ETHIOPIA FIERA INTERNAZIONALE ACITF 2016 DI ADDIS ABEBA 3

ETHIOPIA EARNS OVER USD 79 MILLION FROM MINERALS IN QUARTER YEAR The Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Natural Gas said Ethiopia has secured USD 79.3 million from mineral in the first quarter of the fiscal year. (08.12.2015 2Merkato) Bacha Faji, Public Relations Director at the Ministry told Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) that when compared to the same period last fiscal year, this year s revenue exceeded by USD 13 million. Ethiopia earned the stated amount from gold, gemstone and tantalum, Bacha noted. Ethiopia produced 2,261 kg of gold in the quarter year, including 1,247 kg from artisanal miners. 4

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES TO BUY MORE FLIGHT SIMULATORS Ethiopian Airlines revealed plans to purchase new flight simulators for new fleet of aircraft to be introduced in the coming few years. (08.12.2015 2Merkato) Ethiopian is planning to have full flight simulators for A350XWB and Boeing B737 MAX aircraft which it will take deliveries in the coming few years, Mesfin Tasew, Chief Operating Officer, told The Reporter. The Airlines will be receiving 14 A350XWB aircraft in the coming year. The European consortium, Airbus, will deliver the first two A350XWB in May/June 2016. It will also take delivery of the remaining 12 between 2017 and 2019. Ethiopian, additionally, has placed orders for 20 B737MAX narrow body jetliners from Boeing. Ethiopian has constructed new building for flight simulators. Currently, Ethiopian Airlines operates a fleet of 78 aircraft which it hopes to double by 2025. 5

ETHIOPIA, CHINA ADOPT MUTUAL VISA EXEMPTION AGREEMENT Ethiopia and China on Monday, December 07, 2015, have adopted a new mutual visa exemption agreement for diplomatic and service passport holders entering each other s borders, according to Xinhua. (08.12.2015 2Merkato) The Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia in a statement said: As of December 7, visas are no more required for diplomatic or service passport holders of China and Ethiopia. According to the agreement, citizens of China and Ethiopia holding valid diplomatic or service passport shall be exempted from visa requirement while entering, exiting or transit via the territory of each other for a period of stay not exceeding 30 days. La Yifan, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, said the agreement would help facilitate people-topeople exchanges and cooperation between Ethiopia and China. It was on May last year when Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang came to Ethiopia for an official visit that the two countries reached on consensus. Following the signing of the agreement, the legislative bodies of the respective countries launched the procedure to endorse it before it came into effect. 6

FOREIGN COMPANY ACQUIRED ETHIOPIAN BOTTLING PLANT Atlas Dev & Support Services Ltd said it has completed its acquisition of East Africa Packaging Holdings Limited ( EAPH ). (08.12.2015 2Merkato) In a statement it has released on Friday, December 4, 2015, Atlas said this acquisition follows the Company s recent establishment of new glass bottle manufacturing facility situated 45 kilometers north of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Carl Esprey, CEO of Atlas, said: The Chancho Project is currently in feasibility stage and will provide Atlas with access to the rapidly growing Ethiopian consumer market. He also noted that, This acquisition will result in high quality, locally produced glass bottles being available to the growing Ethiopian beer and beverage industries. According to Atlas, Ethiopia has been attracting significant investment from international beverage companies. The beer production, for example has been growing at a compound annual growth rate of 14.3 percent in the past 14 years, Atlas s statement indicates. 7

The Bank has an asset base of USD six billion as of September 2015. 8

ETHIOPIA RAIL SYSTEM REFLECTS GROWING TIES WITH CHINA Taxis and buses were once the only way to get across this teeming, ancient city of 4 million residents. But recently a light rail system provided by a new financial angel China is transforming how Ethiopians commute. (04.12.2015 W IC) This is a new Ethiopia, said Mahlet Adem, who owns a jewelry shop at the Shiro Meda textile market in Addis Ababa. The economy of this country has grown following the completion of two rail lines. Moving goods from one place to another is nowadays very easy. Ethiopia is only the second sub-saharan country after South Africa to lay down an electrified rail network. The $475 million joint venture between Ethiopia and China opened in September. Slated for completion in 2019, the planned 22-mile-long system will carry 60,000 passengers per hour to 49 cities and towns across the capital region. At 27 cents per ride, the light rail is already spurring growth. A taxi ride across town costs around $2.50. Bus rides are 90 cents. Stations have become hubs for commerce. It s really very great that the cost of transportation has gone down, said Mr. Adem. There s also more business space in the city due to increased infrastructure. This country is moving fast. The rail system is a highprofile example of Chinese investment that has been crucial to Ethiopia s annual growth of around 10 percent in the past decade. China and its companies have invested almost $900 million in Ethiopia over the past five years, according to the Ethiopian Investment Agency. Trade between the two countries is around $1.3 billion a year. You cannot compare the current Ethiopia to the one you saw 20 years ago, said Getachew Betru, chief executive of the Ethiopian Railways Corporation. Everything has changed from the transport sector to other infrastructure. And Ethiopia isn t alone Chinese President Xi Jinping this week traveled directly from the Paris climate summit for a visit to Zimbabwe and South Africa, a trip resulting in billions of dollars in new deals and multiple meetings with African leaders who traveled to meet with Mr. Xi. But the new relationship is proving to be double-edged: As the Chinese economy has slumped this year and demand for resources in the world s most-populous country slackens, Ethiopian growth is forecast to decline to 7.5 percent in the next few years, according to the International Monetary Fund. The IMF also recently noted that Ethiopia could benefit, however, as Chinese consumers import more goods like Ethiopian coffee and leather. Ethiopia is still desperately poor. More than 80 percent of the population currently lives in rural areas and relies on subsistence farming, according to the U.S. Agency for International Development. (washingtontimes) 9

SOUTH SUDAN KHARTOUM-JUBA SECURITY TALKS POSTPONED FOR THE THIRD TIME The third meeting of the joint Sudanese South Sudanese Joint Political and Security Committee (JPSC), scheduled to be held here on Wednesday, was postponed for internal Southern Sudanese security reasons. (08.12.2015 Sudan Tribune) South Sudanese ambassador to Khartoum Mayan Dot Waal on Tuesday announced for the third time the delay of a security meeting to discuss the operationalization of a buffer zone on the border between the two countries and the deployment of UN supported joint monitoring patrols. Waal said the South Sudanese delegation headed by the defence minister was not able to travel to Khartoum due to security considerations in his country. However, he didn t elaborate on those reasons. He told the semi-official Sudanese Media Centre (SMC) that a new date will be fixed for the talks later on. In an extraordinary meeting in Addis Ababa held under the auspices of the African Union High-Level Implementation Panel(AUHP) last September, the JPSC agreed to reactivate the 10-mile wide safe demilitarized zone. The two countries had deployed troops on the border following the signing of the Cooperation Agreement on 27 September 2012. But Juba stopped the operation fearing that demilitarized zone which is established on disputed areas along the border may be used by Sudan to support its territorial claims. The deployment of the joint monitoring force however was seen crucial to support a successful implementation of a peace deal aiming to end the 21-month South Sudanese conflict. Sudan also urges Juba since several years to implement this agreement as it accuses the South Sudanese government of harbouring rebels from Darfur and the Two Areas. South Sudan broke away from Sudan in July, 2011, following a referendum held in January of that year. 10
