Introduction Rivers, natural and artificial lakes of the Podlaskie Region offer excellent opportunities for water tourism and leisure in a picturesque setting. Dozen or so rivers (e.g. Czarna Hańcza, Biebrza, Bug) and Suwałki Augustów Lake District are water sport enthusiasts and anglers paradise. Augustów the summer capital of Poland attracts visitors by its rich offer of cruises, the picturesque Rospuda Valley and the Augustów Canal, kayaks, canoes, pedalos, jet ski hire, and a power driven water ski lifts which, no doubt, will please thrill seekers. The Augustów Canal enchants with the 19th century construction skills and unique landscapes of surrounding protected areas. A visa free canal cruise to Belarus can also include sightseeing in Grodno. The north of the region is a preferred destination for sailing enthusiasts. Lake Wigry, due to its size and diversified shoreline, is ranked among Poland s most attractive water bodies. Sailors are also attracted by the vast area of Lake Rajgród and the Kukle leisure centre with its unique round boat hire. A trip down the Narew, the Biebrza and the Bug Rivers is an excellent opportunity to combine active leisure and to become familiar with the region s cultural heritage and vibrant nature of the rivers and river banks. A well developed network of equipment rental helps to organize kayaking, rafting, water tram and pychówka boat trips. Anglers will also find something to do in the region. The Siemianówka Reservoir and Lake Boksze are among their favourite spots. Good restaurants serving fish dishes surround the numerous lakes around the Augustów and Rajgrod. While there you should taste such specialties as smoked vendace or fried perch pike.

Down the canal Whether in a stylish wooden gondola, a catamaran, a passenger ship or kayak a trip down the Augustów Canal is an unforgettable experience. In the Augustów Forest greenery, passing historical sluices, you can go as far as Grodno. It s time to explore all attractions of the Augustów Canal and to benefit from the visa free tourist movement to Belarus. The Augustów Canal is a water tourism trail set in a beautiful landscape, connecting Poland and Belarus. It is 103 km long. The level of its water is regulated by 18 sluices: 14 in Poland, 3 in Belarus, and one on the Polish Belarusian border (Kurzynie). The canal is a 19th century historic landmark. You can learn the history of its construction at the Museum of History of Augustów Canal, one of the branches of the Museum of the Augustów Region. Down the canal Przewięź, photo A. Trojanowska Mementoes, documents and photographs of the construction and exploitation of the Canal photos are collected in the historical 19th century house known as the Prądzyński manor (General. Ignacy Prądzyński was the chief designer of the Canal). The Museum of the Augustów Region also has an ethnographic exhibition, presenting among other things material culture of the villages around Augustów in the 19th and the 20th centuries. You can travel along the Augustów Canal in various ways. The offer of cruise and kayaking organisers and equipment hire, includes various boats, such as kayaks, gondolas, barges and catamarans. Many tourists choose a cruise by boat of Żegluga Augustowska, during which you can watch the mechanism of regulation of water levels by sluices and admire the charms of nature surrounding the canal when aboard. Some ships on the Papal Trail which runs along the Augustów Canal, stop at Studzieniczna, so as the tourists could visit the sanctuary which John Paul II visited on his pilgrimage to Poland in 1999. From the Żegluga Augustowska harbour you can go along the picturesque Rospuda valley, with the meandering river banks and unique natural peat bogs. The landscape of this area is protected. Local natural assets enchant the visitors and encourage photographers. There is also a catamaran harbour in Augustów. Exclusive ships take tourists to the most attractive places in the Augustów Lake District. You can also make a cross border trip in the Augustów Canal Park. The organisation of visa free cruises to Belarus has been simplified. Tourists no longer need to apply for a visa, just to take a passport and a pass entitling to free visa order crossing. You can acquire the necessary documents from tour operators, but you must apply for a border pass and insurance 2 3 days before the trip at the latest. The water border crossing in Rudawka (in operation from 1 May to 30 September) allows you to cross the border by water, walking or by bike. The visa free tourist movement to Belarus entitles to a five day stay in the Augustów Canal Park and in Grodno. A trip down the Augustów Canal on both sides of the border is a wonderful adventure. You can enjoy the moment in the scenic setting of the Augustów Forest and benefit from active leisure opportunities. Biking fans can extend their trip to Niemnowo sluice, the last in