creative Creative Arts arts Fifth Scone Short Film Festival Pen 14 September into your diary and be sure to save the date for a highly enjoyable and social evening of Australian fi lm entertainment. Dungog Film Festival might not have happened this year, but it s all go for Scone FilmFest 2013. Scone Films will present their fi fth short fi lm festival, on Saturday evening 14 September. Dress up in something glamorous, walk the red carpet and enjoy a fun and sociable evening at the movies with a genuine atmosphere. Roy Billing, a guest at the inaugural Scone FilmFest will be visiting again this year. Roy stars in one of the short fi lms being screened; the Underbelly star was most recently seen on TV in Jack Irish, Rake and Cliffy. Once again it s all Aussie at the fi lm festival. In previous years good crowds have gathered to enjoy the festive experience and appreciate the program of Australian only short fi lms. The audience met fi lm guests that included writer/ producer/director John Winter, actor Roy Billing, producer Drew Bailey, director Mark Shields, and producer Sam Wark. The evening has all the essential elements - great fi lms, festival buzz and an enthusiastic audience. I d say that our audience ranged from 9 to 90, and all were really engaged and applauding after every fi lm, said Catherine Boulton of Scone Films of the previous festival. We re promoting fi lm going as an entertainment option and fi lm culture in our area; showcasing the talents of independent Australian fi lmmakers. Collating a diverse evening s screen entertainment for all; some fun fi lms, some quirky, some more thoughtful and/or challenging, but nothing too way out. There is something for everyone. We want to make this a fun and social evening out, said Mrs Boulton. Delicious fi nger food and refreshments will be served before the fi lms, and coffee and slices afterwards. Before and after the fi lms our fi lm guests will be available for fi lmgoers to chat to about their fi lms. Scone FilmFest 2013 will be on Saturday evening 14 September at the Senior Citizen s Centre, Oxford Road, Scone. For further information contact 0428 508326. creative arts New Exhibition Coming Soon to Michael Reid Anne-France Fulgence 6 September 27 October Un monde de lumière. The man of today is abusing nature like there is no tomorrow. We are destroying so much and not giving anything back. I am horrifi ed to witness the speed of destruction. So much waste, from so much beauty. The ready to discard world we inhabit. I worry that we, humankind, have learnt nothing about preserving beauty or respecting the natural order. We have taken so much, destroyed even more. I believe in the force of the natural world. The Australian land that I paint from my studio is vivid, menacing and compelling and ever shifting. I watch the changing weather and changing seasons from within the mountains of Kangaroo Valley, where I live. I like to take photographs of those moments, then using digital programs, I exaggerate the light, and contrast. It is like painting poesy, dark poesy. I want the darkness to make the light look brilliant, and luminous. I do not sketch. I work rapidly in oil. But I am meticulous, and demanding. On my fi rst travel to Australia, I was reminded of the place I was born, Morocco. After my parents moved to France when I was very little, I had the luck to go back every summer holiday, camping in the deep south with my dad, a keen beach fi sherman. He used to disappear with his fellow Moroccans for days, leaving me alone in that beautiful wild land. I loved walking for hours along huge cliffs, while I could hear the roar of the Atlantic Ocean below. I loved sitting for hours and contemplating the changing weather. At that time I had no camera so I tried to imprint the view and feeling of the land into my memory. The Australian land is very similar to Morocco; there is an amazing light, even brighter here, and this enormous sky. I feel the power of the land. Every day spent in the studio reminds me of what humanity is doing to our Earth. I fi nd solace in solitude, within the enclosure of the studio, where I battle with paint, and celebrate any progress I make, in capturing an instant of beauty. un monde de lumière., Anne-France Fulgence 2013 The art gallery at Murrurundi strives to showcase the best in contemporary Australian and Aboriginal art. food & wine Tamworth Offers Boundless Attractions The Tamworth region is bursting with an abundance of local produce on offer from some of the fi nest livestock and cropping areas in rural Australia. As one of Australia s agricultural hubs, the Tamworth region has a strong focus on traditional farming such as beef, sheep, poultry, grains, dairy and pastures. Recently Tamworth has experienced a growth in the niche