Valencia CUENCA VALENCIA There are few cities like Valencia, able to harmoniously combine the remnants of its farthest past, dating to the year 138 BC, with the most innovative and avant-gardebuildings from the new millennium. Valencia is trade and culture, cinema, theatre, museums, magic, business. It is the center of international and avant-garde design, and one of the most active cities in Europe regarding fairs and conferences. Thanks to its location, Valencia has historically been Spain s Mediterranean port and has that special charm of cities that are also seaports. And the fine sand and clean water, the vastness of the sea and the closeness of the coastal mountains make the Valencian coast uniquely attractive. There are outstanding beaches and dunes at Canet d En Berenguer, where the coastline becomes leisurely and residential, as it does to the north of the Valencian capital, where small tourist town (La Pobla de Farnals, Alboraya, and El Puig) have emerged where only a few years ago fruit and vegetables were grown. In addition, still within the city of Valencia, the beaches of La Malvarrosa and Levante offer a wide variety of places to dine and enjoy a quiet evening by the sea. To the south, nature becomes predominant at Saler Beach and in the L Albufera Nature Reserve, where the sun can be enjoyed in unique surroundings. The beaches of Cullera, Gandía and Oliva combine beautiful landscapes with a number of sporting and recreational facilities. Interesting routes await you inland, such as the one defined by the course of the Turia River, or charming towns like Buñol, Requena and Xátiva. 4

The Albufera Nature Reserve in Valencia CUENCA VALENCIA L'Albufera, a valuable natural area. This ancient marine gulf, evolved into a freshwater lake, is one of the most important wetlands in Spain. This lake appears on the List of Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention). It has also been declared a Special Bird Protection Area (ZEPA). The area covered by this declaration is the Albufera lake, its wetland environment, and the coastal band or cordon (Dehesa del Saler) adjoining them. The protected territory includes part of the municipal districts of Valencia, Alfafar, Sedaví, Catarroja, Massanassa, Albal, Beniparrell, Silla, Sollana, Sueca, Cullera, Albalat de la Ribera and Algemesí. The formation of the Albufera lake occurred due to the collapse of approximately 30 kilometers of the coastal band between Valencia and Cullera. The Albufera lake has an irregular outline, with an approximate diameter of six kilometers at its widest part. It is connected to the sea by means of canals or waterways which can be opened or closed by means of floodgates to modify the volume of water in the lake. There are six small islands in the lake: the "Mata del Fang", the "Mateta de Baix", the "Mata de la Barra", the "Mata de L'Antina", the "Mata de San Roc" and the "Mata del Rey". Remains of what can be considered to be the earliest settlers have also been discovered. With regard to the activities of the local inhabitants in this area, rice farming is particularly important, and is closely linked to the survival of the Albufera, owing to the pressure to reclaim more metres of the area for farming and increase the revenues from each harvest. 5

Valencia Fallas CUENCA VALENCIA ALBUFERA In the month of March, following preparations which will have gone for the whole year, Valencia is transformed for the celebration of the Fallas. For a few days, the streets are filled with gigantic figures, true works of art, which compete in ingenuity and creativity, and for which an epic end awaits: fire. Take part in this special fiesta and enjoy all the emotions it entails. As the Spring arrives, so does the most eagerly awaited moment for the inhabitants of Valencia: the Fallas This is Valencia's big feast, prepared over the previous year with hard work and dedication. It takes place in the week of 19th March. During this time, the streets are filled with fun, imagination and spectacle in an impressive exhibition of art and colour which will leave you speechless. We can only recommend one thing: experience it for yourself. NOU RACÓ 7

The City of Arts and Sciences CUENCA VALENCIA ALBUFERA Examine a shark's mouth just centimeters from its teeth; discover the planets and a star shower through riddles and poems; see the Earth from the air or get inside the structure of DNA. These are just a few of the things you can do at the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, one of the city's emblematic new symbols. The City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, avant-garde work of architects Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, is a large complex dedicated to providing scientific and cultural information. This special complex has various areas, each dedicated to its own speciality. Once you have passed l'umbracle, an enormous green area with thousands of plants and trees, its interior decorated with sculptures by contemporary artists, you enter a spectacular building with hanging platforms and a huge glass wall. This is the Prince Felipe Science Museum, offering a new and completely original museum concept: it is forbidden not to touch. The idea is to make visitors experiment with science and new technologies. In the complex you will also find the L'Espai dels Xiquets. Close to this unique museum is l'hemisfèric, an original building in the form of a huge human eye, where you can enjoy the latest projections, in the planetarium, the Imax cinema and the "Laserium". Multimedia shows, 3D films, laser shows, star projections and hundreds of animations. An astronomer explains the mysteries of the universe and the sky, who make use of poems and games to learn to look to the firmament and recognize the planets and constellations. NOU RACÓ 10

11

The City of Arts and Sciences CUENCA VALENCIA ALBUFERA At the other end of the City of Arts and Sciences there is an unusual place that makes an impression on all its visitors: l'oceanogràfic, Europe's largest marine center, a scientific reference at world level. This gigantic aquarium is home to 45,000 examples of 500 species from around the world. Diving down into this artificial ocean of glass and tunnels is a unique experience. There are many things to do in this huge aquatic area: exhibitions with dolphins, seals and sea lions, tropical forests with unusual flora and fauna, the chance to discover the sounds of the sea, surround yourself with sharks and rays, or walk with penguins. The City of Arts and Sciences completes its cultural content with the Palau de les Arts, which hosts the best in theatre, opera, music and dance. This Palace of Arts also has an educational programme whose aim is to encourage appreciation of music from very early ages. NOU RACÓ 12
