Anchises was a member of a royal Trojan family, specifically, e second cousin to King Priam of Troy. Anchises met Aphrodite while tending to his sheep on Mt. Ida, which is also e birplace of Aeneas. A Homeric hymn recites at Aeneas was raised by e nymphs of Mt. Ida and did not interact wi his faer, Anchises, until he was five years old. Aeneas did not contribute on e Trojan War until Achilles atop Mt. Ida attacked him. Achilles had taken his sheep, and roused his Dardanians e fight against e Greeks in e Trojan War. After e fall of Troy, Aeneas ought he was fated to establish his city in Thrace. In Thrace, he discovers e dying son of Priam, Polydorus, and learns at he must build his city elsewhere. Before leaving Thrace, Aeneas and his men give Polydorus a proper burial. Aeneas and his men en sail to Delos where Apollo tells Aeneas to sail to e land of his ancestors. Aeneas makes a false interpretation of is and decides to sail to Crete because one of his ancestors, Teucrus, ruled over e Teucrians. Aeneas en sails to Crete in pursuit of building his city. Filandro- Restino 2 and specify at e ancestors Apollo was referring to were at of Dardanus. This leads Aeneas to e land of e Dardanians: Italy. Aeneas once again sets sail and lands on e Strophades Islands, also known as e island of e Harpies. The Harpies attack Aeneas and his Trojan men after killing many cows and goats among e island for a feast. The eldest Harpy, Celaeno, tells Aeneas a prophecy at confirms his future city will be in Italy, but not before he and his men will be forced to eat eir tables after a great famine. In an attempt to reach Italy, e Trojans land in Chaonia, e norwestern region of Eperius. There, Aeneas meets Andromache who recalls her and Helenus s capture in Troy to eir reign over e city. Andromache and Helenus advise Aeneas to take e long route to Sicily to avoid e sea monster Scylla and e deadly whirlpool Charybdis. Aeneas follows Andromache s advice and lands along e beaches of Sicily as Mt. Etna is erupting. Along e beach, he encounters a disturbed Greek soldier. He begs e Trojans to save him despite his Greek lineage and after Anchises spares him, he reveals his story. The soldier s name is Achaemenides (son of Admastus) and he was once under e auority of Ulysses. Achaemenides was abandoned by his comrades and was left to fend for himself against e Cyclopes living ere. Polyphemus, a blind Cyclops appears to e Trojans who flee e shore, taking Achaemenides. The Tojans sail and land on Drepanum, where Anchises dies. Aeneas and his men wash up on e shores of Carage and are welcomed by e queen, Dido. Wi e aid of Cupid, who is Aeneas s half broer, Dido falls in love wi Aeneas and gets married in a cave. Apollo does not support is marriage, and he reminds

Aeneas and his men return to Sicily, specifically on e port of Eryx. Aeneas s good friend Acestes welcomes e Trojans, ruler of e area. In Sicily, Aeneas hosts games for e one-year anniversary of his faer s dea. After e games, Aeneas ponders if he should build his city in Sicily. His fellow friend and seer, Nautes, confirms at Aeneas should stay in Sicily, but warns him at he will meet a foe in Latium. Spirits tells Aeneas at he must first go to e Underworld to meet his faer. Aeneas next ventures to Cumae where e Cumaean Sibyl guides Aeneas to e Underworld. The Sibyl demands a sign at Aeneas will return from e Underworld a golden branch from e woods. Aeneas finds one and returns to e Sibyl. He travels in e Underworld in search of his faer, Anchises. He encounters e silent Dido, Anchises, and oers. Aeneas en sails to Latium, located off e Tiber River, where he is welcomed by King Latinus. Many suitors constantly pursue Latinus s daughter, Lavinia, but one stands out against e rest, Turnus. King Latinus hears from an oracle at his daughter must wed a foreigner, not a Latin such as Turnus. While on e beach, Aeneas and his men fulfill e prophecy of e Harpies by eating e bread ey used as tables. Aeneas was grateful at e prophecy was fulfilled in a less dramatic situation. Battle breaks out in e area and after fighting for a while, Aeneas sails to Pallanteum. In Pallanteum, Aeneas meets e Arcadian king, Evander, who offers to help Aeneas in battle. Filandro- Restino 4 tells Vulcan to construct armor for Aeneas, and she gives it to Aeneas after Cyclopes carefully craft it. Turnus acknowledges e Trojans vulnerability and attacks e men. Turnus kills many Trojans and burns many of e Trojan ships. Aeneas starts to take e upper hand after he hears at Turnus killed Pallas. Turnus is lured away from battle by e gods and Mezenius takes over in his absence. Aeneas kills Mezenius, which marks e Trojan victory. Turnus returns and decides to duel Aeneas for Lavinia s hand in marriage. Aeneas stabs Turnus in e leg and considers sparing his life until he sees e belt of Pallas. Aeneas en kills Turnus and marries Latius s daughter, Lavinia. II. Aeneas: Son of Anchises and Venus. Defends e Trojans during e Trojan War. Juno: Goddess married to Neptune. Aeolus: Helps Juno by sending a storm to e Trojans Apollo: Provides Aeneas wi a prophecy. Mercury: Messenger God who convinces Aeneas to leave Dido. Neptune: God of e sea, who puts an end to e storm instigated by Juno.

Sibyl of Cumae: Oracle who guides Aeneas to e Underworld. She is a priestess of Apollo. Latinus: Faer in law of Aeneas and King of Latium. Amata: Wife of Latinus. Enchanted to hate Aeneas by Juno. Lavinia: Fated to marry Aeneas and is e daughter of Latinus and Amata. Polydurus: Son of Priam who kicked Aeneas out of Thrace in e form of a tree. Aeneas gives him a proper burial. Turnus: The King of Latins who wished to wed Lavinia, Aeneas s future wife. Aeneas kills him in a duel. III. Troy: Home of Aeneas Antandros/ Mt. Ida-Aeneas led e survivors from Troy to Antandros per request of e gods to establish a new Troy. Aenos: City Aeneas first attempted to establish on e shores of Thrace until he was told to leave immediately by Polydurus. Delos: Land of e oracle to Apollo who Aeneas went to seek help from. Pergameum/ Crete: Where e oracle directed Aeneas to establish e new city because it was believed it was e land of his ancestors.

Carage: A storm caused by Hera caused Aeneas to land in Carage where Dido fell in love wi Aeneas and en killed herself when he left. Eryx: Port at Drepanum where Aeneas hold his faer s funeral. Cumae: Where Aeneas went to meet wi e Sibyl at Apollo s Temple and was granted passage to e Underworld. Underworld: Aeneas is guided to e underworld and is able to communicate wi his faer.
