of employees. The Wage Rolls subseries, 1880-1945, includes some early records documenting construction, expansion and repair of the mill complex from the 1880s to 1900s. Overtime records include composite weekly totals, 1954-196 1. Bond Sales and Other Deductions include scattered records of deductions from the payroll between 1943-1945, 1948 with statistics about workers at the mills regarding occupation, sex, race, union membership, and purchase of savings bonds. There are payroll records for teachers, librarians, and some skilled laborers, for the 1880s, and 1900s- 1920s as well as summations of the weekly payroll, 1905-1939. The Equipment/Supplies/Orders/Timebooks subseries has a variety of information almost all of which is in softcover booklets. The equipmentlsupplies booklets have information about repair expenditures for various parts of the mill. Some detail small routine purchases while others have charges made by other firms for work done at the mill. The order books list date, construction of cloth produced,

- purchaser or agent, their address, number of bales used and remarks. Other order books are organized by time of construction of the cloth and list date, pounds of cotton used, price per pound and total cost of the order. The Spinning Room Time Books, 1930-1950, are not identified by mill number. They list employee name, hours of work, and type of construction produced. Other miscellaneous time books, some called weekly and some monthly, vary in their contents but do list employee name, dayshours worked, and sometimes the rate of pay. The Microfilm Subseries, 1880-1956, consists of fifty rolls of microfilm and is further divided among a number of types of records: wage rolls, child labor wage rolls and permits, wage ledgers and rolls, time books, account books, cash books, cotton records, day books for the horse team, and pick sheets. The first twenty-two rolls were filmed at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History's Records Center and the balance at the Clemson University Records Center. Some of the originals are of poor quality and there are a number of cases where there are missing records. Information about the payment of workers is found in the wage rollslwage ledgers and the time books and both should be consulted. The Wage Rolls include the name of employee, dayshours worked, deductions for the company store, and are organized by mill department or job. Sometimes, the number of pieces produced and who received payment (if not the employee) is included. There are scattered wage rolls beginning with 1880 through 1905, and then rolls for the following years: 19 14, 1916-1919, 1928, 1931, 1932, 1934-1936. The Child Labor Wage Rolls, 1900-1926, have the name of the employee between the ages of fourteen and sixteen, the hours of the day they worked, their rate of pay, the department they worked in, and sometimes their age. The parent or guardian completed the Child Labor Permits form, 1925-1929, which included their date and place of birth. Time Books, 188 1-1904, were kept at the department level and appear to have been kept by department supervisors. They give name, number of days or hours worked, and in some cases, indicate who received payment if not directly the employee. There are a variety of account books from the firm's early years. General Corporate Accounts, 1885-1 898, include summations of the corporation's various accounts on a monthly basis including the disbursement of h ds and receipt for sale of goods. Sales Account Books, 1893-1902, detail the names of customers, their place of business, date and terms of sale, and amount of the sale. Accounts Payable, 1900-1905, 19 15-1920, volumes list in chronological order the person or company to

be paid, amount of the invoice, any discount, freight charge, total amount paid, date paid, and in some cases, the location of the person or business. The Sales Account Ledgers, 1900-1910, are organized by name of sales account and include sums posted and type of cloth sold. The Cash Books and Journals, 1 884-1939, record the disbursement of h ds other than for workers' wages. They are arranged chronological order and vary in the amount of detail provided although the names of payee, account debited and reason for payment are sometimes given. Salaries of Clifton's executives as well as those of teachers and librarians paid by the Company are sometimes included. The Journals include this information in columns. The Cotton Purchased volumes, 1889-1923, include date of purchase, name of seller, number of bales purchased, number of pounds of cotton purchased, and amount paid. In addition, sometimes the location of purchase, bale numbers, and seller's mark are included. The volumes contain inventories of cotton on hand. d MSS 136 Clifton Manufacturing Company SERIES #4 MILL VILLAGE, 1915-1965 It was common for textile companies like Clifton Manufacturing Company to provide housing for their employees through a series of villages that surrounded the mills. The mills provided repairs and conducted tests of the electric currents and meters. They also organized and provided for recreation, like baseball and other sports, in the villages. This series consists of printed material, including in-house publications and information relating to civil defense. Housing and mill village repair records include repair reports, uncollected rent, moving and eviction notices and reports on power and water used in the villages. Mill village test records include reports on the electric meters on the houses and wiring. There are also a few fragmentary records concerning the Mill's baseball team and other athletic sports. This series contains mainly receipts, employee lists, internal correspondence and monthly power and water reports. - General BOX FOLDER TITLE 1 1 The Clifton Review, 1945 2 Civil Defense-Policies, Pamphlets, 1942-1943 Housing 3 Correspondence, 1930-1956 4 Guide for assigning houses in villages, 1949 Eviction Notices 5 1919-1964 6 1957-1959 7 Moved or "Left the Payroll" Forms, 1953-1954 8 People Living in Houses and Pole # 1-2, 1945-1948 9 Rent, Electric Current and Water in Arrears, Mills # 1-3, January 29,1950 Rent Not Collected and Rent Change Reports, Mills # 1-3, 10 #1-3,1937-1938 11 July 1942, July 1944 - March 1946 April 1956 - February 1957