Belarus, renting bikes and going to Grodno which lies nearby. Many historic monuments and mementoes have survived in this border city, also concerning Polish history. Tourist services on both sides of the Augustów Canal make a trip along this unique trail easy and pleasurable. The Augustów Canal makes it possible to organise a kayaking trip to the Biebrza National Park. From Dębowo sluice you go down to the Biebrza River which is navigable to its outlet to the Narew River. The kayaking trail from Augustów through the Biebrza to the Narew is 84 km long. At the sluice in Dębowo, the last point on the Augustów Canal route, one can also start a hiking trip to the Red Swamp Reserve (Czerowne Bagno). ATTRACTIONS Museum of the Augustów Region ul. Water frenzy A thrill and rise of adrenaline over the water mirror this is what enthusiasts of active leisure will experience at the lakes and reservoirs in the Podlaskie Region. Modern water ski lifts and the opportunities to hire boats attract water frenzy enthusiasts to Augustów, Wasilków and Siemianówka. Somme are carried away by imagination to the extent that they create their own floating objects. With such water freaks in mind, the Poland Championship in Floating on Whatever You Like are organised annually in Augustów. This July event attracts visitors from all over the country. Let yourself be carried away by a fantastic water adventure on Siemianówka the largest water reservoir in the Podlaskie Region. The reservoir is 10 km long and up to 4 km wide, offering a lot of opportunities for water sports enthusiasts. A motor boat or jet ski can reach high speed thanks to its wide open space. Adventurers will not be disappointed taking an opportunity to rent a motor boat, a banana boat or water ski and to practice wake boarding and knee boarding. At the recreational centre in Stary Dwór by Siemianówka one can hire suitable equipment, not only motor boats and ski jets, but also kayaks, pedalos and fishing boats, and even a sailing boat for fourteen. Extreme Water equipment hire on Siemianówka also organises kayaking rallies down local rivers. The Bachmaty Reservoir is situated in the Dubicze Cerkiewne municipality, 15 km from Hajnówka. It has a holiday centre with a wide offer of accommodation and recreation facilities. Water frenzy Regional Sport and Recreation Centre (WOSiR) Szelment, photo WOSiR Szelmert archive Two bathing places and water equipment hire are available. Angling enthusiasts like to visit the site in the summer. In July the Kupała Night an event with folk music is organised on the shore. The Repczyce reservoir lies in the Hajnówka Poviat. A beach and a bathing place, a playground for children, a tent ground and a place for camp fire are available. Pet owners are offered special pens for their animals. You will also have fun in Augustów, Wasilków and Szelment, where water skiers can vent their energy using special ski lifts. Water ski, swimming and hoverboard fans meet by the Supraśl River reservoir, at WakePark in Wasilków. The water ski lift is fixed on two posts which makes impressive water acrobatic shows possible. Diving in Lake Hańcza is recommended if you want to explore the underwater world. You can admire the beautiful sandy bottom, original rock formations and surviving archaeological findings (dugout canoes) and, of course, fish, including such species as pike, European catfish, lake trout, whitefish and European catfish. In the northern part of the region there are many lakes suitable for sailing and water sports. In Suwałki you can also rest by a well arranged Arkadia reservoir, an artificial lake of 11 ha. You can hire a boat, a kayak or a pedalo. Tennis courts, a skate park, a fitness club, a playground and a café are available on the banks of the reservoir. If you look for entertainment and a play in the water, visit the water park in Suwałki. It offers a lot of attractions, including slides, an artificial river, geysers, a cascade, a water umbrella and a paddling pool for the youngest with a water mushroom and hedgehog. A salt grotto and a complex of saunas are also offered. Every year on the last weekend of July, fans of and contestants in the event If you are born to sail, you will never drawn, i.e. Poland Championship in Floating on Whatever You Like, draw to Lake Necko in Augustów. Whole families participate in the contest. Teams from various parts of Poland show their floating structures, looking like fairy tale characters, dinosaurs, huge cups, animals, castles and other wonders. The event is accompanied by concerts. The atmosphere of the summer capital of Poland ensures a great fun. ATTRACTIONS Aquapark in Suwałki ul. The lakeland Podlaskie s numerous lakes not only adorn the landscape. They also offer plenty of opportunities for active water leisure. In addition to ship or catamaran cruises, tourists can benefit from a unique offer to hire a round sailing boat, or even to