TRAP Tails Trail Rider Awards Program California State Horsemen s Assoc. Today is the first day of SUMMER! I m so ready, got the truck and trailer serviced, and headlights fixed, Pearl (my truck) had an eye out, sort of like Buddy :) Mid-May my friends and I attended the Twain Harte Horsemen s weekend ride at Mother Lode Ranch near Sonora. What a beautiful place! We had a great time and it was extra special because we did not have to cook or clean up or anything, just relax! More on this trip inside! I just got back from a weekend at Lake Del Valle in Livermore and I am hitting the road on Wednesday for a week at Skillman with my local club, friends and family. From there (since I m already half way there) I m heading north to Weaverville to participate in the CSHA State Fund Raiser Trail Event being organized by Audra Homicz the CSHA State Endurance Chair. I ve never been to the Weaver Basin in the Trinity Alps Wilderness so am excited to be riding some new trails with folks that I ve met at CSHA functions. Saturday and Sunday (7/6 & 7/7) are poker rides and Sunday also a 25 mile Endurance fun ride. Don t think I ll be doing that but the poker rides and some wandering around rides for sure! Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Trinity County Resource Conservation Dist. for a new campground in Weaverville, the AERC Trail Fund, and the CSHA State Royalty Scholarships. So I will not only be having fun but helping several good programs. Chair Chatter! I have several other trips planned this summer so don t be surprised if you see me going down the road. Just look for the Redneck Hilton on the side of my trailer! I hope I bump into you out there! Have a fun summer and ride safe! Page 3 Cuyamaca Rancho State Park May s Campout Contributed by Bill Naylor, Region 12 The Fullerton Recreational Riders have a horse campout once a month except for December when we get together to have an end of the year potluck and reminisce. In May we went to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park about 45 miles east of San Diego. The park offers camping, riding and hiking in an oak woodland forest with a sprinkling of pines, oaks, and lovely meadows with creeks. There are over 100 miles of trails and two equestrian camps (Los Vaqueros Group Camp and Green Valley Horse Camp). Green Valley has about 15 horse campsites and reservations are strongly advised. The elevation of the park ranges from about 3,000 to 5,000 feet. This year our group reserved seven sites with the first of us (those that could get away early from work) getting there Thursday about 2:00 PM after about a three hour trailer ride. Once the campsite was set up we did a one and a half hour shake out ride to loosen up the horses then came back and headed to Descanso, just outside of the park, for dinner at a local café Bonnie Slager suggested. When we got back Donna Wyman and Marylyn Shubin had arrived. Marylyn had had problems in loading her horse but she did not give up and three hours late she made it. We ended up calling it an early night after the long drive, ride, and dinner. The next morning after Randy Miller arrived, not wanting to miss any work, we packed some snacks and went for a ride on the Eastside Trail. We split the group in two, those that wanted a 3 hour ride and those that wanted a 5 hour ride. We rode through some beautiful country. I was amazed how the park had come back after about 90% of the park had burned in 2003. As I led the shorter ride back to camp and several of the folks wanted to go into Julian to pick up pies and I needed a little diesel fuel I took them in. We stopped at the local soda bar and had a chocolate soda (thanks Ron & Karen Gideon) and even went by the local feed store. David Osborn had to work so he finally made it through the Friday afternoon traffic. That evening we decided that we had such a good time at dinner the night before we did it again. Afterward we all sat around the campfire until we turned in. We packed a lunch on Saturday morning and headed out for Dyar Springs for a lunch ride. The park had put in a hand pump to water the horses at the springs. You can camp out at the spring but you must hike or ride in. We found a Boy Scout group had done just that. We got back to camp about 3:00 and after taking care of our horses we showered and made our way to the campfire to socialize then we enjoyed a great potluck dinner and more socializing. As usual, Ralph Scheffers was the hit of the party and Susan Spicer s dogs were great company.

Page 4 Sunday morning we did a short ride out to the Arroyo Seco Primitive Camp where more hikers had spent the night. We returned to camp and packed up for the trailer ride back home. Of course there is always one horse that does not want to go home and this time it was Marylyn s but after 30 minutes of trailer loading 101 he got in. I did find out the next day that everyone had made it home. Ron and Karen had a flat tire on their horse trailer on the way home but other than a short delay everything was fine. We are now putting the final touches on the June Imperial Beach and July Wild Horse campouts. I would like to thank Bonnie Slager, FRR member and Cuyamaca MAU member for leading this weekend s rides. Those that joined us in May were Bonnie and her friend Maureen, Randy, Ron & Karen, Susan, Ralph, Donna, Marylyn, David, Sharon & Bill. We even were joined on several of the rides by Judy and Martha, possible new members we met at the camp. Thanks again Sharon for driving our rig so I could drive Ralph s so he could continue to join us on the campout. Bill Naylor, Fullerton Recreational Riders Trail Coordinator. Thank you to Bill for his entertaining and informative article! Sounds like a great place to ride in Southern California!

