A Non-Profit Organization JULY 2014 SPARTANBURG SKI and ESTABLISHED 1970 OUTING CLUB MEMBER CRESCENT SKI COUNCIL July 12 th - Mini-Social at Larkin s on the Lake (Lure) (Page 4) July 17 th - Music By The Lake at Furman (Page 4) http://www.spartanburgskiclub.org

President s Corner. If you don t think summer is here, you must not be living in the Spartanburg area. As I write this, the first day of summer is pushing its way in. We ve got plenty of activities planned for all you skiers and non-skiers too. Mark recently took us on a lovely hike in the Keowee lake area. He was probably wondering if he d ever take us again. Had a couple of hikers seen the snake he might have lost them then and there. Experienced hikers never got lost but took a wrong turn, and he did his Boy Scout duty to retrieve them. Another hiker found some lovely mushrooms and sounded like a kid in a candy store. When we came upon some campfires where there were campers, we wondered if she was going to ask to borrow their frying pan. All in all it was a good day and after a head count we all arrived home safely. The LaZoom bus tour of Asheville was also a hit. Lunch at Pack s Tavern was awesome, as was the comedy of Ms. Earlene and her troupe. Last month s meeting proved to be another great turnout. Bob and Diane, thanks for hosting, and especially for having the great weather at the lake. There will be no meeting in July, as it falls so close to our Independence Day, that we knew most of you already had plans. My plans are to stay indoors where hopefully it will be cool. Our August meeting will be at Ted s and my home, also on Lake Bowen. Jan will be taking sign ups for that later. Rafting/camping in the Nantahala, paddling around Lake Lanier, picnic and music at Furman, and of course Mike s wonderful socials are all part of our summer events. Of course we also have the details of the Crescent trips this next season and the details on how to sign up. Don t forget to visit our website to see pictures of these events. Taylor does a wonderful job of documenting our activities. Ask your friends to join us at some of the upcoming events, the more the merrier. And of course Crescent has a Facebook page, so be sure and visit it also. You just may see yourself in one of their pictures. As I finish this month s article I am looking forward to the Greenville Drive game tomorrow. Mike thanks for booking that, and the dinner at Smoke on the water! Have a very happy and safe Fourth of July! See you at the next event Conni Harrell President, SSOC Page 2

Mid-summer Meeting Information July will be upon us before we know what is happening. Because of low attendance during past July meetings and we would be meeting on the weekend of the 4 th, it was decided to not have a membership meeting during the month of July. There will be other opportunities to get together during the month so you shouldn t have severe withdrawal symptoms! But plan ahead for our August 2 membership meeting which will be held at Ted Mueller/Conni Harrell s Lake Bowen waterfront complex. Early arrival time to play in the water will be 4:00 PM. We will have a 7:00 PM membership meeting and serve dinner at 7:30 PM. If you come early to play, feel free to bring your own afternoon snacks to share, and your own preferred beverages to stave off the August heat. The club will provide wine (red and white), beer, and sodas beginning at 6:00 PM, and as always, if you have a favorite beverage feel free to bring it along. The covered dish dinner will be served after the membership meeting, about 7:30 PM. Bring your favorite dish, or try out a new one!! The surprise of it all, and the chance to try out new recipes, is what makes a covered dish meal so much fun. Contact Jan for directions and so we have a head count to know how much in the way of beverages we need to buy for the evening. See you there!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jan Sarratt 489-1606 Page 3

July Mini-Social Larkin s on the Lake Saturday, July 12, 2014, 12:00 Noon Our next social will be at Larkin s on Lake Lure, NC. We have reservations for outside dining by the lake. There is a great view and always good food. Their website is http://www.larkinsonthelake.com. Please note this will be held on Saturday at noon. Please let me know if you plan to attend. Mike Rogers, Socials kwizen@bellsouth.net 864-578-0618 Music by the Lake Thursday, July 17, 2014, 7:30 PM Furman University Lakeside Amphitheater What could be better than a lakeside concert of Bluegrass music and a picnic. The Club will purchase Calabash chicken and fixings and the attendees will divide the costs. Each participant will bring their own beverage of choice. It is held beside the lake at Furman University in Greenville and is free. We can meet at Appleby s near Westgate Mall at 3:30 PM and carpool to Furman. Here is Furman s website http://www2.furman.edu/academics/music/precollegeandadultprogra ms/pages/musicbythelake.aspx. Please let me know if you will attend and if you will carpool or meet us there. PLANT SALE A BIG SUCCESS! At the June meeting at the Butscher s we had some plants that Ted had donated available for purchase to help support the club s fundraising treasury! I am thrilled to say we made $52 that s awesome! I hope everyone s spider plants, basil, aloe, hosta & sedum are doing well thanks for all your support! Music On Main News??? Well, by the time this newsletter is published, Music On Main will be the 2014 fundraiser of the past. I hope! Without a crystal ball, I can only hope the weather held & the crowd was good & that we made some moola! If we did I thank all of you who volunteered your time to help if we didn t get to work it due to weather, well then I still thank all of you who volunteered anyway. Whatcha gonna do?? NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