The construction sub-series has inclusive dates of 1880-1953 with the bulk of the records between 1940-1953. The records include material related to various companies that did construction work for Clifton Manufacturing Company such as records about construction in the mill villages and the reconstruction of the mills after the flood of 1903. Maintenance contains records on equipment purchases, inspections, installation of equipment, special instructions and agreements and lists of maintenance equipment that was company ProPertJ'. The mill tests (external) sub-series has inclusive dates of 1933-1962. Clifton Manufacturing Company hired a variety of companies that would test performance in various departments of the mills. These records include production tables, charts and analysis of the department tested and recommendations to appropriate department heads and to the president of the company. The mill tests (internal) sub-series has inclusive and bulk dates of 1933-1963. In addition to the outside testing firms that Clifton would hire, the company performed its own performance tests. These include cotton reports, daily production sheets, drawing reports (the process of increasing the length per unit weight of laps, slivers, slubbers or rovings), filling reports (the yarn running from selvage to selvage at right angles to the warp), fire inspection and power stoppage reports, gains and loss pounds reports, hank sheets (applied to slubbing or roving that indicates the yarn number count), highflow production, interdraft production, looms run, nep counts (a small knot of entangled fibers that usually will not straighten to a parallel position during carding or drafting), overseers reports, personnel and production reports, production reports, pick sheets (a single filling thread carried by one trip of the weft-insertion device across the loom), roller shop costs, rush sheets, slubber (a machine used in textile processes prior to spinning that reduces the sliver and inserts the first twist) and speeder reports, spooler reports, supply room reports, and yarn cost summaries. A variety of these records are in the forms of daily, weekly, monthly and yearly reports. Some have ten to twenty year concurrent runs while others are scattered over the life of the company. The Office of Price Stabilization (OPS) sub-series has inclusive dates of 1950-1953. This series contains government reports and statements concerning the pricing of goods during the Korean War. MSS 136 Clifton Manufacturing Company SERIES #6 PERSONNEL AND EMPLOYEE RELATIONS, 1881-1966 Clifton Manufacturing Company created a variety of employee records throughout the life of the company. Besides the wage records, which are part of the financial series, these records include personnel, medical concerns and correspondence, and unions. The personnel records include child labor permits, letters of applications for jobs, leaves of absences, personnel lists and work contracts. The work contracts are dated 188 1 but the bulk of the records are 19 15-1966. A personnel list is included with inclusive dates of 1940-1966. These records provide information on beginning employment, training, work progress and termination of employment. Information concerning the employee's family is also included on the forms. Clifton Manufacturing Company provided medical care for employees hurt on the job and these accidents were reported in the nurse's daily and monthly reports. When outside care was needed, there were several doctors that provided care in the Spartanburg area. Included in these records are children's and families' special clinic reports, nurse's daily and monthly reports and correspondence with several area doctors concerning employees. There is additional information related to employee work - related injuries in series #3 among the correspondence of insurance companies. Textile unions played an important part in the history of the Clifton Manufacturing Company. From its starting date of 188 1, unions tried to organize the mills. According to the book, A Place Called Clifton, by Michael Hembree and David Moore, an attempt was made by the Knights of Labor to organize in October 1886 and they struck in 1887. The mill owners put it down and fired anybody connected with the movement. There was another small strike in 19 14 by the Loom Fixers who struck in protest of workloads. This too was settled quickly. It was not until the General Strike of 1934 that some headway was made in the unionization of Clifton Mills. Records are fragmentary concerning the 1934 strike. The first agreement with the Textile Workers Unions of America is 194 1. Correspondence indicates that there was a possible strike in 1940 at the #2 Mill. There was a small strike in June 1942 at # 1 but the bulk of the records concern the loom fixers strike of 1949-1950. Included in these records are correspondence with the unions, negotiating committees meeting records, grievance data, personal grievances, internal correspondence and reports, notes and reports on striking employees, correspondence to the company and stock reports at the beginning of the strike. Also included are union agreements with other