Page 5 Twain Harte Horsemen s Weekend Ride Mother Lode Ranch May 17th my friends and fellow TRAP members, Beverly Hayes and Yousseff and Lauri Abed headed out to the Mother Lode Ranch near Sonora for a ride sponsored by Twain Harte Horsemen s Assoc. This was our first camping trip of the year and we were looking forward to it because we did not have to do any cooking or cleaning! It was also the first camping trip for Lauri and Yousseff with their new horses so this was kind of a maiden voyage for them. We arrived Friday around 2:00 and set up camp next to the creek in the meadow under the shade trees. There are no pens but you had the option of high-lining or bringing your own portable pens. We did a combination of both. Lauri and Youseff s horses were high-lined and had obviously done it before and settled right in After setting up camp and getting the lay of the land, we took a short ride before dinner. What a beautiful place! You have your choice of trails from wagon roads that the ranch owner Don Rumsey developed for his wagons or single track horse trails meandering through the rocks and brush. Both Bev and Yousseff have gaited horses and LOVED the wagon roads as they were able to gait to their hearts content! Upon returning to camp, we cleaned up and headed over to the stage stop for dinner were we enjoyed a great bowl of chili and salad and cornbread. Of course we had brought some wine and had a toast to the beginning of a fantastic weekend! Following dinner we all sat around the campfire and enjoyed the company of other riders. Saturday started with a hearty pancake breakfast with all the fixing and of course coffee! Again, no dishes! Don came down from the ranch house and volunteered to lead a ride through horse trails for those that wanted to take a more adventurous route. So approximately 20 riders saddled up and we headed out climbing up and down the hills through the rocks and trees. At one point at the beginning of the ride Yousseff s horse decided to just sit down on the rocks. After a little encouragement he decided it was easier to just climb the rocks as asked, no problems after that! Bev, Yousseff, Marie (in pink) and Lauri Toasting the weekend!

Page 6 After our ride we kicked back at the trailers, relaxed in the shade and visited with our fellow campers while waiting for the lunch bell! Do you see a theme here? Ride, eat, ride, eat :) After lunch, and cleaning up camp a bit, we saddled back up and headed out again on the wagon trails for a very pleasant ride. After returning from the ride, Don stopped by and asked if we wanted to take a tour of his wagon sheds. These are two buildings that are probably the size of a hanger and were where he stored his many wagons, buggies, a hearse, carts, stage coach, etc. All in immaculate condition! Outside under a cover were 4-5 covered wagons! A very interesting tour! We retuned to the stage stop for dinner of barbecue and so many side dishes it was hard to pick what to eat so we just ate everything (we had been riding all day!) The day finished up with another pleasant evening around the campfire. Sunday began with a continental breakfast. Some folks were packing up to depart but Don had came to breakfast and asked Yousseff if he would mind helping him hitch up his draft horses to a wagon and we could all go for a ride. Of course Yousseff jumped at the chance! What a treat, Don took us on a 1 1/2 hour wagon ride throughout the ranch! What a gracious host! We will definitely be going back! Marie and Buddy Bev and Cruzer Lauri and Jack Yousseff and Blue

Page 8 Camping Recipes! Chicken Enchilada Pie Required: 12-inch dutch oven Ingredients: 3 12oz. cans of white chicken meat 1 onion 1 cup water 9 11-inch flour tortillas 2 tsp Seasoned salt 1 10oz. can tomato soup 2 10oz. cans of enchilada sauce 1 lb shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese 1 lb frozen or canned corn 1/2 small can sliced or crumbled black olives extras: green onions, tomatoes, olives, sour cream, whatever sounds good Directions: Place chicken and liquid from cans into Dutch oven. Break up chicken with a fork. Add salt, condensed soup, enchilada sauce, corn, olives, onions and water to make a sauce. Simmer and stir over bed of coals for 10 minutes to heat thoroughly. Remove about 3/4 of the sauce into bowl or pot, leaving a layer in the dutch oven. Sprinkle a layer of cheese over mixture remaining in dutch oven. Lay two tortillas on cheese. Add sauce, cheese and tortillas in three layers : ending with sauce and cheese. Put lid on dutch oven and cook on low heat for 30 minutes, with about 6 briquettes worth of heat under and 14 on lid. Serves 8 to 10 This sounds good and easy since most of the ingredients are canned. You could substitute the canned chicken for frozen chicken filets that you cook yourself before putting in the enchilada pie.
