DRAFT ITINERARY DAY 1 WEDNESDAY 10 APRIL 2019 DEPART SYDNEY 3:00pm 6:05pm Meet at Sydney International Airport Travel: Depart Sydney-Singapore on Flight SQ242 DAY 2 THURSDAY 11 APRIL 2019 1ST OF 3 NIGHTS IN CARDIFF TRAVEL TO CARDIFF 12:20am 1:10am 7:45am Arrive Singapore Travel: Depart Singapore-London Heathrow on Flight SQ306 Arrive at London Heathrow. Clear customs and collect baggage. On arrival at London Heathrow, we travel by private coach to Cardiff in Wales and check into our centrally-located hotel. The evening is free to rest and relax after the long journey from Australia. DAY 3 FRIDAY 12 APRIL 2019 2ND OF 3 NIGHTS IN CARDIFF CARDIFF In the morning we have a guided tour of fascinating Cardiff Castle, one of the oldest castles in Wales, dating back to Roman times and reflecting the history of many periods since then. On a 3rd-century Roman fort, Norman invaders built a motte and bailey castle in the late 11th-century. Through time a medieval castle and a Victorian Gothic revival mansion were added. During World War II the Castle s tunnels were used as air raid shelters. The early afternoon is free. You might wish to rest after yesterday s long journey, or you might consider exploring Cardiff further. Proclaimed the capital of Wales in 1955, Cardiff is a port city on the Severn Estuary. Its waterfront has been revitalized and is an exciting and attractive place to visit. At Mermaid Quay there are shops, bars and restaurants, and if you feel like a walk you could visit the Wales Millennium Centre, home of the national opera, orchestra, theatre and dance companies, and stroll to the nearby Senedd, a strikingly modern building, which houses the Welsh National Assembly. In the afternoon we travel by private coach to Swansea. Together with the SYO we have an early dinner and then attend a concert by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at Brangwyn Hall. This is a concert venue named after artist Frank Brangwyn, whose magnificent panels, originally intended for the House of Lords, are exhibited here. Cardiff city and Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Castle. The Millennium Centre, Cardiff.

During the workshop the SYO players will have the unique opportunity of sitting side-by-side with members of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Following the workshop, the Family & Friends tour group enjoy a delicious lunch. The late afternoon is free. In the early evening we attend the SYO s first performance of the tour at BBC Hoddinott Hall. The concert is a joint concert with the Cardiff County & Vale of Glamorgan Youth Orchestra. The Hallé Orchestra, with its reputation for artistic excellence, ranks among the UK s top symphonic ensembles. It performs regularly at Bridgewater Hall, Manchester s prestigious international concert venue, situated in the heart of the city. In the evening we attend a performance by the Hallé Orchestra at Bridgewater Hall. Programme: Beethoven Overture: Leonora No.3 Mozart Piano Concerto No.17 in G, K453 Hallé orch. C. M. The historic city of Manchester. The Radisson Blu Edwardian, Manchester.