agricultural ventures such as olives, nuts, fi sh farming, honey, alpacas, hydroponics and delicious berries. Many local operators have now expanded to export produce, satisfying an international demand for all things Australian. The Tamworth region s abundance of top quality local produce does not stop in the paddock. A number of restaurants and businesses utilise the local products to create a wide range of tasty dishes. With an exponential amount of eateries to satisfy any hunger available throughout the region, amateur food critics will fi nd it hard to choose where to dine. You will be surprised by the blends of appetising local produce teamed with true-country style hospitality and a wide array of alfresco dining cafes and restaurants. Hot tip: Some of the numerous wineries to explore include Banalasta along the New England Highway, Kitty Crawford Estate in the majestic Dungowan Valley, the Lazy Poet Vineyard at Piallamore and Tangaratta Vineyards in the Tranquil Peel Valley. out & about Linga Longa Olympics Flagged a Fantastic Event! By Sophie Fitzgerald Earlier this month, the Linga Longa Olympics made an offi cial comeback at the well-known Linga Longa Inn at Gundy and was hailed a fantastic event; raising a huge $115,000 in aid of various charities and local organisations. With an impressive turnout out of participants and spectators, the crowds had an enjoyable time whether it was through the friendly rivalry of Olympics or battles for auction items. With funds raised going towards the Children s Cancer Institute of Australia, 4tracks4kids and the local public school; a huge result for such a small village like Gundy. It s a testament to all those people who were so generous with their time in organising the event and those who kindly donated all of the great items for the auction and the sponsors of various challenges, said Bo Ritson one of the organisers. Team, Minnamurra Magic came out winners for the day followed by the Linga Longa Lads coming second place and third going to the Patinack Boys. The unique and well-established event saw plenty go under the hammer thanks to the efforts of the Hunter breeding industry, local businesses and local community, who without the support of the event wouldn t have been able to go ahead and been so successful. Stewart and Jenny Barr of Lilivale Stud purchased 10% of the Snitzel fi lly that was kindly donated by Gerald Ryan while the one month worth of training fees that were donated by a number of leading trainers were well sort after and the Dane Shadow nomination was purchased by Richard McClenahan of Dartbrook Vets, explained Bo. A huge congratulations is expressed to the organisers for such a successful event; as well as endless thankyous to the many supporters and participants for being so generous in assisting such a great cause such as the Children s Cancer Institute of Australia. The community is no doubt waiting in anticipation for the next Linga Olympics, be sure to keep an eye out! Experience. Sound advice. Positive outcomes. We think that just about covers it! leisure & lifestyle Orange the Colour for Men The Neighbourhood Centre s manager Lee Watts said, I was thrilled to be made an honorary member of the Aberdeen Men s Shed. This is a great bunch of guys and I have really enjoyed assisting them in establishing their shed in Aberdeen. The group is growing quickly with eleven members and the biggest challenge will be fi nding a venue and shed; but I know the determination behind this group and I am sure they will have an announcement soon. The Men s Shed now has a uniform, and you will see them around in their orange shirts which are sponsored by All Day Concrete. The Scone Neighbourhood Centre has organised a series of computer classes. Trainer Karlene Duwakin is working with the members to give them the skills to be able to access information, email and update facebook - keeping the community up to date with activities and what s on. The Aberdeen Men s Shed meets every Wednesday 1.00pm at the Community Hall. All welcome. Images: Members of Aberdeen Men s Shed Vale Ann Raymond Well-known local matriarch of the thoroughbred breeding industry, Ann Raymond sadly passed away recently at the age of 88. Ann was greatly infl uenced by her father Guy Raymond who owned St Albans Stud at Geelong in Victoria and who also bred and raced 1948 Melbourne Cup winner Rimfi re. Her father s successes drove her to aspire to her own glory of owning, breeding and racing stock. This led to one of her main foundation breeding mares who although did not attain status as a winner of the cup itself, she did win the Hotham Handicap on the Saturday of the Melbourne Cup carnival with Sudani in 1970. After the death of her father and the approaching pressures of suburbia at their