Palm Coast Yacht Club Volume XXXII, Number 1 January 2010 Fleet Activities At the November Captains meeting, we worked on a 2010 boating calendar. One thing to keep in mind is always be flexible. We note that our first big trip had to be moved back several days (well weeks actually) because of conflicts. Many boaters expressed interest. The new year starts with a captains meeting January 5 th at 4:30 p.m. In keeping with past practice, captain meetings will be the first Tuesday of every month unless a trip is scheduled. Our first big trip will depart Valentines Day, Sunday, February 14 th for Stuart, Lake Okeechobee, Sanibel Island, Marco Island, Key West, Miami, and back home. This is a long trip and it is planned at three weeks if the weather stays good. We are moving every day except for three nights in Key West. Not on the calendar is a trip of a lifetime. P/C John and Mary Slattery have decided to do The Loop AGAIN! For some reason their 6,000 mile trip in 2004 missed some spots so they are going back to hit those they missed. They think Ottawa and the Rideau Canal and its 42 locks are worthwhile. Being Rear Commodore for so long, I feel I should start this column with an announcement of a party. With a very intelligent, hard working Board of Governors along side me, we will do our very best to make this year a success. Quite a few of the Board members have been on board before, so they have a good background on what is go ing on. This is Bruce Douglas second time around as Fleet Captain. Linda Cohen, Frank Hutchinson, Carolyn Calloway, Dell Trayer, Dick Kelley, Bob Uhl and Jim McIntyre are all experienced BOG members. My first Board of Governors meeting I will invite all the Past Commodore s to attend. I look for their input and experience to guide me through this year. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated and looked at very seriously. I believe we can all agree that MEMBERSHIP is crucial. Jason Johnson will be Membership Chair and he can use all the help he can get. I appreciate the trust you have placed in me and I will work very hard to make this year an extremely successful one. I look forward to seeing you all at the Change of Watch on January 9, 2010. Birthday Boys Ann Vorndran, Commodore Celebrating their December birthdays are (l to r) Jason Johnson, P/C Cliff Lewis, Rene Baylon, Karl Zipf, John Anderson, P/C Ray Thompson and Tom Trayer.
3 Vice Commodore s Report We are putting together the facility plans for 2010. Now is the time to get your desires for facility upgrades or repairs considered for the budget. I need to match people's wishes to the expected money availability. We are not the U.S. government and cannot print stimulus money. All we have to offer are hugs, kisses, handshakes and smiles for our volunteers. We are formulating three categories of projects: (1) Work day projects that are held on one Monday a month with work done by volunteers, (2) Capital projects to be completed by outside contractors, and (3) A list of projects to be completed during the one week shutdown of the Club in July. Projects in the third category will be completed by contractors and volunteers. We have the best looking club in Palm Coast thanks to all our members' efforts in the past. We need your continued support in 2010. Hope everyone has a great 2010. Bob Bescher, Vice Commodore Fleet Activities (Continued from page 1) TAIN. If you are interested and your boat can go under a fixed railroad bridge on the Illinois River at 19 4 and you have about six or seven months with nothing scheduled and about $15,000 boating dollars, contact John. Departure date is around the middle of April. Happy Sailing! Bruce Douglas, Due date for Contributions & Articles for the next issue of The Pilot is the 18th of the month.

Carolyn Calloway, Rear Commodore On the Rocks (impending crack-up) Early navigational charts depict rocks as the symbol of danger and destruction. The colloquial expression is an illusion to danger. Modern usage is usually applied to a marriage with no future.

8 Santa s Girls Ever wonder why we never have a problem recruiting someone to play Santa Claus at the Holiday Party every year. Word has it that there is a ten year wait. This year it was Bob Bescher s turn as he welcomed (l to r) Luisa Kennedy, Elaine MacDonald, Elise Johnson and Shari Hildebrandt. Production Team Moves On This issue ends our involvement with production of THE PILOT. We first got involved in 2002 in moving from a cut and paste format to electronic publishing. The first electronic edition was published in October, 2003 and has evolved over the years to include more colorful flyers and more photos of both boating and social events. We have enjoyed our involvement and hope that other members will get some ink on their hands and help continue this publication. John & Mary Slattery Sunshine Best wishes go to Peter Moreno who had to have a pre-christmas hospital stay and Sincere regrets go to Luisa Kennedy on the death of her mother. Best Wishes for a Healthy New Year. Joanne Squires, Sunshine Editor A Renaissance Feast The Palm Coast High School Formality Singers provided the entertainment for the Renaissance Feast. Along with song and dance our members were treated to mead to get everyone in the spirit of the evening.