take part in the World Round Boat regatta on Lake Pomorze. Local tourist facilities around the lakes include modern water equipment hire and leisure centres which offers accommodation even in the most unexpected places, such as round cottages in Poland s only Clay Village. Various boats such as wooden gondolas and the Jaćwież passenger ships in the style of a Yotvingian boat are tourist attractions of the Augustów Canal. Lake Necko, photo MOPR archive Modern tourist barges (houseboat type motor yachts) are among the most popular boats in Augustów. You can charter them for a cruise down the Rospuda valley or even a visa free trip to Grodno. Gondola trips prove a very good choice on Augustów lakes. The wooden, very stylish boats take tourists on trips along the Papal Trail to Studzieniczna and romantic Rospuda beauty spots. You can also go by kayak, canoe, fishing boat, motor boat or passenger ship of Żegluga Augustowska down the Augustów Canal. Passing through the sluices is the greatest attraction of the water route. There are 18 sluices on the Augustów Canal, including 14 on the Polish side of the border. The impressive Rajgród Water District, Lake Pomorze and Lake Wigry also adorn the landscape of the Podlaskie Region. You can give it a try to sailing by unique round boats at the Kukle centre at Lake Pomorze. World unique boats offer an unconventional adventure which is promoted by Alternative Sailing Association. Every year special round boat regattas are held on Lake Pomorze. Rajgród is another attractive place for sailing enthusiasts. The regattas For the Blue Ribbon of Lake Rajgród are held here in the summer. The Wigry National Park also offers cruises by motor boat with glazed bottom. Leptodora II starts at the platform by the Museum of Wigry. You can explore the wealth of nature of Lake Wigry and watch underwater life. Sailing enthusiasts also appreciate Wigry, particularly suitable for smaller sailing boat trips. The area surrounding the lake is peaceful and quiet, because the use of combustion engines is prohibited. Going by yacht or kayak along the banks of Wigry you can get to extraordinarily charming sites. Hermitages and isolated islets, peninsulas, narrows, spring outlets and deep bays are hidden here in a picturesque landscape setting. Only few sailors discover those hidden treasures, There are 19 islands of Lake Wigry, most of them swampy and overgrown with stunted trees. Only a few islands, e.g.: Kamień, Mysia, Ostrów and Ordów, have dry banks suitable for camping. The Wigry National Park installed six platforms to stop and moor your boat at Lake Wigry. A camp ground, a forester s lodge, a lakeside hostel and a museum are nearby. Down the rivers A wealth of nature in the Podlaskie rivers is best seen from a close perspective, e.g. when kayaking. You can also set off on a rafting trip down the Biebrza River. On the Narew River you will be surprised to see traditional boats known as pychówki. The Biebrza River is surrounded by vast swamp and peat bog areas, nesting birds and the king of this land the elk. The meandering Narew with its widely branched river bed and surrounding marshlands, is known as the Polish Amazon. The Bug River will take the visitor to the picturesque and culturally attractive southern part of the region. Kayaking down the Bug River M. Pomietło The ecosystem of the Biebrza River fascinates at every time of the day, but it is best to discover its wealth of nature in the morning or at dusk. If you choose rafting, you will have the opportunity to stay the night on the deck, and in the morning you will probably be waken up by a snipe or an aquatic warbler flying nearby. On the wet meadow you can hear the rustle of the running spotted crake and watch noisy gees flying over your head. The raft is comfortably furnished (there are a table, an observation terrace, a grill and a sleeping room on the deck), so your trip in the Biebrza valley can last as long as a few days. It is an excellent alternative to traditional accommodations in agritourist farms. The advantage of rafts is that you have a direct contact with nature, stay in the landscape untouched by human hand and listen to the sounds of the Biebrza wildlife. The charming sunrise and sunset over the river will also be unforgettable when watched on the raft. The Narew River the Polish Amazon enchants tourists by unique ways of travelling down the river. In addition to traditional kayaking, you can take a pychówka river boat with flat bottom, some 4 m long. In the olden times such boats served local residents for hay transport or fishing. Today they are special tourist attractions. Pushing off from the river bottom using a long row or a pole is not as easy as it seems, but going by boat is a great fun and a perfect leisure activity for many tourists. A pychówka trip along the Narew is an opportunity to explore the beautiful recesses of the Narew National Park and to