Volume 77 Issue 35 Tuesday 10 th April 2012 President : Stephen Roe. Chief Editor : Richard Lawrence Our Speaker This week : Connie Maina Museums are Connie s passion With vast experience in the operations and management of Museums Connie gave us her insights into the world of the National Museum of Kenya. As an experienced Director of The National Museum of Kenya, Connie has some wonderful knowledge into some of the oldest and most precious artifacts in Kenya. The NMK comprises over 25 regional museums and over 100 sites around Kenya including four World Heritage sites. Sites include beaches, deserts, sacred forests, grasslands, lakes and old Portugese colonial relics from the 1500 s. Connie informed us about how the Cradle of Humankind was located in Kenya and that one of the oldest human fossils was found named Turkana Boy and that he has been dated to be over 1.2 million years old. She also shared the fact that we humans are cousins to the Chimpanzee which didn t come as a surprise to some Rotary members! Connie presented us with further information about the cultural diversity of Kenya which was both a good thing and at times (particularly political ) a difficult issue for the country to deal with. Also Connie mentioned that Tourism has been increasing in Kenya although wildlife hunting had been greatly reduced as losses of some wildlife numbers had become a problem. Next Weeks Speaker : No Rotary meeting on Tuesday we have the Rotary Presents on Friday 20 th April at Moonee Valley Race Course with Jobe Watson and David Evans from Essendon Football Club.

Postman Pat Back in the 1940 s Pat O Connell started his career with what was then the Government conglomerate known as the PMG or Post Master General. In those early days it cost 2 ½ pence to post a letter anywhere in Australia and each Post Office had the telephone exchange attached to it with an operator pulling and pushing cables in and out of sockets! Pat says there was many delays with phone calls in those days! Hey what s changed! The sending of telegrams were all done by morse code and it cost 6 pence to send 14 words! In the 1960 s Co-axial cable was installed which made telephoning much easier and then in the 1970 s electronic letter sorting arrived to speed things up in the mail dept. Now Pat says we have really arrived with ipads, internet, facebook and emails. Thanks Pat that was a great 3 minute trip down memory lane. Pat always got the mail through.