Geelong stud, they sold up and purchased Sledmere Stud at Scone. Ann had bred some very impressive performers who have won and placed in group and listed races such as Valance, Pane in the Glass and Gold Brose. Ann Raymond will be sadly missed in the thoroughbred industry and was a recipient of the Hunter Valley Breeders Award for Services to the Industry. leisure & lifestyle First Steps to Solve Homelessness Recently community leaders met in Scone to discuss how to help homeless people. Lee Watts, Manager of the Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre, who called the meeting, said the issue was not straight forward but a solution will be found to bring people in from the cold. I want to fi nd a place, so that people who are currently sleeping on the streets, can have a temporary roof over their head, said Lee Watts. Unfortunately, with all of the red tape nowadays that is not straight forward, but we are determined to fi nd a way, she said. There are other towns who have found a way to do it and our fi rst step is to talk to them and learn from them. The local charities and community services which came to the meeting are all keen to help. We talked about being able to provide some soup and there are generous people in our community who want to volunteer for things like this, she said. We will also collate information from all the local services to help people know what help is available for housing; we want to catch people before they end up on the streets, Ms Watts said. Aberdeen Big Boys Toys 2013 It will be all systems go when the 5th annual Big Boy s Toys event kicks off on Saturday 7 September at Jefferson Park in Aberdeen. Aberdeen Neighbourhood Centre event organiser Nic Ervine said, There are so many great activities that will interest all ages; a display by the Aberdeen Fire Brigade, helicopter fl ights and lots of rides for the kids. In 2012, seven hundred and fi fty people came through the gate for the event, and this year we are hoping to see an increase. For the fi rst time we have a young group performing, the Brothers3 who are winners of the Best Band 2011 and 2012 and People s Choice at the Country Music Awards. The 3rd annual Shannon s Show and Shine, proudly sponsored by Shannon s Insurance is a big part of the day with trophies for many categories including the Viewers Choice Car award. There is also a trophy for the Viewers Choice Motorcycle on the day, sponsored by Reliance Motorsport. Manager of Aberdeen Neighbourhood Centre Lee Watts said, We hope that everyone will take the opportunity to stop at the grounds and enjoy the displays of cars, motorbikes and trucks. We have a range of market stalls and great prizes to be won in our raffl e, tickets are on sale now from the Aberdeen Neighbourhood Centre. The event will run from 10.00am to 2.00pm with an entry fee of $5.00 adults, $2.50 children and $10 families. local gig guide Dragon to Headline Murrurundi Festival By Laura Sykes Furniture, Giftware, Soft Furnishings, Jewellery, Accessories, Clothing, Stockists for L Occitane products & Glasshouse Candles. www.serendipityscone.com.au When new music festival Music by the Pages comes to the White Hart in Murrurundi later this year, fans will be treated to sounds from a rock band that has become iconic - Dragon. Since forming in 1973, many fans will remember Dragon from one or more of their three ages the Young Years, the Glory Years and the Pheonix years. After originally playing out all venues in New Zealand, band members made the move to Bondi in 1975 and have never looked back. Playing hand to mouth for several months, Dragon got their big break when they were signed and recorded by CBS Records USA and have been wowing crowds and countdowns ever since. The group split up in 1978 and reformed again in 1982, marking the beginning of the Glory Years for the band. By 1998, Dragon s fame had fizzled and had been forgotten by many but the most hardcore fans. Then, in 2006, Dragon reformed for the second time and so far there are no signs of slowing down on the horizon. Dragon s list of members has changed several times over the band s lifespan, with current members including founding member Todd Hunter, legendary kiwi singer Mark Williams, Canadian guitarist Bruce Reid and Pete Drummond on the drums. Fans old and new are chomping at the bit for the opportunity to see the band play live at Music by the Pages, some for the first time and some taking a trip down memory lane from years back. Whichever category you fit into, if you re a lover of original rock music, this is one headline act you won t want to miss. Music by the Pages will be held at the White Hart Hotel Festival Grounds in Murrurundi on 19 October, 2013. Ticket prices are $99 inc. GST plus booking fee. Gates will open at 1pm.