watch various species of local fauna and flora at a close distance. Pychówka boats are operated by experienced rafters, who very skilfully move on the Narew River, meandering and overgrown with rich vegetation. Podlaskie rivers offer perfect opportunities for active leisure. Kayaking down the Supraśl or Czarna Hańcza is diversified because of water bank ups and places which are unfit for kayaking and so the kayak must be carried. Rowing by kayak along the rivers abounding with the wealth of nature offers the opportunity to get in touch with the historical architecture of the regions and historic sites. Many well known kayaking routes can be extended by the river tributaries, such as in the case of the Sokołda a tributary of the Supraśl or the Narewka a Narew tributary. The Bug definitely rules in the southern part of the Podlaskie Region. The landscapes, nature and charming small towns on the river banks attract tourists. The Down by 500 Kayaks has become a much awaited annual event. The Bug is wide enough to permit tourist ship cruises. Small paddle wheel driven ships set off for tourist trips along the Bug from Serpelice, Mielnik, Drohiczyn and other localities. The ships go slow, so you can peacefully relax on board and to enjoy the ravishing landscapes in surrounding areas. ATTRACTIONS Catamaran cruises down the Bug ul. Fishing a gold fish Fisheries situated on numerous lakes and rivers of the Podlaskie Region are great attractions for anglers visiting the region. The impressive Siemianowka water reservoir is a particular attraction for angling enthusiasts. The northern part of the region offers excellent fishing opportunities in Augustów lakes or at centres specially tailored to the needs of angling leisure, e.g. at Lake Boksze. Delicious freshwater fish dishes are also served in numerous regional restaurants. A pond in Turtul, photo J. Borejszo With a fishing rod The lakes abundant with fish and suitable tourist facilities offer the opportunities for fishing holidays in the Podlaskie Region. Keen anglers will find the Siemianówka reservoir to be a fishing Eldorado. The reservoir is a sanctuary for the crucian carp, tench and other fish species. The rich offer of accommodation invites you to choose angling leisure in this part of the region. The north of the region attracts visitors by the size of lakes and fishing areas suitable for anglers. Holiday houses around Lake Boksze are open all year round and are a refuge for those who want to fish pikeperch, perch and pike. The lakes also abound with bream, eel, roach and tench. The scenic landscapes of the Augustów Forest make the time of waiting for the fish to bite more pleasurable. Angling will certainly be also successful in Rajgród, where you can fish burbot, break and vendace, while at the same time watching birds, such as cormorants, grebes and swans, plenty of which can be seen in the area. Anglers also like to visit Lake Wigry. It has a very irregular shoreline and diversified bottom. The lake banks are overgrown with a narrow strip of thicket and dense rushes. Eel, vendace, perch, pike and European catfish live in Lake Wigry. The lake lies in the Wigry National Park, so the anglers must buy a license to fish there. Many agritourist farms operate around Wigry, some of them with direct access to the lake, with their own platforms and fishing boats. Lake Serwy near Augustów is a good place for angling. Anglers can expect to catch perch, roach, bream, vendace and pike here. The shoreline near Mołowiste is easily accessible and attracts anglers who are keen to fish from the bank. Lake Gaładuś lies on the Polish Lithuanian border which is marked with yellow buoys crossing the lake. The bottom of the lake has many hollows and underwater hills, so it is easy to catch a sizeable perch or pike. To catch the largest specimen, anglers select the central part of the lake near islets and on underwater bumps. The deepest place in the lake is a habitat of sizeable vendaces. Anglers also visit the lake in winter. Then you can catch here a powan or a perch. Fish dish While relaxing on the bank of a lake, tasting a freshly caught fish is a must. Following this motto, many regional restaurants specialise in serving delicious fish dishes. Dumplings with pike filling are well known Podlaskie delicacies. Smoked vendace and fried pike perch will be a pleasant surprise for you in Rajgród. Boiled, roasted or served with sauce fish dishes will also taste great at the very heart of the Wigry National Park at Stary Folwark, serving regional cuisine specialties and freshly caught whitefish, European catfish and other kinds of fish from local lakes. A visit to a harbour bar at the centre of Augustów is a very pleasant experience. The tables are installed on the platform overlooking water. Passing boats and gondolas create a unique scenic setting, in which delicious dishes taste even better. CATERING Bar Smakosz ul.