DAY 6 MONDAY 15 APRIL 2019 1ST OF 4 NIGHTS AT HAMPTON BY HILTON, LONDON WATERLOO MANCHESTER TO LONDON This morning there is some free time to explore the city of Manchester. You might consider a relaxed stroll in Castlefield Urban Heritage Park, with its casual waterfront bars, green spaces, beautiful views of canals and fascinating historical connections. It is the site of the Roman fort of Mancunium, which gave its name to Manchester. A section of the fort s wall, its gatehouse, granaries, and other ancillary buildings have been reconstructed and are open to the public. The park also has connections to the Industrial Revolution, such as being the terminus of the Bridgewater Canal, the world s first industrial canal, built in 1764 and being the site of the oldest canal warehouse, which was opened in 1779. There are other exciting places to visit in Manchester according to your particular interests, such as the National Football Museum, the Museum of Science and Industry, and the Lego Museum. In the early afternoon we travel by private coach to London. On arrival in London we check into Hampton by Hilton, conveniently situated just a 10-minute walk from London s Southbank. The evening is free to relax or to begin exploring London. DAY 7 TUESDAY 16 APRIL 2019 2ND OF 4 NIGHTS AT HAMPTON BY HILTON, LONDON WATERLOO LONDON This morning we attend the SYO s workshop with the London Symphony Orchestra. Following the workshop we enjoy lunch together with the SYO. In the afternoon we travel to the Wallace Collection which is displayed in the beautiful mansion of Hertford House. We take a guided tour of the art treasures in the collection with its unsurpassed displays of French 18th-century painting, furniture and porcelain and its superb Old Master paintings. The evening is free. DAY 8 WEDNESDAY 17 APRIL 2019 3RD OF 4 NIGHTS AT HAMPTON BY HILTON, LONDON WATERLOO LONDON Today the morning and afternoon are free to explore London. The city offers riches in museums, galleries, shopping and more, and you may have your own particular interests to pursue, but the following is a suggestion for an interesting walk: Start from the St Paul s Cathedral side of the Millennium Bridge, then enjoy the views of London as you cross the Thames. The Tate Modern and the reconstruction of Shakespeare s Globe are on the southern side of the bridge, to visit or just admire as you stroll by. Turn left and wander along the Thames Bank until you reach Borough Market, a great place to find a coffee, a meal and a fascinating and picturesque collection of market stalls all under cover. You can browse, visit Southwark Cathedral and then if you continue your walk along the Southbank, cross iconic Tower Bridge. You can then visit the Tower of London, or just take in the picturesque district before returning to your tube station and hotel. In the early evening we travel by private coach to the Barbican Centre, and enjoy dinner together with the SYO. A view across Westminster Bridge, London. The State Room at Hertford House. A painting in the Wallace Collection.

We then attend a performance by the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre. Programme: Tippet The Rose Lake Szymanowski Violin Concerto No 1 Debussy Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande (UK premiere) BBC Symphony Orchestra Sir Andrew Davis, conductor Lisa Batiashvili, violin Following the performance we return by private coach to our hotel. DAY 9 THURSDAY 18 APRIL 2019 4TH OF 4 NIGHTS AT HAMPTON BY HILTON, LONDON WATERLOO LONDON This morning is free for some final exploration of London. You might choose to shop, or simply to stroll and enjoy the atmosphere of this great city. However, you could consider visiting the Handel House Museum, an attractively restored historic house at 25 Brook Street in Mayfair. Here the great baroque composer, George Frederic Handel, lived from 1723 to 1759, composing works such as Messiah, Zadok the Priest and Music for the Royal Fireworks. A visit offers an insight into Handel s life, and into 18th-century music and culture. This afternoon we have the unique opportunity to sit in on a rehearsal in which the SYO play side-by-side with members of the Philharmonia Orchestra as they prepare for this evening s concert. The Philharmonia has an exciting and revolutionary approach to the role of the modern-day symphony orchestra, using learning and participation programs, and digital technology to engage new audiences. Through its flourishing international touring programme and global digital reach, the Philharmonia reaches a world-wide audience. It is a self-governing orchestra owned by its world-class players, who are also at the centre of its creativity. In the evening we attend a performance by the SYO and members of the Philharmonia Orchestra. DAY 10 FRIDAY 19 APRIL 2019 GOOD FRIDAY 1ST OF 2 NIGHTS AT HILTON CITY CENTRE, CAMBRIDGE LONDON TO CAMBRIDGE In the early afternoon we attend a performance by the Academy of Ancient Music at the Barbican Centre. The evening is free to explore Cambridge. You will find pubs on the picturesque banks of the Cam River where you can buy a meal and have a refreshing drink. It may interest you to visit The Eagle, a pub in the centre of the city. Its RAF bar has graffiti by World War II airmen covering the ceiling and walls. Also, it was here that Francis Crick, who worked at the university s Cavendish Laboratory, announced on the 28th of February 1953, during the lunch hour at the pub, that he and James Watson had discovered the secret of life with their proposal for the structure of DNA. A writers group, which included C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, met here from 1933 in a private lounge at the back of the pub and the members did readings from their works. It was at one of those meetings in June 1950 that C.S. Lewis distributed the proofs for The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Punting along the Backs, Cambridge. King s College, Cambridge. It is the University of Oxford s museum of art and archaeology with exhibits ranging from world famous collections of Egyptian mummies to works by great artists, including drawings by Michelangelo, Raphael and da Vinci, and paintings by such artists as van Dyck, Rubens, Cezanne, Picasso and Turner. You could also visit the Bodleian Library, the main research library of the University of Oxford and one of the oldest libraries in Europe.
