The Great American Eclipse Tour 2017 14-24 August 2017 From 2,275 per person Join us on this wonderful tour of the beautiful West Coast of the United States where we will view the Total Solar Eclipse of 21 August 2017 from our location in Oregon where weather prospects are at their best to hopefully allow for a clear view of this phenomenal natural wonder. Your fantastic 10 night tour will take in Oregon s stunning coastline and natural wildlife, the giant Redwoods of California, spectacular Crater Lake, the charming town of Ashland, lively Portland and a wine tasting session in a local winery. You will also be able to enjoy the benefit of a series of astronomy talks from our expert lecturers Dr Marek Kukula (Public Astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich) and Dr Ed Gillen of Cambridge University

Total Solar Eclipse You will witness the total solar eclipse of 21 August 2017 from a carefully selected location north of Bend, Oregon (where you will stay prior to the eclipse) along the centre path where we should enjoy 2 mins of totality. Oregon itself offers some of the best weather prospects anywhere along the entire eclipse path. Itinerary 14 August: Arrive Portland (Oregon) Upon arrival in Portland, you will be met at Portland Airport by our Guide and private coach and will be transferred to your hotel. (N.B. We then move on to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum where one of the highlights is the original Spruce Goose built entirely of wood due to wartime restrictions. Other displays range from the elegant aeronautic designs of Orville and Wilbur Wright to a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird that can fly at speeds of over 2,000 miles per hour. We ll then drive along the rugged cliffs and shoreline of the Oregon Coast for some spectacular scenery and photo opportunities. You will stay 2 nights in Newport at the Shilo Inn Hotel. 17 August: Newport Today visit the Newport Aquarium where you can immerse yourself in the mysteries of the ocean. A world-class educational attraction nestled on beautiful Yaquina Bay, the aquarium is surrounded by an established woodland and estuary where many of the species exhibited within the aquarium flourish in their native habitat. We then visit Newport Old Town and Marina where you have free time for lunch and shopping. After lunch visit Yaquina Head and Lighthouse.. We then return to our hotel (or there is an optional drop off at Nye Beach Village to explore, dine and then walk back our hotel (a 15 min walk). 18 August: Newport-Brookings Today we visit the Sea Lion Caves - America's largest sea cave and home of the beautiful Steller Sea lions. This marine reserve has helped to protect the local marine animals and marine environment and you can observe the sea lions in the cave and on the rocky ledges of the coast. After lunch, we will set off for an adventure unlike no

other as we take a dune buggy ride on the moonlike Oregon Dunes which extend for 40 miles along the Oregon Coast. For the remainder of the afternoon we will head south on Highway 101 winding on and off the coastline with a rest stop at the charming town of Bandon (home of Ocean Spray Cranberries). Marek is also a judge on the Insight Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition and is the author of The Intimate Universe and the co-author of The Scientific Secrets of Doctor Who, both published in 2015. Dr Edward Gillen Ed is an astronomer at the University of Cambridge whose research focuses on discovering new planets and binary stars in our Galaxy. Of particular interest to him is how stars, and the planets that orbit them, form and evolve throughout their lifetimes. One aspect of his research is the study of eclipses and so he is very excited by the prospect of witnessing another solar eclipse! He obtained his PhD on young stars from the University of Oxford and has previously worked on black holes and comets at the University of Durham.
