DAY 01 PUNTA ARENAS Arrival into Punta Arenas. Reception at the airport and transfer to Hotel José Nogueira. Rest of the day at leisure. Dinner and overnight at Hotel José Nogueira. DAY 02 PUNTA ARENAS / PUERTO WILLIAMS At the agreed time transfer to the airport and assistance to board flight to Puerto Williams. During the trip we will enjoy an awe-inspiring birds-eye view of the landscape and the beautiful glaciers found in Cordillera Darwin, small southern channels and beautifully-coloured lagoons. Arrive at Puerto Williams. Reception at the aerodrome and transfer to LAKUTAIA LODGE where the whole group will be received with an aperitif. Accommodation in your room. Lunch at LAKUTAIA LODGE. An afternoon visit to the OMORA Ethno-Botanical Park is scheduled. This excursion will allow you to discover the beauty of the Bosques en Miniatura del Archipielago del Cabo de Hornos (Miniature Forests of the Cape Horn Archipelagos) via an experience called Turismo con Lupa (Magnifying Glass Tourism) along with educational work carried out by Fundacion Omora. This is a bio cultural conservation initiative that is applied in those communities of people that live in the last existing sub-antarctic forests and in which the Yagan peoples residing in Puerto Williams actively participate. Return to the Lodge. Dinner and overnight.
DAY 03 CHARLES DARWIN ROUTE Breakfast at the Lodge. Sailing to Wulaia Bay it is very appealing not only because of its wonderful landscapes but also because represents one of the most important historical moments of modern science: Young Darwin meets with the local communities, the cultural end of human evolution according to his own words. Wulaia is of extraordinary beauty, considered the historical capital city of Tierra del Fuego. It is the place where Commander Fitz-Roy and Young naturalist Charles Darwin returned with the 3 indigenous knowned as Jemmy Button, Fuegia Basket and York Minster, after an educative trip to England. It is the same place where many years after, Button and his people massacred a large number of English missionares. By the end of XIX century, Peace returned to Wulaia with the settlement of estancias (cattle ranch), and a radio station which remains can be visited. We will have the possibility to enjoy a nice view of the Beagle Channel and Ushuaia, the picturesque and narrow Murray Channel which divide Hoste Island and Navarino as well as Button Island coastal beaches. We will sail the same trail done 200 years before. If we are lucky enough we will have the chance to see a wide number of pelagic birds, seal colonies, dolphins and penguins. DAY 04 PUERTO WILLIAMS You can choose among different excursions we have to provide: 1. HIKE TO CERRO BANDERA VIEWPOINT 10-min ride to the beginning of the trail (back & forth). 1:15 hr non-stop hike. Details: 45-min climbing (200 m slope), 40-min same track descent. The 300-mt high viewpoint offers beautiful sights of Beagle Channel and Puerto Williams. 2. HIKE PUNTA GUSANO BEACH - BIRDWACHING 5-min ride to the beginning of the trail (back & forth). 2 or 3:30 hr non-stop hike depending on guests interest. Level of difficulty: easy hike on the beach. On the 3-hr hike there is a 50 mts big rocks climbing. Details: Nesting and breeding season run from mid-november until beginning of March. 5. HORSEBACK RIDING HALF DAY Level of difficulty: easy, no expertise required. Riding ancient trails in the forest, we will surround the Beagle Channel coastal end to reach a hill with a wide panoramic view over the channel and mountains. While riding enjoy birdwatching in the flatland. We invite our guests to enjoy the surroundings on your own, and engaged yourselves on mini-hikes around the forest, practice golf swings in our 3-hole mini golf course, mountain bike rides, or kayaking Lauta Sound to Micalvi Marina, dock for embarkations looking for adventures to/from Antartic peninsula or Cape Horn. Lakutaia Lodge provides of trekking poles. Lunch at the lodge on half-day excursions, and box lunch on full-day excursions. Dinner and Accommodation at Lakutaia Lodge The trail surrounding the peninsula offers exclusive views of Puerto Williams and Beagle Channel. The upnorth end of the peninsula is the nesting area of thousand Dominican & Austral seagull, Pilpilen and many goose species. Adding 1:30 hr to the hike permits to surround the peninsula by the beach and enlarge the pleasure to enjoy sea and strong winds, as usual! 3. HIKE TO CERRO BANDERA HALF DAY 10-min ride to the beginning of the trail (back & forth). 2:45 hr non-stop hike. Details: 1:30 hrs climbing (500 m slope), 1:15 hrs same track descent. The 600-mt high viewpoint offers beautiful sights of Beagle Channel, Puerto Williams and Ushuaia. Adding 20 min to the hike from the summit, will let us enjoy a spectacular view over Róbalo valley and Dientes de Navarino massif. 4. HIKE TO CERRO BANDERA FULL DAY 15-min ride to the beginning of the trail (back & forth). 7-hr non-stop hike. Details: 2:30 hr hike through Ukika valley on mild slope. Continue a 2-hr sharp climbing (500 mts slope) on forest slopes through a wild track to reach Cerro Bandera (600 mts high). Box lunch. Descent will take 1:30 hrs on a 450-mt slope, and continue 1-hr trail back to the lodge. Level of dificulty: Strenuous in forest field. Important slope along the trail, when raining some portions get muddy. Special equipment: trekking-waterproof boots required. Box lunch, hot & cold beverages included. The first portion of the trail is a primary-majestic forest, crossing the peak bogs we will witness the fascinating work of beavers over Ukika river. Keep on climbing the sharp forest, we will see a great extention of Ukika valley. Finally, climbing Cerro Bandera summit through rocky ground, we will appreciate wonderful panomaric views of Ukika & Róbalo valleys, a large extention of Beagle Channel, Ushuaia and Puerto Williams.
DAY 05 OVERFLIGHT TO CAPE HORN Transfer to the airfield to start Cape Horn overflight, one of the most important activities LAKUTAIA LODGE offers to guests. During the overflight, you will stumble upon Dientes de Navarino massif and its peak bogs before overflying the Nassau bay and the magnificent Wollaston island. Finally, the Horn Island will appear when flying down to the southern tip to admire the legendary Cape Horn, a 400-mt-high crag facing the worst and heavy swells from Drake Sea. At this point, we are 500 km over the Antartic peninsula. We will fly the Horn Island northeast tip where the lighthouse is located, the guardian house and his family dwelling, as well as the famous Cape Horn monument, representing a huge Albatros silhouette: southern wind icon and courageous sailors eternal companion (1 to 1:15 hrs overflight) Return to Puerto Williams and transfer to the LAKUTAIA LODGE where an appetizer will be waiting for you. Lunch at the Lodge. In the afternoon, we will visit the city of Puerto Williams, the southern-most city in the world and named after Juan Williams, founder Fuerte Bulnes. The city of Puerto Williams is the main city on Isla Navarino and it is located on the tip of the American continent facing the southern coast of Tierra del Fuego and north of Cape Horn. It currently has a population of 2.500 inhabitants. We will walk around the city streets and we will visit the Martin Gusinde Museum which covers the history of the Yagan people and has graphic displays of the sector s natural resources. Gusinde was a world-famous anthropologist and priest from the Order of the Divine Word who worked with the Yagan and Onas ethnicities from 1918 to 1923. Return to the lodge. Rest of the day at leisure. Dinner and overnight.
