THE EVENT Kick up your heels and party like it s 1859 at Four Mile Historic Park s annual fundraising event and auction! The Four Mile Rendezvous will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2014. Guests will enjoy an evening filled with cocktails, heavy hors d'oeuvres, games of chance, live music, and a silent auction. The Burden of Spoof, a musical troupe of Denver-area judges and attorneys, will treat guests to one of their greatest hits, The Perils of Packer, a musical rendition of the 1883 trial of Colorado s notorious cannibal Alferd Packer. To cap off the evening we ll have an old fashioned marshmallow roast over the campfire. The auction will showcase local businesses, artists, and organizations to the 250 attending guests while raising funds for historic preservation maintenance on the Four Mile House Museum, underprivileged youth to attend Four Mile Historic Park s many programs throughout the year, and to provide the community with interactive experiences year-round. THE NEED We invite you to support the need for interactive and engaging cultural programming within our community. Our goal is to provide you with an enjoyable evening of learning and an opportunity to enhance our community s appreciation of Colorado s rich heritage through Four Mile Historic Park s year-round programs. All proceeds from the Four Mile Rendezvous will benefit Four Mile Historic Park, site of Denver s oldest standing structure, the Four Mile House. The Four Mile House was originally a stagecoach stop and tavern and later a farm. Today, this 12-acre park, and Denver Landmark, serves to educate the public (over 40,000 annual visitors) about Colorado s rich heritage, which includes over 13,000 school children each year through community events, schools programming (on and off site), and public access to the Four Mile House Museum and Park. The mission of Four Mile Historic Park is to teach and preserve Colorado s heritage and pioneer spirit.
THE ORGANIZATION In 1859, four miles from Denver City along the Cherokee Trail, the Four Mile House was built as a homestead on 160 acres of land which eventually grew into a prosperous 600+ acre farm. The Four Mile House is now documented as the oldest standing structure in the City and County of Denver. In the 1960s, community members saw an opportunity for a unique educational setting in the 12 acres of remaining land that surrounded the Four Mile House. However, the structure, surrounding outbuildings, and land were in severe need of restoration to transform the property into an interpretive vehicle for students and visitors. The organization, Four Mile Historic Park (FMHP), was founded and established as a 510(c)(3) organization in 1977. That same year, efforts to accomplish the restoration began and lasted for one year. In 1978, Four Mile Historic Park was dedicated to the citizens of Denver as a public park and museum to preserve and interpret the western rural heritage and environment of Colorado to educate a diverse public. The vision for the organization continues to be to preserve, interpret, and educate the community and visitors about the history of Colorado, United States western expansion, and the significant importance of this site. Interpretation and education services continue to be provided through docent led tours of the Four Mile House Museum, youth education programming, and Heritage events (four annually) provide the community with opportunities to connect with Colorado s past through a variety of hands-on activities and special demonstrations. Today, the grounds, house and outbuildings continue to provide a medium for a journey into the past, where over 40,000 annual visitors can directly experience what it was like to travel to and live in the new frontier in the late 1800s.
